Weekly Awards for Comic Books From January 30, 2008

Let’s not waste any time and go ahead and hand out The Revolution’s weekly awards.

The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Captain America #34

Green Lantern #27

Project Super Powers #0

Ultimate Spider-Man #118

The Winner: Project Super Powers #0

There were plenty of excellent reads this week. This was a tough decision to make. Green Lantern #27 was a great read. I liked the new Alpha-Lanterns and am extremely excited about the direction of this title.

Ultimate Spider-Man #118 was just pure fun. Yeah, there was no action. But, this issue gave us Bendis at his best. We get a wonderful look into a group of young metahumans hanging out and just being teenagers and enjoying life. I wish Bendis would stick to titles like Ultimate Spider-Man that showcase his strengths rather than wasting time on titles like the Avengers that just make him look bad.

Now, after reading Captain America #34, I was sure that this issue was going to win the Che for best read of the week. I loved the debut of Bucky as the new Captain America. Brubaker handled the passing of the shield superbly. The ending was phenomenal and this issue simply reinforced my beliefs that this is one of the best titles on the market from either Marvel or DC.

But, then I read Super Powers #0 and just like Eli Manning engineering a last second win in the Super Bowl, Ross and Krueger managed a last second win against Brubaker. I know that many people would select Captain America #34, but the fact is Project Super Powers #0 was simply the best issue that I read this week. Captain America may be one of the best titles, but for this one week, Captain America wasn’t the best read.

Dynamite Entertainment has a real gem on their hands with this title and Project Super Powers has the potential to be a truly special story. I know that I already urged you to give this title a try in my review, but I simply cannot stress enough how much this title is truly worth your hard earned money.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Mighty Avengers #8

New Avengers Annual #2

Trials of Shazam #11

The Winner: New Avengers Annual #2

I’m shocked. For the second straight week, Countdown to Final Crisis wasn’t nominated for the Sequential Methadone Award this week. I know that Dan Didio must be nearly suicidal over this turn of events.

Trials of Shazam #11 was another unimpressive read. Winick’s re-imagining of the Captain Marvel universe has been a massive disappointment. Honestly, I’m already open to having DC hit the reset button with the Captain Marvel mythos based on the load of maggot infested refuse that Winick has given us with this title.

Mighty Avengers #8 was an average read that was made so much worse due to the shipping problems that have plagued this young title. Therefore, I have to go with New Avengers Annual #2 as the winner of the Sequential Methadone Award. This issue was an absolutely wretched read in every possible sense. Character work was abysmal. The dialogue was cringe inducing. The pacing and plotting was poor. New Avengers Annual #2 was definitely a waste of money.

So congrats to Project Super Powers #0 for winning the Che for the week and congrats to New Avengers Annual #2 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award of the week.
