ABSOLUTE BATMAN #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Scott Snyder

Artist: Nick Dragotta

Colorist: Frank Martin

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Absolute Batman #10 puts us on a journey unlike any you’ll find in comic book form. That journey is through the immense survival instincts that Absolute Bruce Wayne has. This is the part of Bruce that is constantly tested as he tries to escape the prison Bane and Dr. Ark M placed him in. You really feel how far Bruce had to take things with each escape attempt. The flashbacks with Bruce’s inner circle and present-day scenes of Martha Wayne growing concern for her son’s disappearance all added to the tension of what Bruce went through.

Bruce’s experience in Absolute Batman #10 also did a lot to the greater world building of the Absolute Universe. Even with the entire issue taking place in one location there was a lot done with building up how Joker, Bane, and Dr. Ark M have shaped Absolute Gotham City. The world building is just on another level and it all really emphasized how Batman is an extension of Bruce. The ending leaves us wondering even more if the Absolute Universe has put to many obstacles for Batman to overcome.

ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Kelly Thompson

Artist: Hayden Sherman

Colorist: Jordie Bellaire

Letterer: Becca Carey

Absolute Wonder Woman #10 is a phenomenal showcase for Hayden Sherman’s art style. While Kelly Thompson certainly does a lot of great character work with all the dialogue it is Sherman’s artwork that steals the show. From the maze Wonder Woman is stuck in the present or the past trials of young Diana, Sherman creates such a dynamic feel to everything that is going on. There is a feeling that we don’t know what to expect Wonder Woman will face around every corner of the maze she is stuck in. The imagination that goes with that in every page elevates the story to another level.

Thompson also does a wonderful job understanding how to develop Diana’s voice in the past and present-day sequences. Both versions of Diana inform the other. In the process a complete narrative is built that helps to get you even more invested in Diana as a character and those she interacts with.

IMPERIAL #2

Best Comic Books: Imperial #2

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Artists: Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini

Colorist: Federico Blee

Letterers: Cory Petit and Ariana Maher

When it comes to delivering on a big spectacle of a comic book event Imperial #2 can stand as a great example of just that. Jonathan Hickman along with artists Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini go all out with the powers of the Marvel Universe going to war against Wakanda. The scale is grand as Wakanda must defend itself from all sides of the Marvel Universe. The entire battle being set in space made the whole “attacked from all sides” aspect be literal in this case.

The grand war we see take place all elevates the importance of how delicate the political balance is in the entire Marvel Universe. The Skrull ending up being the true antagonist who causes Wakanda to be seen as a cosmic enemy to make it even better. The Skrull finally appears to be the big threat they once were decades ago. Now the stage is set for our heroes to find a way to create a new balance so that chaos isn’t the new normal for the Marvel Universe cosmic structure. Which leads to even greater anticipation to find out what Hickman and co. big plans are for the second half of Imperial.

STORM #10

Best Comic Books: Storm #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Murewa Ayodele

Artist: Lucas Werneck

Colorist: Alex Guimaraes

Letterer: Travis Lanham

The “Thunder War” finally kicked off in Storm #10. With that comes the start of the big story that Murewa Ayodele and Lucas Werneck have been building developing since this series started. If this first chapter is any indication of how things will go in “Thunder War” than we are in store for an epic big event-type story with Storm at the center.

What helped give Storm #10 the feeling of a big event kicking off is how it is truly the start of a payoff nine issues in the making. There is feeling that Ayodele and Werneck are going to be rewarding fans for seeing their vision of Storm through. It is exactly what you want to see as a fan. And it is all being done in a story that will further elevate Storm as her Omega Mutant-level status is put on full display.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jason Aaron

Artist: Juan Ferreyra

Letterer: Shawn Lee

Teenage Ninja Turtles #10 is example of how important it one’s on decisions are. In this case, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello learn that the hard way with how they choose to defend themselves. To be fair to our favorite turtles there is a reason why they choose Donatello to speak for them during their public trial. They have emotionally and physically been pushed to the brink. And it was Donatello through his belief their father was still with them through the dead rat he has been carrying that brought them together again.

Though this choice was quickly shown to be a mistake and just further highlighted how the world really is against the Hamato Clan. The Foot Clan have infiltrated every part of New York City’s system that Donatello’s lack of defense made the turtles easy pickings. While this certainly creates greater concern for Leo, Raph, Mickey, and Donny there is a major ray of hope at the end of TMNT #10 that appears. And it is a ray of hope that long-time fans will certainly be excited for. I certainly am.

TITANS 2025 ANNUAL

Best Comic Books: Titans 2025 Annual
Credit: DC Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer & Artist: Phil Jimenez

Colorist: Arif Prianto

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Titans 2025 Annual wasn’t just a spotlight on Donna Troy’s character. Phil Jimenez’s approach to delivering Donna’s life story wasn’t just about giving a modern take but one that can now be evergreen for the character. There is a sense that Jimenez maximizes the 40 pages he was given to tell Donna’s story. In maximizing the page count there isn’t anything that feels like is left out. We get a full picture of the important portions of her life, embrace all the complications Donna has dealt with. The complications are what make Donna such an intriguing character with a ton of untapped potential.

What takes Donna’s story in Titans 2025 Annual to another level are the relationship choices. Jimenez did a great job using Donna’s brother-sister relationship with Dick Grayson to push her more grounded approach to life even when she grew up being mentored by Wonder Woman and the Amazons. It helps drive home why she has had a more grounded life than her mentor with her complicated family and love life. This will hopefully help give her even greater momentum as she comes into her own as the current Titans leader.

TRANSFORMERS #22

Best Comic Books: Transformers #22

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson

Artist: Jorge Corona

Colorist: Mike Spicer

Letterer: Rus Wooton

With each passing issue we see how the choices made continue to impact the entire cast of the Energon Universe’s Transformers. This is once again spotlighted in Transformers #22. Whether the consequences are good or bad for the Autobots or Decepticons really drives home why the reader needs to pay attention to everything going on. At some point every action will come around with some sort of payoff.

Creating the sense of payoff makes the twists that end up happening in Transformers #22. And its not just about what happens with Optimus Prime and Megatron. Elita, Cliffjumper, Ultra Magnus, Spike, and many others are given big moments that play into the greater story. It creates greater excitement for what is to come as every character has a role to play.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #19

Best Comic Books: Ultimate Spider-Man #19

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Artist: Marco Checchetto

Colorist: Matthew Wilson

Letterer: Cory Petit

Ultimate Spider-Man #19 follows up the dramatic ending of the previous issue by punching us with even more high-stakes drama. More than anything, this issue is a reminder of how this series is the best example of a superhero soap opera. The struggles every character from the Spider-Man to Green Goblin to the Sinister Six and everyone in between, creates greater complexities to the story is unfolding.

The complexities in all the character dynamics help to get even more invested how Peter and Mary Jane deal with things. Hickman and Checchetto do an excellent job treating both characters as the adults you expect them to be with the lives they led. The reactions they each have to what is going on strengthens everything else going on in this story. The ending of Ultimate Spider-Man #19 highlighted this as the Ultimate Sinister Six war intensifies around them.

UNCANNY X-MEN #18

Best Comic Books: Uncanny X-Men #18
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Gail Simone

Artist: Luciano Vecchio

Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

The deeper Gail Simone gets into her run on Uncanny X-Men the better she is getting to balancing social commentary through the mutant lens. Uncanny X-Men #18 is an excellent example of this as we see Rogue’s team life in the Louisiana town they live in continues to develop. At the same time, the impact of the box office success of Murder Me, Mutina, horror movie that depicts mutants as monsters continues to create a whole new image problem for mutants.

Uncanny X-Men #18 most importantly emphasizes all the relationships Rogue’s team has built during this run. Simone and Vecchio do a great job at showing the growth of the team through their interactions with one another and their community. It creates an energy where we can get the fun of a X-Men themed county fair and more superhero action. It is all a reminder of how Uncanny X-Men has become the premiere title in the franchise.

ZATANNA #6

Best Comic Books: Zatanna #6
Credit: DC Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer & Artist: Jamal Campbell

Letterer: Ariana Maher

Zatanna #6 drove home that this series will be a strong contender for comic book of the year when we get to the end of 2025. This ending is beautiful in both the story it is told and a visual treat. You can easily tell what the story is through Jamal Campbell’s artwork. Because of that Campbell’s writing brings greater emphasis to the importance of what is going on and how Zatanna’s character is developed.

This ending also does an excellent job at showing who Zatanna is at this point in her life. She isn’t just a solo hero who does everything on her own. Zatanna has a long history of working with others whether it is part of the Justice League or partnering with her magical allies. Zatanna #6 highlights this with how the Justice League Dark help her out, which helps to elevate how big of a deal the villain of this story was. It all comes together to create amust-read comic book.
