One World Under Doom #6 Review

One World Under Doom #6 Review

We are officially in the second half of the One World Under Doom event. Thus far, Doctor Doom has proven that he has an answer for everything the heroes try to do to reign in his rule over the world. Doctor Doom has done this by showing the public and the heroes he is living up to what he says about the utopian society he is creating. Though there was a major curve ball thrown by Maria Hill in the middle chapter of this event that could change everything.

Before getting to this review, I will be changing our review format. Rather than straight forward review, the new format will break down the specific highlights and weakness, if any, of the comic book. This is the new review format that will be used. With that said let’s get into how One World Under Doom #6.

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #6 SOLICITATION

“Doom’s reign has been a success for months – with even some of the heroes questioning if they’re on the right side. A final desperate gamble is conceived, and Reed reveals a terrible secret he’s acquired about Doom’s global domination – but will it be enough? And what has Doom been hiding under that Latverian Dome? All is revealed – at terrible cost! It’s the beginning of the end for some, and the beginning of a new age for others…” – Marvel Comics

HIGHLIGHTS OF ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #6

1) Mr. Fantastic vs Doctor Doom: Eternal Rivals

A comic book rivalry that will never get old is the one between Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom. Ryan North and R. B. Silva fully tap into this with the live debate for the world to see dominating One World Under Doom #5. Through this debate North is able to utilize Reed and Doom to break down a lot of problems with the Marvel Universe. Both bring up valid points that you can see each side of the debate.

Silva does a great job tapping into Doom’s ability to manipulate emotions to connect with others. It all highlights why Doctor Doom was able to turn the world in his favor and against the heroes. This leaves Reed to use his way of using logic to simply buy the heroes time to turn things around. It ultimately makes One World Under Doom #9 one of the best examples of the magic of Mr. Fantastic and Doctor Doom’s rivalry.

2) Horrifying Truth About Latveria

The debate between Mr. Fantastic and Doctor Doom makes what the rest of the heroes do in One World Under Doom #6. Mr. Fantastic was clearly going to lose the debate without some help. That is where Invisible Woman, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch step up as they are able to finally enter Latveria, with the Avengers help. In the process they are finally able to learn the horrific secret that Doctor Doom has been hiding from the world. Silva in particular nails how big of deal it is with the way Invisible Woman, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch react to seeing how Doctor Doom placed Latveria’s citizens into a Matrix-like device to maintain his immense power.

3) Doctor Doom Always Looks Out For Himself First

Ultimately both the debate with Mr. Fantastic and the revelation of Latveria’s status quo highlights what makes Victor Von Doom the Doctor Doom we love to hate. No matter what he may say Doctor Doom will always look out for what will help gain and maintain the most power. If it results in improving the world than it is just a happy coincidence. To be sure, Doctor Doom brings up a lot of great points about heroes failures. There is no getting around that. But what Doctor Doom did to become the Emperor of Earth supersedes everything and his reaction is a reminder of why he is the ultimate villain.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK IN ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #6

1) Doctor Doom Reminds Everyone Why The Avengers Aren’t Needed

While the Avengers help Invisible Woman, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch get into Latveria they quickly disappear. And if anything, One World Under Doom #6 damages the Avengers credibility the most. While Doctor Doom brings up the X-Men and Fantastic Four, a case could be made the Avengers were his biggest targets. Because at least the X-Men and Fantastic Four have shown to help society in various ways. The Avengers have just focused on being defenders and One World Under Doom has been a constant reminder of that. Given the Avengers importance to Marvel that is likely not what they wanted to be the result of their latest big event.

FINAL THOUGHTS

One World Under Doom #6 does a great job at moving us into the final stage of Marvel’s latest big event. The debate between Mr. Fantastic and Doctor Doom is a reminder of why their rivalry is special. Which is elevated by the revelations made by Invisible Woman, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch about how Doctor Doom gained his unlimited power. That all launches One World Under Doom into its endgame in an exciting way.
