All right, it appears that we have a remarkably small shipment of comic books headed to the Bunker today. 8 titles total with 5 from DC and 3 from Marvel. This is the size shipment that I love to get, especially after swamped with 17 titles last week. I need a week to catch my breath.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Justice League of America #15 should be a fantastic read. McDuffie isn’t doing anything fancy or special on his debut story arc. Instead, he is just treating the reader to an old school good guy versus bad guy slobberknocker that is pure fun. This title is popcorn for the brain and I cannot wait to read this issue.

However, I’m going to have to go with Justice Society of America #11. It edges out JLA #15 because JSA has been just as much fun to read, but offers the extra goodness of being a deeper and more complex story that enables it to not only entertain the reader, but also engages the reader’s mind as well. This Kingdom Come story arc has the potential to be an incredibly exciting read. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Jay and Wally using the cosmic treadmill to travel to alternate Earths. It has been a long time since we have seen a Flash travelling between alternate Earths.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Countdown to Final Crisis #21. This title has crashed and burned over the past month and is quickly becoming unreadable. I have abandoned all hope for this title and am quickly abandoning all hope for the upcoming Final Slaughter-fest, I mean Crisis.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? I am rather curious about Ultimates 3 #1. I was an unabashed fan of Millar and Hitch’s Ultimates. I thought it was simply one of the best Marvel titles on the market. However, now Jeph Loeb takes over control of the Ultimates and that gives me cause for concern. Especially considering how truly horrendous Loeb’s run on Wolverine was. I know that Loeb will probably give us a version of the Ultimates that is much less political and adult than it was under Millar.

The Marvel comic book that I’m most looking forward to reading has to be Uncanny X-Men #493. The Messiah Complex story arc just keeps getting better and better with each issue. I’m thrilled that Marvel hit a home run on this event. After massive whiffs with House of M, Civil War and World War Hulk, I was beginning to think that Marvel just couldn’t put together a quality big event. Well, they certainly have done so with Messiah Complex.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? Wow, for a second week straight, I’d have to say none. Of course, with only three issues headed my way from the House of Ideas, it isn’t like I have a large selection to choose from.

I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week.

  1. I’ll be getting JLA, JSA, Ms. Marvel, and Uncanny X-Men. A small week, but, then I’ve got exams, so that’s fortuitous.

Grant Morrison has said you don’t have to read Countdown to enjoy Final Crisis.

  2. My opinion is that as long as Marvel keeps their big events localized to maybe one of their staples (Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc.) then they’re good. When they try to incorporate their entire universe into it, that’s when it gets all messy.

One of the few advantages DC has over Marvel is that they’re big fans of team-ups, and have a lot of experience incorporating a lot of different characters without being all over the place.
