The Amory Wars: No World For Tomorrow #1 Review

The Amory Wars is not a series I heard about until the most recent Kickstarter campaign was going on for the final chapter of the franchise. The full title of this comic book is The Amory Wars: Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume II but shorten to Being a first issue rather continuing the numbering from the 2018 series does seem to be an entry point for The Amory Wars in this final chapter. With that in mind I wanted to see how entering now as a new reader could build that investment level. We got the chance to check out an early copy of The Amory Wars: No World For Tomorrow #1. Find out how it turned out with our advanced review.

REVIEW

Reading a story that has reached the final part of its saga is a much different experience than I’m used to. For all the sci-fi fantasy elements reading The Amory Wars: No World for Tomorrow #1 to be a mystery of discovering what is going on. It’s a mystery that works to a certain point. That said, there’s a lot that as a new reader I found myself lost though there is a lot to be appreciated in how the story moves forward.

In terms of how The Amory Wars: No World for Tomorrow #1 sets the stage for the finale of this entire saga it works. There is a general sense of watching the opening ten minutes to a movie with where we find all the initial characters that are present. There is certainly a feeling that this is the endgame for the story that Claudio Sanchez and Chondra Echert have been telling.

What made this opening chapter work as well as it does is Guillaume Martinez artwork. A distinct mood is set that we are picking up this story on a somber note. It is a reminder of Star Wars in that way. The switch to different types of settings gave Martinez a greater freedom to help set the tone of this story. Each setting had its own vibe that complimented the characters that appeared in each setting.

Martinez’s artwork made paying attention to what characters are saying to be part of trying to figure out what is going on. The way characters interact is clearly paying off all the development that went into telling this narrative. While that does not make it welcoming for new readers like myself Sanchez and Echert are making sure to speak to the audience of this series.

Something that as a new reader would’ve helped is if at least the opening page had a quick recap of events. Martinez showed they have the talent to tell a narrative in three or four panels. After all, it has been it’s been about six years since the last part of The Amory Wars saga came out. It would’ve not taken away from the stories pacing to have the opening page to act as a silent recap to what brought us to this ending.

Part of having this feeling of needing a recap page was that there were a lot of nameless characters and interactions that you are expected to know what is going on. There are points where simply knowing the names of characters or the titles they have in relation to this universe would’ve improved the sense of importance to scenes. It would’ve of been certainly helpful to connect the dots for what is going on.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Amory Wars: No World for Tomorrow #1 has all the elements that fans that have followed decade plus long saga from the beginning. It gives off the vibe that things are reaching their end point. For fans looking to get into The Amory Wars you’ll be better off reading the previous volumes that came before rather than jumping in at the end of the saga expecting to understand everything.
