“Hell Comes to Birmingham” ends with a bang. The only letdown was in the art department. At times it seemed rushed. I guess that was why Mike Collins and Cam Smith were brought in. The art was above average but not up to the standard set in the previous issues.

The team comes together to battle Plotka. Plotka is a duke of Hell. Plotka gains the energy he needs to create the Mindless Ones (first seen in the Lee/Ditko Dr. Strange stories) by trapping people in the Dream Corridor. If you willing agree to stay there, Plotka will bring your fantasy to life.

Captain Midlands is bought by the memory of his dead wife. He brings our heroes to Plotka in exchange for eternity with the fantasy of his wife being alive. Plotka almost gets Captain Britain by “reuniting” him with his missing wife. The team manages to defeat and capture Plotka. Captain Midlands is arrested as a traitor to the crown.

The cruel twist of fate is that Captain Britain’s wife was trapped in the Dream Corridor. She could not catch up to him to tell him the truth. Captain Britain will continue his search, not realizing how close he was to her.

The end of Captain Midland’s story surprised me. This ending would not have happened in the Avengers but it makes sense here.

I can’t wait for the next issue. The next storyline features Dracula. Blade is now a member of MI13 so the players are in place for a vampire war. The Tomb of Dracula was one of my favorite series. I will be curious how Cornell handles Dracula.

Highly recommended.
