Top Comic Book Moments For May 2017

There were no shortage of big moments as Marvel and DC Comics delivered some memorable scenes involving their iconic characters. This included May kicking off with Captain America leading Hydra in its takeover of the Marvel Universe while the other heroes were forced to live in holes. On top of that we finally got the big meeting of father and son as the Batman of two worlds collided in the search for what the truth is behind the Watchmen button. That’s not even mentioning all the trouble the Gurdians of the Galaxy, Birds of Prey, Teen Titans, X-Men and more got into during the month of may.

All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy #1

Never expected Drax to try the monk-life but it has worked perfectly with all the antics the Guardians of the Galaxy get into thanks to Star-Lord’s leadership. At least Peter Quill has a straight man to bounce off of, rather than the even crazier Rocket Raccoon.

All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy #2

You can never say that the Guardians of the Galaxy aren’t willing to do everything in their power to succeed. Though this is probably the moment where the team starts rethinking their choices in life.

All-New Wolverine #14

How do you make a new character make a lasting impression on readers? Have her call out the smartest people in the Marvel Universe for not thinking about the obvious solution.

All-Star Batman #10

Putting a close to the sub-plot of Hush running around as Bruce Wayne was a long time coming. It felt like the well was dried with this sub-plot. Now writers will be able to do different things with Hush as he is given even more fuel to why he would torment Batman and his family.

Amazing Spider-Man #27

Silver Sable is certainly making up for lost time after being “dead” for a while. This speech to her people drove home why it was important for her to return at this point.

Archie #20

This car crash involving Archie, Reggie and Betty was an unexpected dark moment for the series to have. Even leading into this dark turn everything that preceded it, including the beginning of Archie and Reggie’s drag race, had the typical Archie light-hearted tone. Where things go from here and who went off the ledge creates intrigue into what happens next

Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey #10

Usually when your friends save you from being mind controlled by a supervillain you say “Thank You.” Guess Black Canary never heard of that before.

Batman #22

There are a lot of ways that Flashpoint Thomas Wayne’s words to Bruce before he and Flash left can be taken. It certainly seems to be setting the stage for something even bigger for Bruce as he begins to question how long he can continue on as Batman and how he should go about raising his family.

Batman #23

When you ask about moments in comics that you expect to have, Bruce Wayne sitting in his library drinking coffee with Swamp Thing is not one of those things. Still not sure if this was a dream or not.

Deathstroke #19

Click for full-page view

Deathstroke calling Flash (Wally West) out on not having any other skills past his speed abilities was one of the best moments for the character. It definitely got over how much of a badass he is as Flash did not call Deathstroke on his bluff, even if he is the more experienced Speed Force user.

The Flash #22

Just when it looked like Jay Garrick fans could rejoice over the character returning in the same way the classic Wally West did that hope vanished inside the Speed Force. This certainly raises the question as to where the rest of the original JSA members are.

Injustice 2 Chapter 6

Given their history Superman should know that Batman has a plan everywhere they are to take him down. Especially inside a prison cell.

Injustice 2 Chapter 8

Click for full-page view

It’s something that has been forgot in recent Batman comics which made the fact that Tom Taylor had Damian run the gauntlet to prove himself as a hero that can stand on his own before fully taking on the Robin role an even better sequence.

Invincible #136

There was no shortage of destruction and death in Invincible #136. This one page is just an example of that as all of Thragg’s kids just throw themselves at Invincible hoping to injure him with their numbers rather than strength.

Iron Fist #3

Since it’s launch, Iron First’s new ongoing series greatest strength is the action sequences. This single page featuring 27 comic book panels is just a show of how fun the unique fights Iron Fist has gotten himself into.

Justice League Of America #6

Killer Frost’s journey to redefine herself has been the strongest part of Justice League of America. This show of power is a good example of how her previous life still haunts Killer Frost in her journey to be a better person.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #15

Seeing the classic Power Rangers team-up with future allies and use Zords that they don’t even meet until way down the line was a big fanboy moment. It’s a clever way to show how intense this alternate world’s war against Rita and evil Green Ranger has gotten.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2017 Annual

A team-up between the multiverse versions of the Black Ranger is something I never thought we get. Though short it did create this crazy, cool visual of all the Black Rangers fighting together.

Nightwing #20

Click for full-page view

Nightwing and Robin’s big brother-little brother relationship has been one of the best things in the Batman Universe for a long time now. And that is saying something given all the great things that have happened in the books over the last few years.

Old Man Logan #23

Nothing like striking out to Cyclops to get Wolverine hot at all the X-Men during a baseball game at Xavier’s Mansion.

Old Man Logan #24

Click for full-page view

With how much Old Man Logan’s journey has been about returning to his world this was a much needed moment to show that this version of Wolverine is here for the long haul.

Secret Empire #1

Click for full-page view

Probably the best summary of who the current Captain America is as he lets the Hydra Avengers do his dirty work while he just turns his back and walks away.

Secret Empire #2

Click for full-page view

At least someone is willing to call Captain America on his bullshit of how he keeps his hands “clean” while his reign causes massive death and destruction.

Secret Empire #3

Click for full-page view

As controversial as Secret Empire has been and will continue to be at least we have some breathtaking artwork from Andrea Sorrentino to enjoy. This just makes me want a Marvel cosmic title like Captain Marvel or Nova with Andrea Sorrentino drawing it.

Spider-Gwen #19

Click for full-page view

Can’t a superhero in the Marvel Universe enjoy some New York City street food? And you wonder why people don’t trust the media anymore.

Spider-Gwen #20

Click for full-page view

No better way to test the limits of your spider-sense then having to constantly dodge slashes from Wolverine’s claws.

Super Sons #4

Click for full-page view

No matter how powerful or smart Robin and Superboy are there is no way they can escape the wrath of Lois Lane’s wrath.

Superman #22

Click for full-page view

Can we get a solo series of Lois Lane just riding around the DC Universe in one of Batman’s Batmobiles? She would kick so much as and put the Batmobile to much better use than Batman has.

Superman #23

Click for full-page view

Manchester Black is the last character I expect to see return to the DC Universe. But hey, DC Rebirth is a new era and Manchester Black’s return just fortifies the direction the Superman comics are going with their unpredictable nature.

Teen Titans #8

Click for full-page view

It’s good to see some elements from the Young Justice cartoon being brought into the DCU as Tempest and Jackson Hyde begin to form their friendship. At the same time, Starfire and Donna Troy having their own moment together does a good job reminding us how they were BFF’s back during Wolfman and Perez’s run on Teen Titans.

Teen Titans Annual: The Lazarus Contract #1

Click for full-page view

Even with after finally returning to the DC Universe, Wally West continues to not have any luck in catching a break. This is yet another thing that seems to be dragging Wally down.

Wonder Woman: Rebirth Annual #1

Click for full-page view

Batman probably even has business cards that just say “Batman” rather than “Bruce Wayne” in the place where his name should be.

X-Men: Blue #4

Click for full-page view

Would love to see an ice monster version of Iceman fight Juggernaut. It would definitely be an epic encounter, something Iceman has never been involved in on his own.

X-Men: Gold #3

Click for full-page view

After everything that they’ve been through the X-Men are sure not messing around with those that they don’t like. This is an interesting move given the dark nature of this clashes with the superhero route Kitty Pryde wants to take the X-Men.
