Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From April 9, 2008

Let’s go ahead and dish out The Revolution’s weekly awards.

The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Booster Gold #8
Justice Society of America #14
Fantastic Four #556
Nova #12

The Winner: Justice Society of America #14

We got treated to several gems this week. I continue to thoroughly enjoy what Katz and Johns are delivering each month on Booster Gold. Booster Gold #8 was certainly no exception. If you have not been reading Booster Gold then you should really buy the trade paperback whenever it is released.

Fantastic Four #556 was another fine read served up by Millar. The intensity of this story arc is cranked up several notches and the reader gets treated to plenty of action.

Nova #12 was a great read. This title has been such a pleasant surprise. Nova #12 is a fast paced issue that offers up plenty of action but still has a strong plot and well crafted dialogue. Again, this is another title that if you have not been reading it then I would recommend you checking out the trade paperback whenever it is published. Nova will certainly appeal to science fiction fans.

I have not been the biggest fan of Abnett and Lanning ever since they completely disregarded the Legion’s continuity and proceeded to pile drive the title into the ground and get it cancelled and completely rebooted for a second time. Having said that, their work on Nova has gotten me to appreciate their talents. DnA seems to have found the perfect little niche with Marvel’s cosmic characters. I would certainly like to see DnA take a stab and Mar-Vell or maybe Adam Warlock.

In the end, I had to give the Che for the best read of the week to Justice Society of America #14. Johns finally gets this story arc rolling with an incredible fight scene. And Eaglesham’s artwork was impeccable.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Amazing Spider-Man #556
Countdown to Final Crisis #3
Titans #1
Wolverine #64

The Winner: Titans #1

I found Amazing Spider-Man #556 to be another pedestrian read. Maybe it is just me, but this entire Brand New Day story is so generic and shallow. Believe me, I had serious issues with JMS’ run on Amazing Spider-Man, but I don’t view Brand New Day as the proper solution.

Countdown to Final Crisis #3 did provide for a nice brawl scene between Superman and Darkseid. And we did get to see the Atom come through in the clutch. However, the horrendous handling of Mary Marvel’s character completely ruined this issue for me. It was painful to read Superman-Prime styled dialogue coming from Mary Marvel’s mouth.

Wolverine #64 was another dull read. This story arc is so repetitious and plodding. This is a title that feels like Marvel could care less about the quality of the writing since they know it is going to pop large sales numbers no matter what.

However, I had to give the Sequential Methadone Award of the week to Titans #1. Winick turned in the unimpressive and stale read that I expected. I have already hammered this title in my review so I’m not going to rehash everything here. Suffice it to say that this was a uninspired and uncreative issue that lacked anything interesting or different to entice comic book readers to purchase this title.

It is pathetic that when handed the iconic Teen Titans roster that this was the best Winick could come up with. Based on this first issue, I have little faith for this title ever realizing its full potential as long as Winick is the writer.
The Winner: Titans #1

So congrats to Justice Society of America #14 for winning the Che for the week and congrats to Titans #1 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.

  1. You’re not enjoying Aaron’s current Wolverine arc? I think this is the best the title’s been in years (okay, damning with faint praise; I mean its actually really good); plus, naked Mystique.

Next up is an eight-issue epic with Millar and McNiven set in post-apocalyptic future (that apparently ties with Millar’s FF story).

  2. Keep up the great work on your site. Just a small editorial point. At the end you need to update the Che to JSA, not Project Superpowers. Even though I think Project Superpowers could win 2 weeks in a row. Its really good.

  3. i am with islandliberal, i think that wolverine is the best it has been in a long time. I am really liking this mystique arc, even though it is just filler between whatever happened last and millar/mcniven run. I am liking this game of cat and mouse that is going on, i just think that it could have been over and done with by now, it is getting repetitive. Also, i think that nova is easily in the top five books marvel is publishing very under-rated book. Cant wait for guardians of the galaxy.
