I was disappointed by this week’s Spider-Man for many reasons.

First was the story. I know this is part of an multipart storyline but I expected better. Most of the Spidey traditional moments were trotted out for this issue. Spidey is in bad shape, makes it home, is almost discovered, hears about the villain’s attack, picks himself up and goes to stop the villain. In a weakened condition Spidey is beat by the villain. The police capture Spidey and the villain’s identity is revealed to reader. Oh yeah, I forgot to include the anti-Spidey rant by J. Jonah Jameson.

This story has appeared numerous times. This is Marvel’s flagship title. I expect more creativity. On the good side, I was glad to see the hints that Harry was Menace did turn out to be a red herring. However, the villain’s identity might push him over the edge. Don’t be surprised if Harry becomes the Goblin again.

The artwork by Romita Jr and Janson looked excellent on the fight scenes (especially the two page spread of Spidey swinging up to Menace). However, some pages looked rushed. The art on the news report was very sparse. Harry also seemed to change appearances in some of the panels.

The Spider-Tracer Killer story did have one surprise. I will be watching to see how this is wrapped up.

An average issue. Readers who have not read many of the Spider-Man books will enjoy this one. Older readers will disappointed.

  1. Amazing Spiderman is hit or miss for me now. I read it maybe once a month, I really cant afford to pick it up 3 times a week, but I find in between your reviews and the web I get pretty caught up on what’s going on. I was disgusted by the Obama issue, i thought it was such a marketing ploy by Marvel to make more money on the book, is there nothing they wont try to squeeze out a few extra dollars?
