2020 being another year of relaunches for Marvel does not stop at those comics within the Marvel Universe. They also will be happening for Marvel’s Star Wars comic. During New York Comic Con 2019 Marvel announced that new Star Wars ongoing series will be starting up in early 2020. What makes this Star Wars comic different from the past is that rather than following up on the current series that is about to end it will instead take place after the events of Empire Strikes Back. The new series will be written by former Daredevil writer Charles Soule and Powers of X artist R.B. Silva.

This relaunch of the Star Wars comics is something that was needed. Since launching new Star Wars comics in 2014 there have been a lot of great comics produced. The quality of Marvel’s Star Wars comics has been consistently high. The problem was that the current comics have honestly done all they could in exploring the period between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.

It is time for a fresh start by exploring the period between the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. That period is so rich with possibilities as there was a bit of a reset with all the characters that happened due to where Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and others found themselves in.

From the preview pages that Star Wars and Marvel released it looks like we will be starting at the moment Darth Vader cuts off Luke’s hand and reveals he is his father. This is a great starting point that will emphasize the direction Luke will go on in this new Star Wars comic. While various comics and books have explored Luke’s training it will be good to get a new modern take on it. There is definitely a lot of potential is seeing how Luke Skywalker becomes the Jedi Knight that can actually fight Darth Vader on an even playing field.

Charles Soule being selected as the new writer is a great choice. Soule has shown he knows how to tell a story that examines the psyche of a character during his Daredevil run. With the events of the Empire Strikes Back positioning Luke and Leia in places where they must think about their place in the universe even more it plays into Soule’s strength. These new Star Wars comic can go into what Luke and Leia do together and separately to get them where we find them when Return of the Jedi begins. Silva on as the artist after his work on the X-Men comics will further elevate his profile as one of Marvel’s top tier artists as well.

There is still a lot to be announced when it comes to Marvel’s Star Wars comics. This period in the Star Wars timeline is rich with possibilities. It wouldn’t be surprising to hear a Boba Fett series announced soon to coincide with the Mandalorian show premiering on Disney+.
