Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 Review

Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has lived up to expectations. Its been one big Godzilla kaiju battle after another with the Power Rangers Megazords mixed in. Has that come with a deep, multi-layer story? No, but really that is not what this series ever needed to be. Based on the cover for Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the giant kaiju battles are going to get even bigger with a certain three headed kaiju appearing to change the game. Let’s see how things go with Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4.

As soon as it appears on the battlefield King Ghidorah completely overwhelms Godzilla and the Power Rangers with its massive size and power.

Having been betrayed by Rita, the Xiliens help free Tommy Oliver and give him his Morpher back so he can help the Power Rangers and Godzilla. Tommy immediately morphs into the Green Ranger.

As the same time Rita is unable to control King Ghidorah no matter what she does. After defeating the Dino Megazord and Godzilla, King Ghidorah starts going after Rita.

With no other choice Rita powers up Goldar, Scorpina, and her other monsters to fight King Ghidorah. End of issue.

REVIEW

Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 is one big loud monster battle and how you can’t help but love it. As we’ve seen with the previous issues of this mini-series crossover event, Cullen Bunn and Freddie E. Williams II know exactly what worlds they are playing with. They aren’t trying to do more than what fits with a comic book that is titled Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Right away Bunn and Williams pick up on the hype of the Power Rangers and Godzilla teaming up against Rita Repulsa’s monsters. Both through the Bunn’s writing and Williams’ artwork you get how this was the last thing that Rita and the Xiliens wanted. Those fears are proven true with how the Dino Megazord and Godzilla completely overwhelmed every monster they threw at them.

This made Rita’s desperate gamble in turning against the Xiliens in order to summon King Ghidorah the perfect way to escalate things. Bunn has Rita pull this move without knowing what kind of unstoppable force King Ghidorah is. That includes that King Ghidorah is so powerful that it cannot be controlled by Rita’s magic.

The shocked reaction of King Ghidorah’s immense size from the Power Rangers added to the aura of Godzilla’s greatest enemy. All the Power Rangers immediate reaction leading them to wish that Tommy and his Dragonzord was there to help further drove home how terrifying Williams had King Ghidorah look. That fear turning out to be completely true as King Ghidorah completely dominated both Godzilla and the Dino Megazord was a spectacle that helped to escalate this story to an even higher level than before.

That sense of escalation works in well with how now Rita Repulsa has been forced to try to use her minions and other monsters to take down King Ghidorah. The visual of King Ghidorah ready to take on Goldar, Scorpina, and other kaiju size monsters was exactly the hook ending you want to see.

At the same time this all puts into question how the Power Rangers and Godzilla will overcome all the odds. We know that Tommy Oliver will finally be able to rejoin the fight with his Dragonzord. What we don’t know is if they will be enough given what we’ve seen go down in these four issues of Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. That creates even more excitement for how things will be resolved in the final issue of this crossover event.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Cullen Bunn and Freddie E. Williams II continue to work their magic with how they continued to escalate the battles to a higher level with Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4. King Ghidorah makes an immediate impact that changes everything about this crossover event. It all leads to an ending that grows the hype to read the final issue of Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to be at its highest point.
