ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9 SOLICITATION

“FINALE! Doom has confronted all of Earth’s heroes in battle – and he’s won. What’s more, he’s used the magical power of Sorcerer Supreme to ensure that this victory has become a fixed moment in time: a thing that will stand forever, impervious to magic or time travel alike. But unbeknownst to Doom, in that climatic moment that can now never be changed, the seeds of Doom’s downfall were also fixed for all eternity.

Left with an intolerable defeat that cannot be changed, Doom makes a choice he can never undo – and the rest of the world will pay his price… …it all comes down to this in the big finale of ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM!

PLUS: If the Sorcerer Supreme falls, who will rise to take his place? Find out here!” – Marvel Comics

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9

It’s All About Doctor Doom

Undoubtedly One World Under Doom #9 takes a risk by telling a story that is mostly from Doctor Doom’s perspective. It is a gamble from a narrative standpoint doesn’t fully work out. But where it does it does emphasize how even Doctor Doom can’t factor every possibility. This being a driving force as he literally exhausts every option, including talking to what equates to the Marvel Universe’s God, has some intrigue. The length he goes to makes the aftermath with how his actions in One World Under Doom is viewed have greater weight.

It All Goes Back to Reed Richards vs Doctor Doom

Ryan North knew that part of what was the linchpin of this event was the rivalry between Reed Richards and Doctor Doom. While that was not the full focus of this finale their rivalry was a clear driving force behind Doctor Doom’s actions. Even when he makes his noble sacrifice there is a tone to Doctor Doom’s actions that it was done to show why he is better than Reed Richards. That is driven home by his final action in making Reed the executioner for the Will of Doom. It is a move that effectively makes Fantastic Four even more interesting.

Doctor Doom Forever Changes the Earth-616

The actions by Doctor Doom have changed things for the Marvel Universe’s Earth. We see that through the reactions of every day people towards the end of One World Under Doom #9. Specifically, that this event sets Earth back even further as all countries appear to close their borders and blaming Doctor Doom for this action. It certainly creates some interest in what this will mean for Earth’s place in the greater Marvel Universe. Because we are seeing an expansion of the cosmic side of things. But will all the work done by the Avengers, X-Men, and others to make Earth a universal power be undone by Doom’s actions as well?

R.B. Silva Epic Artwork Doesn’t Nee Action to Stun

The best aspect of One World Under Doom #9 is undoubtedly R.B. Silva’s artwork. Silva and colorist David Curiel have the job of making a fairy tale narrative look as epic as possible. They have to do that without a true action sequence. Instead the action is done by making Doctor Doom’s decision all appear to be as big as possible. Whether it is the locations Doctor Doom goes or the energy exuded by Doom and other characters, everything looks larger than life. Its exactly what you want to make the finale of a big event to look as epic as possible.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK IN ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9

Fairy Tale Narration Gamble Not Worth Taking

The fairy tale approach to the narrative turned out to be a gamble that didn’t work out as Ryan North intended it to. For an event that dominated Marvel’s direction for the majority of 2025, pausing several major storylines and titles direction in the process, the finale had to pay off that investment. The fairy tale narrative structure does not work to pay off that investment. Instead we get this very narrow view of what Doctor Doom’s actions are. That is after the previous eight issue showcased the impact of Doctor Doom’s dictatorship. To only get that from Doctor Doom’s perspective fails not just Doom as the villain but the heroes.

Marvel Universe Heroes are Cowards

The way things end with this event make the Marvel heroes really like cowards since they just seemed to go into hiding in the aftermath. North plays into that with one normal person commenting on the Avengers not speaking about what Doctor Doom did. But by only addressing it in a few panels just shows how having Doctor Doom’s fairy tale narration dominate this final issue was detrimental. The narrative choice makes you less interested in the Avengers specifically as they were the loudest in leading the rebellion against Doctor Doom. But in the moment they should be uniting the world post-Emperor Doom they tuck their tails and hide.

One World Under Doom #9 - Doctor Doom & Valeria Richards

Valeria Richards Deus Ex Machina

Doctor Doom and Valeria Richard’s familia relationship is something that was only tapped into towards the end of this event. With this series being a nine issue event it should’ve been a greater running sub-plot for the entire time. There is no excuse to saving it as there was plenty of time throughout One World Under Doom. But the focus was on the superhero side of the story. It ultimately fails Valeria Richard’s character the most because she is just a sacrificial witness to Doctor Doom’s actions. It’s too bad because Valeria deserve better than just being given a deus ex machina role in order to wrap up the story in nine issues.

Marvel’s Track Record Fails Doctor Doom’s Final Fate

As much as Silva’s artwork does its best to make Doctor Doom’s “death” feel final you just can’t buy it. That is the curse that Marvel’s created for themselves because of their treatment of character deaths. Especially with Doctor Doom set to be the main villain for the Marvel Cinematic Universe it won’t be long before he’s back in the comics. Maybe Marvel will surprise us and not do that by the end of 2026. But having seen Marvel’s track record with character deaths it is tough to believe Doctor Doom is gone.

FINAL THOUGHTS

One World Under Doom #9 looks great. Artist R.B. Silva and colorist David Curiel make this finale look as epic as possible even without a major action sequence. It is just to bad the narrative choice of how to end Emperor Doom’s rain is a swing and miss. There are elements to the fairy tale angle that works. But it is such a dominant narrative device that it creates a feeling that this finale ran out of time in order to maximize its full potential.
