Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #3 Review

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #3 Review

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion has been a disappointing mini-series thus far. The weaknesses have quickly been overshadowing that potential this mini-series had. It is unfortunate because the first issue showed a ton of potential for this to be a standout comic for the Ultimate Universe. The second issue failed to tap into that potential. Let’s see if things turn around with Ultimate: Spider-Man: Incursion #3.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: INCURSION #3 SOLICITATION

“MILES’ FIRST CONFRONTATION WITH THE MAKER’S COUNCIL! Silver Samurai attacks interloper Miles Morales! Fortunately, a band of mutants calling themselves the X-Men come to his aid! What will Miles make of the dark history of this alternate universe now that he is faced with the reality of what the Maker has done?” – Marvel Comics

HIGHLIGHTS OF ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: INCURSION #3

Ultimate Universe vs Marvel Universe Sense of Time

One of the things that has helped separate this version of the Ultimate Universe from its original counterpart and the main Marvel Universe is its sense of time. That is something Miles Morales learned about quickly as two months have already passed since he arrived in the new Ultimate Universe. In a way it provides some meta commentary on how normal it is for Marvel big events to take place over the course of a short period of time. Which is why Miles having to spend two months searching for his sister had an even greater impact. It throws him off his game in a way no other story he’s been involved with has thus far.

Miles Morales Chemistry with Maystorm and Nico Minoru

Even though there was a language barrier between them Miles Morales was able to find a way to communicate with Ultimate Maystorm and Nico Minoru. The language barrier made the traditional superhero fight for a first time team-up between Miles and Ultimate X-Men leads be understandable. It also helps to highlight how Miles is one of the better Marvel heroes in quickly becoming friends with other heroes. Miles, Maystorm, and Nico find a way to not only become friends but have instant chemistry. That chemistry pays off with the trios fight against Silver Samurai and Viper.

Ultimate X-Men Prove They Should Be Major Players For Ultimate Universe

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #3 was a big step forward for the Maystorm and Nico Minoru. Of all the Ultimate Universe characters the ones that have felt most disconnected are the Ultimate X-Men. Even though they still fought similar threats to their series adding in Miles helped make them really feel part of the rest of the Ultimate Universe. And as they showed how well they can work with Miles, the Ultimate X-Men could be wild cards for the heroes side of things. This is hopefully a hint that the Ultimate X-Men will be a big part in the war against The Maker and his Council in Ultimate Endgame.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK IN ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: INCURSION #3

The Maker’s Council Formulaic Use

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion has quickly become just a big tour of the Ultimate Universe. That has created a sense of just running around in circles as Miles is stuck in a Tom and Jerry routine with The Maker’s Council members. It certainly isn’t helping The Maker’s Council members look weak as they struggle against the young trio of Spider-Man, Maystorm, and Nico Minoru. This goes against how powerful they have been shown to be in other Ultimate Universe titles.

Being Reminded Why The Ultimates Are Losers

Miles Morales being able to escape from being with Ultimate Giant Man and Wasp does nothing to help The Ultimate low credibility. The Ultimates not even being around to find and help out Miles against The Council further highlights how ineffective they are as a superhero team. There is a lack of competence with The Ultimates right now. It makes it even harder to believe The Ultimates stand a chance against The Council once The Maker returns. Which is not good for Deniz Camp, whose run on The Ultimates has had way to many ups and downs.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #3 was a step-up from the previous issue. Miles Morales chemistry with the Ultimate X-Men was a big key in this improvement. There are still problems with how Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar are portraying The Maker’s Council. Hopefully the last two issues are able to tap the strengths of this mini-series to help the weaker parts.
