This was a title I enjoyed when it debuted with Mike Barr and Jim Aparo. The later incarnations have floundered. Especially the latest. Creative teams were announced, changed, direction changed constantly, and now we are seeing the latest reboot. This time it is being directed by one of DC’s brightest stars-Peter Tomasi. Anyone who has been following The Revolution know that we are big Tomasi fans. Getting Nightwing and this special in the same week was a treat.

Batman and the Outsiders is really Alfred and the Outsiders. Tomasi has proven that he knows how to write Alfred in the Nightwing series. Some of the early scenes in this book will bring a tear to your eye.

Bruce has a failsafe in place that Alfred did not know about. He is given the mission of reassembling the Outsiders(now consisting of Geoforce, Katana, Halo, Metamorpho, Black Lightning, the Creeper, and Owlman). Owlman appears to be the Batman surrogate.

As always, Tomasi nails the characterization. I like his take on all of the characters. The art by Adam Kubert is perfect for the special. I will be curious how the regular art team of Lee Garbet and Trevor Scott will do.

Recommended. Get on board now for the start of a great new series.
