Hal’s current status quo has placed him in a space prison by the Green Lantern Corps after all his crimes while an ally to the Superman Regime. Hal’s stay in prison alongside Sinestro did not last long as the Red Lantern Corps have made their presence known by destroying the entire facility. The attack led Hal to become a Red Lantern Corps member in order to save his former Green Lantern allies. Now with that taking place will Hal become a permanent member of the Red Lantern Corps? And what is the Red Lantern Corps endgame? Let’s see if we find out with Chapter 56 of Injustice 2.

Elsewhere Hal tries to overpower all the Red Lanterns but their numbers allow them to keep him captured with restraints. Atrocitus mentions he has heard about all the destruction Hal has caused throughout the universe. Atrocitus asks Hal if he will officially join the Red Lantern Corps. Hal agrees to join the Red Lantern Corps.

Bleez says she wants to go after the Green Lantern Corps and Guardians right away so she can kill Sinestro. Atrocitus says they can’t attack right away as the Guardians are too powerful. Atrocitus then mentions knowing a way to tear the Green Lanterns and Guardians apart.

Over at the Fortress of Solitude Martha Kent finds Conner Kent looking at his chest. Conner admits that he is worried that he has the heart of an evil person inside him. Martha tells Conner not to worry because he is a good person and his organs aren’t what make him who he is. Conner thanks Martha for the kind words, even if they were a bit corny.

Conner then goes to meet up with Wonder Girl. Wonder Girl mentions talking to Starfire recently and they agreed the world needs the Titans more than ever. She goes on to say that they need to go on a recruiting drive.

Somewhere in space Atrocitus leads the Red Lantern Corps to an unknown location. He places a Red Lantern ring down on the ground. The Red Lantern ring powers up to reveal that Atrocitus has made Starro a member of the Red Lantern Corps. End of issue.

The Good: Chapter 56 of Injustice 2 is a pure set up issue. That is not at all a bad thing as we get to see how the Red Lantern Corps of the Injustice Universe act and what there motivation is at the moment. Getting more information on the villainous Lantern Corps painted more of a full picture as to what the coming conflict will be about. In addition to that, Taylor made sure to balance things out a bit by showing how Conner Kent is dealing with his own status quo within the Injustice Universe.

The Red Lantern Corps were the stars of the show for Injustice 2 Chapter 56. Tom Taylor spent a lot of time showing us how much they throw off everything the Green Lantern Corps try to establish by easily destroying the prison planet. On top of that destruction Taylor is able to give some added character depth to key members of the Red Lantern Corps to make the reader care about where they will go. That is at least the case with Atrocitus and Bleez whose character motivation both come from a place that you can understand as a reader.

At the same time, while they have clear motivations for what they are doing Taylor never tries to confuse the reader as to if the Red Lantern Corps are villains. Atrocitus and the Red Lantern Corps way of doing things show that their methods will only lead to more death and destruction. Adding Starro to their ranks only added to their impressive power and makes the Red Lantern Corps an even more terrifying threat for the Injustice Universe’s heroes to deal with. How Atrocitus plans to destroy the Green Lantern Corps and Guardians will be interesting since Starro can be used in multiple ways to create different storylines.

Additionally, it was interesting to see Hal Jordan accept the offer to become a Red Lantern Corps members. This is clearly something that won’t be permanent as Hal made the decision because it was the only way he could stay alive. Seeing as he does have more natural control of the Red Lantern ring it’ll be interesting to see how Taylor will continue to deal with Hal’s internal guilt. Having the manifestation of Guy to act as his own version of Jimmy Cricket adds to Hal’s decision being something he had to do to possibly have a bigger hero moment down the line.

While they weren’t a big part of the issue, it was good to see Taylor spend some time further developing Conner Kent as the new Superman. Conner questioning himself is understandable as having the heart of General Zod is not an easy thing to accept. Adding the fact that the ‘S’ shield hasn’t represented anything positive within the Injustice Universe for years Conner’s doubt is given more weight.

This made Martha Kent stepping in to remind Conner how good a person he is an even stronger scene for both characters. Martha showing that she is still hurt by her son’s decision is still weighing heavily on her. At the same time, that is not something that she is allowing herself to be consumed by. Instead she uses what Superman did as a way to explain to Conner how he can be his own person no matter what he may think certain things would otherwise dictate.

Conner and Martha’s scene made Wonder Girl bringing up how she and Starfire want to revive the Titans an even more intriguing idea. There are a lot of classic members that Taylor can bring back to become part of the new Titans team. It also provides Conner an opportunity to bring back the inspirational part of the Superman shield that has been missing from the universe.

Daniel Sampere continues to provide some great artwork to enhance Taylor’s ongoing Injustice 2 story. Sampere’s artwork captures the classic design of every character we see in Injustice 2 Chapter 56. And with this chapter being more character driven Sampere is able to deliver some strong facial reactions. Everything from Hal trying to maintain control of the Red Lantern ring to Conner’s self-doubt was enhanced thanks to how Sampere drew each character.

The Bad: Nothing.

Overall: Injustice 2 Chapter 56 is a strong character driven comic that gives added depth to the Red Lantern Corps. The plan that Atrocitus comes up with and how that involves Hal Jordan and another big time DC villain makes things a lot more interesting with what is going on in the Injustice Universe. The additional character development for Conner Kent’s personal arc added to why Tom Taylor’s Injustice 2 comic continues to be a must read for fans of the DC Universe.
