Top Comic Book Moments For January 2020

2020 kicked off with a bang as there were plenty of things to talk about in the world of comic books in January alone. From Scott Snyder ending his Justice League run to Wonder Woman celebrating a major milestone to some big Marvel/DC Comics crossover teases, it was tough choosing one moment that stood out in each of the comics I read in January 2020. But after making a lot of tough choices I’ve selected what most stood out in the comic books from Marvel, DC Comics and more this month.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #37

More clues for who really is Kindred pointing towards a version of Harry Osborn. Given how much Spider-Man has delved into the Multiverse thanks to the Spider-Verse it would not be surprising if Kindred was the Harry Osborn that died in the pre-Brand New Day continuity.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #38

J. Jonah Jameson saving Spider-Man is not a visual you expect to see in a Spider-Man comic book. But hey times change everything, including the relationship of Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson.

BATMAN #87

The silence when Lucius Fox reminds Batman that Alfred is gone speaks volumes to how much that death is still affecting Bruce.

BATMAN #88

It is rare to see Batman and Deathstroke go back and forth with each other. This scene shows that they have a lot of chemistry as adversaries that you hope builds to a bigger story between them in the future.

DAREDEVIL #16

You best not forget that Daredevil is one of the best fighters in the Marvel Universe. This is just another example of that. And this is with Daredevil still not at 100% as he is still dealing with the aftermath of his near-death experience.

DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #3

Stories like this about Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth’s past together was nice to finally get. It something that I was hoping we see explore more for not only Bruce but the entire Batman Family given how important Alfred’s been to everyone’s life.

GHOST-SPIDER #6

Always make sure you invite Ghost-Spider to a party or else risk getting webbed up to a wall. That’s a life lesson.

GO GO POWER RANGERS #27

Being a Power Ranger isn’t about being friends but about being a family. Trini and Zack remind Jason of this as they join him on the journey to become the Omega Rangers.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1

Nova Richard Rider’s statement here feels like a shot at the entire Marvel Universe with no one believing the warnings that always lead into a big event.

JESSICA JONES: BLIND SPOT #1

This is just a great way to show you how Jessica Jones analyzes a situation and people. This is the best type of character work to get over Jessica Jones detective skills being as dangerous, if not more, than her super strength.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #39

With this Scott Snyder ends his run on Justice League with the Legion of Doom winning. It is odd that we finally got to this moment in Justice League after it happened in every DC Comics comic book months ago. It feels like the rest of the DC Universe has moved on from this and never used the ramifications of the Doom signal to its maximum.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #18

Being able to convince a powerful dragon to join your fight solidifies you as a badass. Now Circe has control of a dragon on top of controlling Wonder Woman’s body.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19

This page showing how Doctor Fate and Wonder Woman team-up to save the day is absolutely fantastic. Another example of how great of an artist Alvaro Martinez Bueno is.

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #3

Saturn Girl re-writing Robin’s mind brings back a lot of memories of what made the Justice League fall apart. Brian Bendis needs to be careful not to make the Legion of Super-Heroes come across more as villains. With things like this Bendis is walking a fine line very early on in his version of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #47

Zordon showing why he is the ultimate Power Rangers mentor. With just a few words of encouragement Zordon is able to calm Trini and Zack down after Jason was seriously injured by Kiya, who they thought was a friend and ally.

NIGHTWING #68

All the memories that remind you why Dick Grayson is such a beloved character and why Ric Grayson is just a husk walking around trying to act as though he is the real version. We all know the truth. The time for Dick Grayson’s return must be now!

STAR WARS #1

Obi-Wan Kenobi not being there for Luke Skywalker when fighting Darth Vader was not something that was fully tackled by Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. Luke showing rage over his mentor not being here for a time when he feels most lost is a great character moment to build an entire series around.

STAR WARS #2

Lando Calrissian knows exactly what to say to get out of any situation. He is the ultimate opportunist in Star Wars, which is one reason he is so beloved.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #101

Losing a mentor is one thing but losing your father is a whole other thing. We are seeing how losing Master Splinter is impacting every single Ninja Turtle. Leonardo stepping back and raising plants in a greenhouse is just one example of how much each of the Ninja Turtles are hurting right now. Will make their return as a family and team later have greater impact.

THOR #1

The Marvel Universe better watch out because Thor has tapped into his Super Saiyan God power by becoming Galactus’ new Herald of Thunder.

THOR #2

We’ve seen various examples of DC Comics and Marvel teasing a new possible crossover between the two in the last few years. Most recently we saw a tease of this possible crossover at the end of Doomsday Clock with Geoff Johns teasing a Secret Crisis. Now we see in Thor #2 Donny Cates and Nic Klein give the Justice League a cameo appearance about some sort of Crisis-level event.

THE WEB OF BLACK WIDOW #5

Sometimes the best moments are the subtle, quiet ones. This is one of those moments as Natasha Romanoff thanks Tony Stark for helping her, a payoff to how hard it is for Black Widow to thank others because she is constantly moving to the next thing.

WONDER WOMAN #750

Wonder Woman #750 had a lot of great moments in each story that were all a great celebration for Diana Prince. This was by far my favorite as it shows how much not only Wonder Woman means to our next generation but also how Diana loves and appreciates people.

X-FACTOR #5

X-Factor 5 Wolverine Is Deadly

No matter how badly you beat him never, ever, take your eyes off Wolverine during a fight. Because half of Wolverine is still deadlier than most armies. Just a heads up.

X-FACTOR #6

X-Factor 6 Jean Grey Badass

Phoenix Force or no Phoenix Force, Jean Grey is one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe. Don’t ever forget that.

X-MEN #4

X-Men 4 Xavier Reveals Motives To World Government

With how much we’ve learned about the X-Men’s direction post-House of X and -Powers of X you will be excused if you forgot about how Charles Xavier’s original dream was about humans and mutants living together in harmony. Xavier taking off his Cerebro helmet and reminded everyone that dream still exists is an effective way to get his point across.

X-MEN #5

X-Men 5 X-23 Is Wolverine
Click for full-page view

As a fan of All-New Wolverine I loved how Laura Kinney was able to take the identity that Logan made iconic and took it on as her own. Logan supporting Laura when she tells Cyclops that she is Wolverine was a great use of how Laura has evolved past being X-23, a Wolverine clone.
