With August having come to an end that means it’s time to select the Best Comic Books of the month. August felt like a month that was setting up a lot of major storylines and events that will shape the rest of 2025. Through all that set-up we got a ton of quality release that built investment in so many different universes. With that in mind, find out what made my list of the ten best comic books released in August 2025.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #11

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Scott Snyder

Artist: Clay Mann

Colorist: Ivan Plascencia

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Absolute Batman #11 changed the main perspective from Bruce Wayne to Bane. This opened the door to view the Absolute Universe, specifically Batman’s corner, from a new perspective. Bane’s view on the world and those he interacts with like Absolute Joker gives greater depth to how different things are in the Absolute Universe. You feel like you understand characters even better because we had this opportunity to view things from a different perspective.

This perspective gave a whole different tone to the big Batman vs Bane fight we get in the second half of the issue. The brutality that was shown as Bane ended up dominating Batman was not something I thought we would see. It took what can be considered as brutal in a Batman comic to another level. It left Batman in a state that makes us wonder what the results will be for the Absolute Universe.

BLACK CAT #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: G. Willow Wilson

Artist: Gleb Melnikov

Colorist: Brian Reber

Letterer: Joe Caramagna

The best debut comic books are those that give the feeling that we are being presented with the full idea of the series. That’s exactly what G. Willow Wilson and Gleb Melnikov accomplish with Black Cat #1. They don’t give everything away but the entire foundation for Black Cat’s latest series is presented here. From tone to action to supporting cast, we are presented with a full world centering around Felicia Hardy.

Not holding anything back shows that Wilson and Melnikov are going all out to get over why Black Cat is a great solo hero. She has a great ability to adapt from conducting her latest heist to fighting the Lizard to bantering with her crew and Spider-Man. All of that is done while setting up the groundwork to utilize recent developments in Amazing Spider-Man to create a greater story for Black Cat.

G.I. JOE #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Joshua Williamson

Artist: Andrea Milana

Colorist: Lee Loughridge

Letterer: Rus Wooton

This second full story arc for G.I. JOE has shown that Baroness and Cover Girl could really carry their own comic book if the creative team desired. G.I. JOE #10 is an excellent example of this as Major Bludd places Baroness and Cover Girl where they have to kill each other to leave alive. This situation forced the chemistry between the two JOEs to be tested very early in them working together.

This entire story arc is a reminder of how the JOEs have not been together for very long. Because of that Baroness and Cover Girl have to really work on the fly in order to figure out how to trick Major Bludd. Their ingenuity was really impressive to see, especially considering this is the first time they are working as a pair.

The main story with Baroness and Cover Girl is made stronger by the sub-plot involving Clutch and Hound. The way what Clutch and Hound are doing continue to open G.I. JOE up to explore other facets of the Energon Universe is very engaging. It all builds excitement for what is to come as the G.I. JOE and Transformers franchises are connected even more.

GREEN LANTERN #26

Best Comic Books August 2025: Green Lantern #26

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jeremy Adams

Artist: V Ken Marion

Colorist: Romulo Fajardo Jr

Letterer: Dave Sharpe

The Starbreaker Supremacy has really leaned into it being a giant, old-school spectacle comic book story. Green Lantern #26 is the best example of the old-school approach to storytelling with Hal Jordan and company confronting the current Emotional Spectrum avatars. Jeremy Adams does a great job at getting over the parasitic nature of these Emotional Spectrum avatars. It gets further into how the Fractured Spectrum has pushed the emotions to great extremes.

With the Emotional Spectrum avatars doing everything to temp Hal, Sinestro, Jo, Carol, Guy, Kyle, and others it worked to set up the big moment. That moment was giving us the best Kyle Rayner moment we’ve had in years. The White Lantern powers being used as a power-up made the moment feel bigger. It set up the bigger moment of seeing all the Lanterns we know and love riding the different Emotional Spectrum avatars. The visual took the Starbreaker Supremacy story arc to another level.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #10

Best Comic Books August 2025: Justice League Unlimited #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Mark Waid

Artist: Dan Mora

Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain

Letterer: Ariana Maher

Justice League Unlimted #10 is the best issue of this series thus far. That is thanks to this issue being able to use everything told the DC All In era to propel it to get that claim. Mark Waid and Dan Mora get into how the heroes have been rushing decisions since Absolute Power ended. Those decisions include how quickly the heroes formed the Justice League Unlimited was done.

Batman and Wonder Woman being on the side that they need to more detailed vetting while Superman does not want them questioning their friends and allies alligance was fitting. It was a great example of what makes them the Trinity isn’t just their powers and abilities but the weight their decisions have.

The Trinity’s discussion going on as we have Darkseid and his Dark Legion strike elevated things. Things are coming together to get us to the next stage for the creative teams involved in developing the DC All In direction. That next stage has even greater dangers around the corner, that includes the upcoming DC KO event.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES III #1

Credit: BOOM! Studios & IDW Publishing

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Ryan Parrott

Artist: Vincenzo Federici

Colorist: Raul Angulo

Letterer: Ed Dukeshire

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1 is for fans of one or both franchises. That is really all it needs to be as that is the promise from seeing the Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles on the cover. You want to see the two teams doing cool things together. You want to see their villains, Lord Zedd and Shredder, being pure evil villains. We got both those things.

By delivering on what fans want to see Ryan Parrott and Vincenzo Federici are able to deliver a fantastic continuation of one of the most epic crossovers. The sense of desperation from the Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles gets over how bad it is that Lord Zedd and Shredder have teamed up. That led to an unexpected dark moment to conclude this first issue is a reminder of who Lord Zedd is when he is written at his most evil.

STORM #11

Best Comic Books August 2025: Storm #11
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Murewa Ayodele

Artists: Mario Santoro and C.F. Villa

Colorists: Fer Sifuentes-Sujo and Alex Guimares

Letterers: Travis Lanham

Reading Storm #11 is a reminder that there is an unlimited budget to the stories that can be told in this medium. Murewa Ayodele, Mario Santoro, and C.F. Villa go from personal conversations to epic Kaiju-level battle scenes in a seamless way. Being able to shift between the different types of scenes help put over the Thunder War as a big event.

The big event scope of Thunder War helps to further elevate Storm’s character. The best thing is that this scope fits into the progression Storm has had since she became an Omega Level Mutant during the Krakoa era. You buy into Storm interacting with cosmic beings like Galactus and Eternity. Because of that buy in the threats Storm is facing are elevated as well.

TRANSFORMERS #23

Best Comic Books August 2025: Transformers #23
Credit: Image Comics & Skybound Entertainment

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson

Artist: Jorge Corona

Colorist: Mike Spicer

Letterer: Rus Wooton

Transformers #23 does its job at delivering a strong penultimate chapter and setting the stage for the finale of Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona creative run. There is a feeling after reading this issue that Johnson and Corona will be giving us an ending that is as epic as it can possibly be.

Creating the feeling going into the final issue for their run is thanks to how Johnson and Corona create greater dramatic tension. Everything that happens between the Autobots and Decepticons feels as personal as they’ve ever been. Both sides are in it to end things between them. In the middle of all that the human characters are also shown to play an important role. Creating this sense of importance around everyone involved in this story makes the anticipation for the final as high as they can be.

ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #8

Best Comic Books August 2025: Ultimate Wolverine #8
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Chris Condon

Artist: Alessandro Cappuccio

Colorist: Bryan Valenza

Letterer: Cory Petit

Ultimate Wolverine #9 maximizes the fact that events in the Ultimate Universe are going on in “real time.” Because full months pass with each issue there is a sense that the overall narrative The Opposition and The Maker’s Council is moving forward. Specifically, characters can’t waste time. With every month that passes there is the risk one side could get stronger or gain an advantage.

We see how the risk The Opposition take are things that they must do. The cost that comes with these risks they take with the battle against Ultimate Archangel. Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio did a great job using how The Maker altered things to create a deadly version of Archangel. The battle is brutal with The Opposition suffering some losses but by the end progressing their overall mission. In the process we see Ultimate Wolverine’s personal character move forward with greater investment in what happens to him.

UNCANNY X-MEN #19

Best Comic Books August 2025: Uncanny X-Men #19
Credit: Marvel Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Gail Simone

Artist: David Marquez

Colorist: Matthew Wilson

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Gail Simone’s Uncanny X-Men run has gotten better with each passing issue she writes. Uncanny X-Men #19 shows this at it is simply a fun comic book. Simone has a clear vision of how to write each member of the cast for Uncanny X-Men. That makes it so the series can tell a long-term narrative through one-shot issues or short story arcs.

And even with this issue having a focus on Jubilee there are a lot of strong character moments for the other X-Men. Giving moments to a good portion of the cast drives home this is a team book. It makes the spotlight on Jubilee much better. Simone does a great job at having Jubilee drive the main story. It was a comic book that Jubilee has needed for a while as she has largely been just part of a team or in the background. The narrative around her helps to further develop the greater Uncanny X-Men story involving the societal threats mutants are facing in the From The Ashes direction.
