DC Comics is my first love, but I have read my share of older Marvel Comics, even owning a few trades (Dark Phoenix for example). My friendly neighborhood comic shop owner, one of the few comic fans I know older than myself, pointed this comic to me, mentioning they are using the original X-Men. I then heard that Issue 1 at least, was self-contained. All that combined made this a worthy shot to take.

Commentary:
I’m not doing a synopsis for this comic. The story is simple and contained, and doesn’t need to be spoiled here. Suffice it to say each of the original X-Men (Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Angel, Ice Man, and Beast) get highlighted and the story ties it all together very well. The adventure is the prop that lets us into the early training and development of 5 special mutants into a team. The art is good if a little exaggerated. It certainly helps tell the story. The story, most importantly the characterization, is fun and right on target. This would be a great comic for someone who has seen the X-Men in movies or cartoons. I’m on board for the rest.
