The E3 Expo is in full swing in Los Angeles. And I will admit that right now the news from the E3 Expo is totally dominating my attention that is normally spent focused on the world of comic books. We have gotten tons of cool news from the E3 Expo from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft concerning their respective gaming systems. I own all three consoles so I found just about all the news to be interesting. However, there were a few that really caught my eye.
In the wake of the Nintendo Wii kicking ass on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 in terms of worldwide sales, both Microsoft and Sony are in a mad scramble to come up with their own motion sensor devices for their gaming systems.
Sony unveiled their new motion controller for the PS3. It is basically a silly looking version of the Wiimote. Nothing particularly new or revolutionary with this controller. Still, I am interested to see what Sony has in mind with their version of the Wiimote.
Meanwhile, Microsoft unveiled the new Project Natal which is their motion controller for the X-Box 360. It is basically a box that sits under, on or next to your TV. The player stands in front of the box. The box has a bunch of sensors that allows the box to let the player’s character in the video game mimic the full body motions of the player. There is no controller to hold in your hand like with the Wii and now the PS3. Project Natal is certainly an interesting concept. I am curious to see how smoothly this device works and if there are going to be any annoying glitches.
Nintendo fired back at both Sony and Microsoft by unveiling the Wii Motion Plus which is a plug-in adaptor that makes the Wiimote quicker and more accurately reflect motions in a 3-D space. This was a much needed upgrade and I will surely be getting several of these for my Wiimotes.
Sony also unveiled the new PSP Go. It is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the regular PSP. The PSP Go has built in Wi-Fi, integrated Bluetooth, a slide screen and no UMD drive. Games will load via a memory stick or downloaded over PlayStation Network. It is going to sell for $250. The PSP Go is definitely an improvement over the PSP; but this is not enough to get me to ditch my Nintendo DS Lite for one of these.
Nintendo then revealed three new games that caught my attention. Nintendo unveiled the Wii Sports Resort game. I loved Wii Sports and I hope that this sequel is as fun and entertaining as the original. Nintendo also trotted out a trailer to Metroid: The Other M. It certainly looks flashy. I have always loved the Metroid franchise so I am down with a new take on this franchise.
However, the news that got me the most excited out of E3 was the unveiling of the new Super Mario Bros for the Wii. This game is going to be 2-D and will enable up to 4 players. I think I am in video game heaven with the news of this game.
All right, let’s talk comic books. This is another standard sized week for The Revolution. We are getting 16 titles headed to the Bunker today. This week is slightly heavier with Marvel titles than DC titles.
Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? This is a no-brainer for me. It has to be Batman and Robin #1. Morrison and Quitely are a comic book team that is always tacos in the bank. DC’s mucking with the Batman family has caused me to drop Batman and Detective Comics. And I am relatively bored with the concept of Dick as Batman and I am already anxious for Bruce’s inevitable return. Still, Batman and Robin should be one wild ride. Morrison is an unpredictable fellow and I am curious to see what he has in store for us with this title.
Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Superman: World of New Krypton #4. This title continues to be a pedestrian read. My only hope is that the appearance of the Green Lantern Corps finally injects some excitement into this title.
Which Marvel comic book am I looking forward to reading? I am excited to read Agents of Atlas #6. This title continues to impress me. Agents of Atlas is an odd and offbeat title which makes it an interesting read.
I am also looking forward to reading Dark Avengers #5. It continues to amaze me how I hate Bendis’ New Avengers so much, but find Bendis’ work on Dark Avengers to be so interesting.
However, the Marvel comic book that I am most looking forward to reading is War of Kings #4. DnA are hitting on all cylinders with this big event. This issue should have plenty of action and several surprise twists and turns.
Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? This is an easy one. Ultimatum #4. This title has been a hideous mess. Ultimatum serves as the perfect blueprint of what not to do with a big event.
