Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From September 10, 2008

Last week was another disappointing selection of comic books. We have gotten back-to-back weeks with nothing more than a very ordinary offering of comic books. I am struggling to find titles worthy enough of a nomination for the Che. Since All Star Batman #10 did not officially come out last week I have removed it from the running for the Che for this week. That pretty much left me without many choices since I did not think highly of the rest of the selection of comic books from last week.

The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Big Hero 6 #1

The Winner: Big Hero 6 #1

During a normal week, Big Hero 6 #1 would not be enough to win the Che. This was a fun little read and the best of the unimpressive selection of titles I got last week.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Amazing Spider-Man #571
Booster Gold #12
Secret Invasion #6
Trinity #15

The Winner: Secret Invasion #6

We certainly have no shortage of titles for the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award this week. Amazing Spider-Man #571 was another unimpressive read. I just don’t feel like wasting any time or energy on talking about this title at all.

Booster Gold #12 was a real disappointment. Dixon turned in an issue that read like pure filler. The story was disjointed and hopped all around like a chicken with its head cut off. I am glad that Dixon’s two issue time waster is over. The sooner than Jurgens takes over control of this title the better.

Trinity #15 was another pedestrian read. This title has done nothing at all to grab my attention and get me excited. One way that I judge a comic book is how well do you remember the story a couple of days after you read it. I read a ton of comic books each week. And really good issues stick with me. Now, truly awful issues will also stick in my mind as well. An absolute stinker usually remains permanently etched in my mind no matter how hard I try to forget it.

On the other hand, dull and boring reads that fall around the 5 out of 10 Night Girls range are the kind of issue that I have trouble remembering by the end of the week. And that would be Trinity #15. Trinity has been so unexciting and average that I have trouble remembering what happened last on this title. It seems like it has been a lot of commotion and noise without any real substance or interesting plot progression.

Still, in the end, I had to award the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week to Secret Invasion #6. Marvel’s “big event” continues to be nothing more than a fraud. Secret Invasion was slow, dull and repetitious. This issue had no action and had average dialogue. In short, it seemed that Bendis was simply twiddling his thumbs for this entire issue trying to waste as much time as possible in order to draw out this event.

So congrats to Big Hero 6 #1 for winning The Che Award of the week and “congrats” to Secret Invasion #6 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.

  1. I’d probably give Best of the Week to Secret Invasion: Inhumans; I’d place it just below Incredible Hercules and Captain Britain and MI: 13 in the tie-in tiers (plus it’s setting up “War of Kings” next year). Good interplay between the members of the royal family, Medusa and Crystal were both hot and kicked plenty of ass, and Tom Raney’s art was lovely.

I also liked the latest Wonder Woman, with the Queen of Fables.

  2. I too will vouch for SI: Inhumans. I’ve never read an Inhumans comic before this series, but jumped in because it’s an SI tie-in and to introduce myself to these characters. Wow, I’m impressed!

The story is riveting, the art is amazing, even the coloring looked awesome (and how often does someone complement a comic book’s coloring?).

And you’re definitely right about Medusa and Crystal. Whew!

  3. Negative comments? “Sacred Invasion” has been one of the few bright spots in the entire ill-conceived Secret Invasion crossover. And the action continues in the latest issue of Hercules which pits the Amazons against the Atlanteans, with Herc caught in the middle.

You’re definitely doing yourself a disservice if you aren’t reading iHerc.
