My Hero Academia Chapter 311 Review

My Hero Academia Chapter 311

My Hero Academia has entered uncharted territory for its universe as the hero society that was once prosperous has been turned on its head. Heroes are no longer worshipped and praised. Instead they are despised by the same people they swore to protect. That is all thanks to the actions by All For One, Tomura Shigaraki, and the League of Villains/Paranormal Liberation Front. Because of this Izuku Midoriya has become one of the biggest targets of the League of Villains as his One For All Quirk is one of the things All For One is now targeting. How long can Midoriya last on the run? And what is going on with the rest of the remaining heroes in the world? Let’s find out with chapter 311 of My Hero Academia.

Synopsis: At a convenience store Endeavor fights villains who are using support items against him. Endeavor uses his Ignited Arrow move to defeat the villains and turns them over the police.

Later, Endeavor goes to meet up with Best Jeanist and Hawks. The heroes are then suddenly confronted by protestors who all want Endeavor, Best Jeanist, and Hawks to leave their city. The people blame the heroes for letting the villains once in prison lose on the world and Dabi for burning members of their families. Endeavor, Best Jeanist, Hawks quickly get in their car as the protestors start throwing garbage at them.

While driving Hawks gets an update on the search for the Paranormal Liberation Front location from Edgeshot. Afterwards Hawks suggests Endeavor they put more distance between them and All Might and Izuku Midoriya so the media doesn’t catch on to Deku being a target. Endeavor agrees so they lessen the burden on Midoriya since the villains have gone underground for the moment.

Endeavor, Hawks, and Best Jeanist then talk about the possibility of the villains are keeping a low profile is because they were ordered to since the current fracture in the hero society makes it easy for All For One to strike. Endeavor brings up how this isn’t happened because of what Izuku said about All For One still preparing Tomura Shigaraki’s body to completely handle the All For One Quirk and transfer into Shigaraki when the process is done.

Hawks brings up how it is bugging him that it seems odd that Shigaraki’s rage is key to All For One completing the transfer process as the reason behind that is not clear. With that said the three agree that their best option is to take the fight to the villains by expanding their search even if it means fewer heroes on the streets.

Best Jeanist suddenly gets an alert coming in to their car.

While trying to keep up with Deku’s movement in his car All Might reflects on how Izuku is possibly pushing himself to much, remembering what Nighteye told him about rest being key. Izuku’s GPS signal suddenly gets turned off. Before All Might can properly react a grenade explodes right next to his car.

Elsewhere, Deku gets his cell phone hit out of hand by a kunai knife. The kunai knife has a speaker on it with the person who threw it telling Deku he is going to come with them.

On a nearby rooftop the person is shown to be a woman (the same person who freed Kai Chisaki/Overhaul during the prison riot in My Hero Academia Chapter 297) who is using a sniper gun arm-like Quirk, with Overhaul is next to her. She tells Deku if he doesn’t come quietly he’ll lose his limbs.

Not seeing Overhaul with her, Deku believes All For One sent a villain after him. End of chapter.

The Good: Chapter 311 of My Hero Academia is more of the same of what we have been getting since the end of the Paranormal Liberation War Arc. That is not a bad thing as the character work we get continues to be highlight. Though the more we are getting of this type of content the more Kohei Horikoshi is getting to the point of repeating a lot of what has already been said by characters.

Once again where this current arc continues to excel is with getting across how much pressure Izuku Midoriya currently feels now that he has broken away to become a vigilante hero as Deku. Even though he didn’t have a large physical presence in chapter 311 of My Hero Academia Izuku is the main driving force behind what is going on. That is shown with how we learn that it has become known to the public that All For One is after someone other than the heroes that are known. Hearing this gives a greater reason for why we see it emphasized whenever we’ve seen Izuku post-timeskip that he has this huge target on his shoulder. That target grew even larger with how the public is aware of this even if they don’t know it is Izuku who All For One is after.

Horikoshi throws us one big curveball in Izuku’s current arc by throwing in Overhaul back into the equation. As soon as you see the armless Overhaul with the woman with a sniper Quirk the threats coming after Izuku became even bigger. Before the Paranormal Liberation War Arc it was Overhaul that had the longest story arc as the main villain. Returning now could mean many things for My Hero Academia because we know that he was defeated by Izuku but also has reason to hate Shigaraki and the League of Villains for taking his arms, basically turning him Quirkless. What side Overhaul plays could turn him into a major wild card for the series moving forward.

The same goes for the unnamed sniper Quirk user working for Overhaul. Horikoshi does a great job continuing to make her stand out after her first appearance in chapter 297. She was one of the characters that you immediately had your eye on as a dangerous villain during the prison riot. Seeing that she has a sniper gun-like Quirk confirms how dangerous of a villain she is. Everything about her visually along made her come across as a badass who will back up her words. It’ll be interesting to see why she ended up working with Overhaul and what her own goals are.

The danger that Izuku is in as Deku is also elevated by the fact that we saw All Might also being targeted. Seeing someone launch an attack meant to kill All Might shows us that the former Number 1 hero is also in great danger. Not only do people know All Might and the fact he doesn’t have powers but by tailing Deku he is positioning himself to be just as big of target as his protégé. How All Might possibly survives the explosion and changes his approach because of this near-death experience is something to keep an eye out for.

The protestors who confronted Endeavor, Best Jeanist, and Hawks once again put over how volatile things are for heroes right now. They are outright hated by the people that once worshipped and never questioned them. Even if the heroes are working with the police and government to stop the escaped villains it is not enough to turn public opinion. The damage the villains did during the Paranormal Liberation War Arc, specifically Dabi’s reveal of being Endeavor’s long lost son, is something that will be felt for the remainder of My Hero Academia. That is exactly how it should be and this just further elevates the stakes of The Final Act Saga.

The Bad: For as much good as there is in My Hero Academia Chapter 311 this is the chapter were we get to the point that Horikoshi is repeating what we already know. The entire conversation that Endeavor, Best Jeanist, and Hawks have in the car is everything we know about the current situation for the heroes and villains. It was honestly just an extended conversation from what the three heroes already had about All For One and Izuku’s situation in My Hero Academia Chapter 309.

Adding to why the conversation come across as repetitive is that the conclusion Endeavor, Best Jeanist, and Hawks had was exactly where they were when the conversation started. Nothing new was learned about how the heroes are operating outside of the number of resources they have is already stretched out. Even them saying that they’ll add more distance between them and Deku does nothing to put over the current situation Izuku is in.

In the end it just felt like a waste of time with three heroes who already got massive spotlights during the Paranormal Liberation War Arc. This panel time would’ve been better used to show us what has happened with UA High School and Class 1-A post-timeskip. Even if Izuku Midoriya is the star of the series we have spent just as much time getting to know Katsuki Bakugo, Ochaco Uraraka, Shoto Todoroki, and the rest of Class 1-A. This is after all My Hero Academia. Hopefully Horikoshi isn’t losing sight of this as Izuku’s friends hero journey is something fans are just as invested in.

Overall: When it comes to the danger Izuku Midoriya by being hunted by All For One and the League of Villains, My Hero Academia Chapter 311 continues to add to that narrative. The inclusion of Overhaul and a badass new villain added a major wild card to Izuku’s story. Unfortunately, this chapter suffers from repetitive story beats when it comes to how hero society’s current status quo is with the scenes involving Endeavor, Hawks, and Best Jeanist. Hopefully we get to see Class 1-A brought back into the fold rather than continuing to just focus on the Pro Heroes.
