Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From March 4, 2009

All right, let’s go ahead and dish out The Revolution’s weekly awards.

The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Agents of Atlas #2
Daredevil #116
Jersey Gods #2
War of Kings #1

The Winner: Daredevil #116

Jersey Gods #2
Writer: Glen Brunswick
Art: Dan McDaid

Art Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10
Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10
Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10

Jersey Gods #2 was another great read. Brunswick has gotten me completely hooked on this new title. What I am enjoying about Jersey Gods is that it has an indie feel to it with the style of dialogue and artwork, yet it is also a good super hero title. And I always like to find an indie title that has a positive view of the super hero genre rather than the usual tired and worn out hate and venom for super heroes.

Jersey Gods #2 is a well paced read. Brunswick keeps the story rolling and offers a good mix of dialogue heavy scenes with good action packed scenes. The only scene that I found boring was the quick scene with Zoe at Bryant Park for a fashion show.

When Brunswick focuses solely on Zoe, I find that the story drags. However, when the gods from Neboron are involved the story is quite entertaining. Having said that, I am enjoying the budding romance between Zoe and Barock. They are such an odd couple and should provide for some entertaining stories.

Brunswick continues to impress me with crafting some dialogue that has some snappy and witty banter without going overboard with it like other writers tend to do. The character work on Jersey Gods continues to be well done as Brunswick continues to flesh out the various characters and give them their own distinct personalities.

The artwork is a bit too rough for my taste, but I love how McDaid is able to channel his inner Jack Kirby without losing his own style and simply being imitative.

I highly recommend giving Jersey Gods a chance. This title is very balanced with equal parts humor, drama, action and intrigue. This is a super hero title that has a fun and off-beat style to it that is sure to appeal to a wide range of readers. Go to your local comic book shop today and see if they have this title in stock. I do know that Jersey Gods #1 sold well enough that it is now getting a second printing.

The Revolution already posted reviews for Agents of Atlas #2 and War of Kings #1. They were both great reads. However, I had to give the Che for the best read of the week to Daredevil #116. I simply fell in love with Daredevil #116. This issue spoke to me in ways that the other issues from this week did not.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Trinity #40

The Winner: Trinity #40

Honestly, it was a really strong selection of comic books that we got last Wednesday. None of the titles screamed out for the Sequential Methadone Award this week. I went ahead and gave it Trinity #40 because it was by far and away the weakest link out of the titles that we got last Wednesday.

So congrats to Daredevil #116 for winning The Che Award of the week and “congrats” to Trinity #40 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.

  1. Thanks for another blistering review, Rokk. I gotta agree with you on how rough this ish looks – there’s some pages I’m proud of, other pages I’d rather not see again – but things gets real tight with the next ish. Look out for it!
