Cindy Moon, better known as Silk, is a character that quickly rose up the ranks of being an important Spider-Man Family when she debut in 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man #4. Dan Slott directly connected Silk to Spider-Man’s origin as we learned that the same spider that gave Peter his powers also gave Cindy her’s. Since then we’ve seen Silk play a large part in Spider-Verse, have her own ongoing and, most recently, joining the Agents of Atlas. Now Marvel has announced Silk will be returning to her solo adventures with a new ongoing series. The announcement of Silk’s new ongoing has a big connection to one big storyline in Amazing Spider-Man.
Now before I continue the rest of this article will have spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #40 that was released this past Wednesday.
With that warning out of the way, the thing about Marvel’s announcement of Silk’s new ongoing that raised an eyebrow was Cindy’s new job. In the announcement we learn that Cindy is going to be working as part of J. Jonah Jameson’s team at Threats & Menace. This so happens to be the same place Norah Winters, who originally recruited Jameson, offered Peter Parker a job at.
While you would think this job offer is because of Norah’s friendship with Peter and knowing his journalist background as a photographer that wasn’t the reason. We learned at the end of Amazing Spider-Man #40 that Norah’s Threats & Menace is being bank rolled by the Chameleon.
Being a Spider-Man villain immediately makes you concerned for what Peter may be getting himself into. What makes this a bigger development is the fact that Chameleon was shown to swear revenge on Spider-Man for his role in the death of Kraven the Hunter at the end of the “Hunted” storyline.
Now with Cindy also working at Threats & Menace it looks like Silk could possibly further develop the bigger storyline that is being developed with Chameleon as the main antagonist. Working directly with Jonah does indicate that Cindy will be working directly with Norah. That would mean that, like Spider-Man, Silk will eventually cross paths with Chameleon. It would definitely add to how important the Silk series is as it’ll be the place the Chameleon storyline gets more development while Amazing Spider-Man is busy with the Kindred story.
The tie-in to the events going on in Amazing Spider-Man is a strong hook for the series. But it will also be important for Silk to develop her own set of villains. We already see that being something Maurene Goo and Takeshi Miyazawa will develop with the addition of businesswomen Saya and cat demon Kaya. Saya’s connection to Cindy Moon in particular could mean she could become Silk’s arch nemesis. We’ll see what happens when Silk #1 releases in July 2020.
