April 2023 Single Issue Comic Book Sales Rankings

It is time to check out the April 2023 single-issue comic book sales rankings. Things are getting murkier in terms of actual unit numbers. So, we will have to settle with going to ICv2 for their Top 200 sales rankings. It is not as good as actual unit numbers, but we have to work with what we get.

Keep in mind, that the Top 200 single-issue comic sales charts are based on orders tracked by the ComicHub system at local comic book shops selling American comics. This includes over 3,000 stores selling American comics worldwide. As always, it is important to remember that these rankings are also not actual sales. These rankings only represent the number of units ordered by local comic shops.

ICv2 has respectfully asked that we not publish their sales rankings here on our website. So, you can check out the Top 50 for April 2023 for free or opt for a pro membership and get the Top 200 for April 2023 over on ICv2 and then come back here for a detailed analysis of the April 2023 sales rankings!

April 2023 Top 200 Single Issue Comic Rankings

The Battle for the Top 10

Marvel Comics took first place in emphatic fashion with seven comics in the Top 10. What a phenomenal Top 10 showing as Marvel Comics is pimp-slapping the hell out of the competitors. Month-over-month sales were up over the six comics that Marvel Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics also had seven comics in the Top 10 in April 2022.

Marvel Comics drew from four different franchises to power its Top 10 success. However, do not be fooled, it is the Spider-Man franchise that is the straw that stirs the Top 10 drink. The Spider-Man franchise accounted for four of the Top 6 comics. That is simply astounding. There is no franchise dominating comic books like Spider-Man at the moment.

Scarlet Witch continues to boggle the mind as Scarlet Witch #4 took the number 8 spot. I am stunned at the success that this young title has had. I find the writing to be rather mid. However, the artwork is fantastic. At any rate, the consumers love Wanda’s new title. I am sure that even Marvel Comics has to be surprised by this incredible early success.

DC Comics took a distant second place with just two comics in the Top 10. The months may change but the story remains for pathetic old DC Comics. Month-over-month sales were flat as DC Comics also had just two comics in the Top 10 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also flat as DC Comics had just two comics in the Top 10 in April 2022. I mean…I guess DC Comics is at least consistent even if it is in a miserable fashion.

Both of DC Comics’ titles in the Top 10 were Batman titles starring Bruce Wayne. Same old same old.

Image Comics managed one comic in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were up as Image Comics had no comics in the Top 10 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had no comics in the Top 10 in April 2022.

The Battle for the Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 65,000 to 50,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics crushed all of the other publishers by placing seventeen comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up over the sixteen comics that Marvel Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up over the fourteen comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 25 in April 2022. This is impressive.

Fantastic Four #6 continues to be a sales beast as it took the number 15 spot. It is a real joy to see the First Family of Marvel having such wonderful sales success with their new title. Fantastic Four is definitely a comic worth purchasing.

Twenty-two issues in and Moon Knight is still a Top 15 title as it took the number 11 spot. Nobody saw that coming. Nobody.

DC Comics had just six comics in the Top 25. Cue sad trombone sound. Month-over-month sales were down from the seven comics that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down from the nine comics that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in April 2022.

There is nothing good here at all for DC Comics in the Top 25. This must be jarring given the rollout of the “new” DCU that DC Comics has been focusing on in 2023.

DCeased War of the Undead Gods concluded in the Top 25. This title has been a big hit for DC Comics. I am sure we will get more from the DCeased franchise at some point in the future.

Image Comics managed two comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that Image Comics had in the Top 25 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up from the zero comics that Image Comics had in April 2022.

The Battle for the Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 49,000 to 30,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics had thirty-three comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the thirty-two comics that Marvel Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the twenty-nine comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Ghost Rider #13 took the number 30 spot. Yes, this title has slid out of the Top 25, but this is still a great sales number for a Ghost Rider title. It is the success of minor characters like Scarlet Witch, Moon Knight, and Ghost Rider who have never been big sellers is another big difference between Marvel Comics and DC Comics. DC Comics just cannot seem to generate interest in any of their minor characters.

Daredevil #10 took the number 33 spot. Daredevil did get released in the final week of April, but there is no doubt that Daredevil has stopped being a constant Top 10 title. Having said that, this title would certainly be in the Top 25 if it came out in any week other than the last week of April.

DC Comics placed just eleven comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down from the fifteen comics that DC Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down from the thirteen titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

This is an absolute nightmare for DC Comics. These numbers in the Top 50 are terrible. Of course, Five of the eleven DC Comics titles are from the Batman franchise. Three of the eleven DC Comics titles are from the Superman franchise. One is a combined Batman/Superman title. DC Comics managed just two comics in the Top 50 outside of the Batman and Superman franchises.

Image Comics managed three comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the one comic that Image Comics had in March 2023. However, year-over-year numbers were down from the four titles that Image Comics had in the Top 50 in April 2022.

IDW Publishing had two comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the one comic that IDW Publishing had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up from the one comic that IDW Publishing had in April 2022.

Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the zero comics that Dynamite Entertainment had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the zero comics that Dynamite Entertainment had in April 2022.

The Battle for the Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 29,000 to 25,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics Godzilla stomped everyone by placing forty-nine comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the forty-five Marvel Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the forty-two comics Marvel Comics had in April 2023.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #2 crashed and burned as it fell from the number 25 spot all the way out of the Top 50 and down to the number 62 spot. This is a Stephanie Phillips-written title so I am not at all surprised that readers fled this title after the second issue. It appears that Cosmic Ghost Rider will certainly be out of the Top 75 by the next issue and probably out of the Top 100 in a couple of issues.

Dr. Strange #2 also plummeted like a rock as it fell from the number 9 spot all the way out of the Top 50 and down to the number 63 spot. Now, Doctor Strange #2 did ship in the last week of April. So, there is hope that this title may rebound up the rankings next month.

DC Comics had just seventeen comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down from twenty-two comics in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down from twenty-one comics in April 2022.

Image Comics managed six comics in the Top 75. Three of the six titles were from the Spawn franchise. Month-over-month sales were up from the five comics that Image Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Image Comics also had six comics in the Top 75 in April 2022.

IDW Publishing had two comics in the Top 75. Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 75.

The Battle for the Top 100

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 76-100 range typically sell in the 24,000 to 18,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics took first place with sixty-one comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up over the fifty-seven comics that Marvel Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up over the fifty comics that Marvel Comics had in April 2022.

DC Comics took an extremely distant second-place finish with just twenty-five comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the twenty-nine comics that DC Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down sharply from the thirty-three comics that DC Comics had in the Top 100 in April 2022. There is nothing but bad news for DC Comics in the Top 100.

Image Comics took third place with just nine comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were flat over the nine comics that Image Comics had in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Image Comics also had nine comics in the Top 100 in April 2022.

IDW Publishing and BOOM! Studios tied for fourth place with two comics apiece in the Top 100. Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic in the Top 100.

The Tom Taylor Award For The Writer With The Most Titles In The Top 50

The gold standard of American comic books is to make the Top 50. Even in a weak market such as the current comic book market. Historically, the Top 50 is where you would find the titles that sold well enough to never fear cancellation. Once you get outside of the Top 50, historically, sales numbers were below the 30,000 unit mark. The titles between the number 51 and 100 spots are like average European professional football teams all vying to stay out of the regulation end of the table.

There were several writers who managed to place more than one title in the Top 50.

Zeb Wells achieved this feat with Amazing Spider-Man #23 and Amazing Spider-Man #24.

Chip Zdarsky had two titles with Batman #134 and Daredevil #10.

Al Ewing had two titles with Venom #18 and Storm & The Brotherhood of Mutants #3.

Benjamin Percy had two titles with Wolverine #32 and Ghost Rider #13.

Charles Soule had two with Star Wars #33 and Star Wars Hidden Empire #5.

Kieron Gillen had two with Immoral X-Men #3 and Sins of Sinister Dominion #1.

Joshua Williamson had two with Superman #3 and Green Arrow #1.

Simon Spurrier had two with Superboy Man of Tomorrow #1 and Nightcrawlers #3.

Jason Aaron had two with Avengers Assemble Omega #1 and Star Wars: Dark Vader Black, White & Red #1.

However, two comics in the Top 50 was not good enough to win the Tom Taylor Awasrd this month. That is because several writers went over that mark.

The writing duo of Jackson Lanzig and Collin Kelly had three comics in the Top 50 with Guardians of the Galaxy #1, Captain America Cold War Alpha #1, and Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #11.

Tom Taylor also had three comics in the Top 50 with Adventures of Nightwing #103, DCeased War of the Undead Gods #8, and Superman John Kent #2.

U-oh, tie-breaker time! In the case of a tie, we first look at the comics that are in the Top 50. The edge is given to the writer who has more regular monthly comics in the Top 50 versus a writer who may have a collection of regular monthly titles and one-shots in the Top 50.

So, with that in mind, one of the comics from the team of Lanzig and Kelly is a one-shot issue. On the other hand, two of Taylor’s comics are regular monthly comics and one is a mini-series. A mini-series beats a one-shot issue in the tie-breaker.

Therefore, the winner of the Tom Taylor Award of April 2023 is…Tom Taylor! There is a reason the award has the name it has.

Battle of the Franchises

The Spider-Man franchise took first place with four titles in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50.

The X-Men franchise came in second place with one title in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50.

The Avengers franchise took an extremely close third place with one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. The slim difference was that even though Avengers and X-Men tied in the number of Top 50 titles, X-Men had more Top 25 titles than the Avengers franchise.

The Batman franchise came in fourth place with two titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50. This must be alarming for DC Comics. The Batman franchise normally takes first or second place every month. Since DC Comics relies so heavily on the Batman franchise to power its sales success, DC Comics cannot afford to have it begin to soften in the sales charts. This could be a sign that the consumer is beginning to suffer from Batman franchise fatigue due to the unrelenting number of Batman franchise titles that DC Comics floods the market with each month.

The Superman franchise and Star Wars franchise tied for fifth place with zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50.

Marvel Comics and DC Comics Debut Issues

Captain America Unforgiven #1 (Marvel Comics)

DC Silent Tales #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

Unranked

Rocket Raccoon: Marvel Tales #1 (Marvel Comics)

Miracleman: Marvel Tales #1 (Marvel Comics)

As we normally do, we will address many of these debut issues in the franchise sections below. However, there are several debut issues that we will tackle here in this section.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 had an excellent debut coming in at the number 4 spot. This franchise is incredibly popular with MCU fans. There is no doubt that Marvel Comics would like to capitalize on the MCU success and make the Guardians of the Galaxy a consistent Top 25 seller every month. Next month will tell if this debut number is a mirage or the sign of a new hit title for Marvel Comics.

Warlock Rebirth #1 debuted at the number 28 spot. It is never a good sign when a new title debuts outside of the Top 25. I love that Marvel Comics hired the classic creative team of Ron Marz and Ron Lim to deliver this new mini-series. I enjoyed this title. However, I fear that Warlock Rebirth is going to end up being a niche title that concludes outside of the Top 75.

Planet of the Apes #1 debuted at the number 50 spot. This is a terrible debut number and a sign that Planet of the Apes is destined to be outside of the Top 75 possibly by the next issue. Disney has not had much success handling the other Fox properties like Predator and Aliens, so I am not surprised to see Planet of the Apes going in this direction.

Alien #1 debuted outside of the Top 75 at the number 76 spot. Yes, Alien #1 shipped in the last week of April. But this debut is so low in the chart that I am not sure shipping earlier in the month would have made that much of a difference. Perhaps it would have debuted in the 50-60 range. Either way, this is another Fox property that Disney is not having much success in restarting.

Big Events

Immoral X-Men #3 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)

Sins of Sinister Dominion #1 (Marvel Comics)

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #3 (Marvel Comics)

Captain America Cold War Alpha #1 (Marvel Comics)

Nightcrawlers #3 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)

Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #11 (Marvel Comics)

The Flash #796 (One-Minute War) (DC Comics)

Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #3 (Of 4) (DC Comics)

Wonder Woman #798 (Revenge of The Gods) (DC Comics)

Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #4 (Of 4) (DC Comics)

Captain America Symbol of Truth #12 (Marvel Comics)

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #2 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

Sins of Sinister continues to be a solid seller. No, we are not getting a Top 10 big event. But three of the four Sins of Sinister-related titles all finished in the Top 25. That is pretty good for a minor big event story.

Captain America Cold War Alpha #1 took the number 29 spot. This issue kicks off the new big event story that runs through Steve Rogers’ title and Sam Wilson’s title. This is not that great of a debut number. But, for a minor big event that is running through two titles that regularly sell poorly this is not that bad of a sales number.

Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods took the number 81 and number 118 spots. This mini-series was a total failure. It failed to generate large consumer interest.

Star Wars Franchise

Star Wars Darth Vader Black, White & Red #1

Star Wars Return of The Jedi Ewoks #1

Star Wars #33

Star Wars Hidden Empire #5 (Of 5)

Star Wars Yoda #6

Star Wars the High Republic #8

Star Wars Doctor Aphra #30

Star Wars Bounty Hunters #33

Star Wars Return of the Jedi Jabba’s Palace #1 (Resolicitation)

Star Wars the High Republic Blade #4 (of 4)

Star Wars the High Republic #7 (Resolicitation)

Star Wars Darth Vader #32 (Rescolicitation)

Star Wars The High Republic Adventures Jedi Quest (One-Shot)

Star Wars Sana Starros #3

Star Wars The High Republic Adventures The Nameless Terror #2 (Of 4)

The Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50. This was better than March 2023 when the Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as the Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Star Wars continues to have a Disney problem. The two Star Wars titles in the Top 25 are both starring characters from the original Star Wars trilogy. The four Star Wars titles in the Top 50 also star characters from the original Star Wars trilogy. In fact, the top five Star Wars titles all feature characters from the original Star Wars trilogy. Even worse, eight of the top nine Star Wars titles either feature characters from the original Star Wars trilogy or are set in the timeline between the original trilogy and the Disney Star Wars movies.

The one Disney Star Wars title is the High Republic title which is selling well outside of the Top 50. There is no doubt that Disney continues to have a problem with getting readers excited about anything having to do with Disney Star Wars.

Star Wars Return of the Jedi Ewoks #1 hopes to cash in on massive fan-fueled nostalgia. However, this issue debuted outside of the Top 25 coming in at the number 27 spot. That is not a great debut number for a new title trying to cash in on nostalgia. This title is written by Alyssa Wong who has never had any sales success before, so I am expecting this title to drop in the sales rankings.

Star Wars Darth Vader Black, Red & White #1 debuted at the number 20 spot. This is a solid debut. Keep in mind that this title also was released in the final week of April. So, there is a good chance that this would have been a Top 15 and maybe even a Top 10 title if it had been released earlier in April. I am curious to see if Jason Aaron can make this title a consistent Top 25 title.

Star Wars Sana Starros #3 continued its freefall in the rankings as it dropped from the number 134 spot down to the number 154 spot. At this rate, it is going to be a struggle for this title to conclude in the Top 200. This should not surprise anyone as this title is written by a YA novelist and those types of writers have never had any sales success for Marvel Comics.

Spider-Man Franchise

Amazing Spider-Man #23

Spider-Man #7

Amazing Spider-Man #24

Venom #18

Miles Morales Spider-Man #5

Carnage #12

Spider-Gwen Shadow Clones #2

Venom Lethal Protector II #1 (Of 5) (Resolicitation)

Marvels Voices Spider-Verse #1

Red Goblin #3

Hallows’ Eve #2

Amazing Spider-Man #22 (Resolicitation)

Venom Lethal Protector II #2 (Of 5)

Mary Jane And Black Cat #5 (Of 5)

Amazing Spider-Man #21 (Resolicitation)

Miles Morales Spider-Man #4 (Resolicitation)

Spider-Gwen Shadow Clones #1 (Resolicitation)

The Spider-Man franchise had four titles in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. This was better in the Top 10 but worse in the Top 25 and Top 50 than in March 2023 when the Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, seven titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as the Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Amazing Spider-Man continues to be a sales beast. I know this title gets tons of hate. But, the fact remains that it took two of the Top 3 spots in the sales charts. Amazing Spider-Man #23 took the number 1 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #24 took the number 5 spot. That is insane.

Amazing Spider-Man also had a resolicitated issue in the Top 100 as Amazing Spider-Man #22 took the number 83 spot and another resolicitated issue in Amazing Spider-Man #21 almost snuck into the Top 100 by taking the number 111 spot.

Amazing Spider-Man has been highly controversial and divisive. Maybe people are hate-reading this title. Maybe people are buying it out of a long-standing loyalty to the title. Or maybe lots of people are enjoying this title. All we know is Amazing Spider-Man is a total sales monster.

Spider-Man #7 bounced up from the number 21 spot to the number 2 spot! I am burned out on Dan Slott so I have not read this title. However, readers clearly cannot get enough of the Spider-verse. This will certainly encourage Marvel Comics to continue investing in the Spider-verse.

Venom #18 bounced back up from the number 30 spot to the number 6 spot. When Venom does not ship in the last week of the month it has been a lock to be a Top 10 seller.

Miles Morales continues to stay in the Top 15 as Miles Morales Spider-Man #5 took the number 14 Spot. So far, this reboot for Miles’ comic has done well in substantially increasing his sales numbers.

Spider-Gwen Shadow Clones #2 suffered a large drop from the number 19 spot down to the number 39 spot. The next issue is going to be pivotal for the success of this title. There is a good chance this title is out of the Top 50 with the next issue.

Hallows’ Eve completely crashed and burned in the sales rankings as Hallows’ Eve #2 dropped from the number 3 spot all the way down to the number 73 spot. That is a breathtaking fall. Clearly, readers were not impressed with whatever story Erica Shultz delivered in that debut issue.

Mary Jane and Black Cat #5 concluded the mini-series at the number 93 spot. I know this comic shipped in the final week of April, but that is a shocking drop from the number 20 spot in March 2023.

X-Men Franchise

X-Men #21

Wolverine #32

Immoral X-Men #3 (Of 3)

Sins of Sinister Dominion #1

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #3

Nightcrawlers #3 (Of 3)

Rogue & Gambit #2

X-Force #39

Deadpool #6

X-Men #1 (1963) Facsimile Edition (2023 Printing)

X-23 Deadly Regenesis #2 (Of 5)

X-Treme X-Men #5 (Of 5)

New Mutants Lethal Legion #2 (Of 5)

Deadpool #5 (Resolicitation)

Bishop War College #3

Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #3

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #2 (Resolicitation)

X-Cellent #2 (Of 5)

X-Men #20 (Resolicitation)

The X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. This was largely the same as in March 2023 when the X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were down in the Top 10 but up in the Top 25 and Top 50 as the X-Men franchise had two titles in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

X-Men continues to be the flagship title for this franchise as X-Men #21 took the number 7 spot.

Wolverine #32 bumped up from the number 16 spot to the number 11 spot. Logan continues to be a lock for the Top 25 every month.

Immoral X-Men #3 concluded its series at the number 16 spot. That is a great finish for this three-issue mini-series.

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #3 bounced up from the number 40 spot to conclude this mini-series at the number 25 spot. Again, another great finish for an X-Men mini-series.

Nightcrawlers #3 dropped from the number 33 spot to the number 41 spot as it concluded its three-issue mini-series. This is a respectable finish for Nightcrawlers.

Rogue & Gambit #2 suffered a death spiral as it dropped from the number 12 spot all the way down to the number 43 spot. This is not a surprise to me. This is a Stephanie Phillips title and Phillips has never had any sales success. So, I was expecting a big drop for the second issue. It appears that Rogue and Gambit should be outside of the Top 50 by the next issue.

X-Force #39 came in the number 61 spot. This title seems to have found its happy space in the high 50s to the low 60s in the sales rankings.

X-23 Deadly Regenesis #2 crashed all the way from the number 26 spot down to the number 72 spot. This does not surprise me since this title did debut outside of the Top 25. Still, that is a massive drop as it appears that many readers were not that impressed with what Erica Shultz delivered in the debut issue. X-23 looks like it will conclude its five-issue mini-series outside of the Top 100.

X-Treme X-Men #5 bounced up from the number 124 spot and concluded its mini-series at the number 97 spot. Whew! X-Treme X-Men just managed to conclude in the Top 100! I enjoyed this mini-series, but obviously, I am a part of a very small crowd!

New Mutants Lethal Legion #2 dropped from the number 70 spot down to the number 98 spot. Again, zero surprise since this New Mutants title is written by a writer who is a non-fiction and short story writer. Again, sales success is never had when Marvel Comics hires these random non-comic book writers. It looks like New Mutants Lethal Legion may conclude its five-issue mini-series outside of the Top 150.

Bishop War College #3 dropped from the number 136 spot to the number 145. Bishop War College has been the only sales dud of all the Sins of Sinister-related titles.

Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #3 took the number 150 spot. Even when this title ships early in the month it still struggles to even make the Top 150. This is a horrendous sales ranking for a title that is only in its third issue. I am not sure why Marvel Comics is obsessed with trying to shove this square peg in a round hole over and over again.

X-Cellent #2 dropped from the number 161 spot to the number 194 spot. This five-issue mini-series seems destined to finish its story unranked.

Avengers Franchise

Scarlet Witch #4

Avengers Assemble Omega #1

She-Hulk #12

Hulk #14

Captain America Cold War Alpha #1

Thor #33

Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #11

Invincible Iron Man #5

Thor #32 (Resolicitation)

Joe Fixit #4 (Of 5)

Captain Marvel #48

Avengers War Across Time #4

Captain America Unforgiven #1

Invincible Iron Man #4

I Am Iron Man #2

Captain America Symbol of Truth #12

Avengers Beyond #2 (Of 5)

Hulk #13 (Resolicitation)

Avengers Beyond #1 (Of 5) (Resolicitation)

Wasp #4 (Of 4)

Monica Rambeau Photon #5 (Of 5)

The Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. This was better than March 2023 when the Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were slightly up as the Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

She-Hulk #12 bounced up from the number 66 spot to the number 24 spot. It is awesome to see Jen rebounding in the sales rankings.

Hulk #14 dropped from the number 6 spot to the number 26 spot. This is because this issue shipped in the final week of April.

Thor #33 rebounded from the number 65 spot to the number 36 spot. Thor is still selling below what it used to do under Donny Cates’s hand. But, if Grønbekk can at least keep this title as a consistent Top 50 seller then Marvel Comics will probably not look to make a creative team change.

Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #11 shot up the sales rankings from the number 86 spot to the number 44 spot. No doubt that the Cold War story drove readers to this title.

On the other hand, Captain America Symbol of Truth #12 plummeted from the number 80 spot down to the number 134 spot. This title did ship in the last week of April. However, even shipping earlier in the month probably would not have helped this title sneak into the Top 100.

Invincible Iron Man #5 bounced up from the number 84 spot to the number 75 spot. And this title did this despite shipping in the last week of April. Invincible Iron Man still is not a sales beast, but maybe there is a chance that this title can eventually work itself back into the Top 50.

Captain Marvel #48 plummeted from the number 47 down to the number 88 spot. This is where we normally find Captain Marvel. I have no clue what caused that random sales spike in March 2023. At any rate, normalcy has returned to Captain Marvel.

I Am Iron Man #2 dropped from the number 106 spot down to the number 133 spot. It is obvious that there is little interest in this title.

Wasp #4 concluded its four-issue mini-series at the number 191 spot. This mini-series was a complete sales disaster. Marvel Comics can go back to ignoring the Wasp until we get another random mini-series in five to ten years or so.

Monica Rambeau Photon #5 concluded its five-issue mini-series at the number 199 spot. This title just barely avoided finishing unranked! Monica Rambeau Photon was an unmitigated sales failure. This is no surprise to me since Marvel Comics hired a sociology professor to write a superhero comic book. That is never a good idea. Only a Marvel editor would be dumb enough to think this was a brilliant idea.

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #7

The Batman franchise had two titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50. This was worse than March 2023 when the Batman franchise had two titles in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also down as the Batman franchise had one title in the Top 10, seven titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Bruce Wayne continues to power the success of the Batman franchise. Batman #134 took the number 2 spot and Batman & The Joker The Deadly Duo #6 took the number 10 spot.

Nightwing #103 bounced back up from the number 43 spot to the number 23 spot. It is great to see Dick Grayson back in the Top 25. DC Comics desperately needs Nightwing to be a strong seller because the Batman franchise is quickly running out of strong sellers outside of Bruce Wayne.

Batman Superman Worlds Finest #14 bobbed back up from the number 49 spot to the number 35 spot. I adore this title and wish it was back in the Top 25. But at least it is still a solid Top 50 title.

Poison Ivy #11 dropped from the number 36 spot down to the number 47 spot. This title continues to trend downward since DC Comics announced that it would go from being a mini-series to an ongoing series. The next few issues are going to be critical for Poison Ivy to try and remain a consistent Top 50 seller.

Detective Comics #1071 failed to make the Top 50 as it came into the number 52 spot. Having said that, this title did come out in the last week of April. So, I would not hit the panic button on Detective Comics at this point.

Catwoman #54 climbed up from the number 111 spot to the number 100 spot. This is not much of an improvement. There is no reason why a character as iconic as Catwoman is selling this poorly. DC Comics needs to commit some real talent at the writer position so Catwoman can hit her full potential.

Batgirls #17 came in at the number 122 spot which is normally where we find this title. It looks like this title is going to conclude its run in two issues well outside of the Top 100.

Harley Quinn #29 came in at the number 123 spot. Multiversity Harley Screws Up The DCU #2 came in at the number 130 spot. These sales numbers suck. There is no reason why a character as massive as Harley Quinn should be getting such garbage sales numbers. DC Comics must stop saddling Harley Quinn with terrible writers because it is killing her character.

Tim Drake Robin #8 came in at the number 193 spot. This title has been mercifully canceled by DC Comics and the final issue will be Tim Drake Robin #10. It will be interesting to see if the final two issues manage to stay in the rankings. I would not be surprised if this title concludes unranked.

Superman Franchise

Superman #3

Adventures of Superman Jon Kent #2 (Of 6)

Batman Superman Worlds Finest #14

Superboy The Man of Tomorrow #1 (Of 6)

Superman Lost #2 (Of 10)

Action Comics #1054

Action Comics #1053 (Resolicitation)

Superman #2 (Resolicitation)

The Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50. This was worse than March 2023 when the Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50. It is disappointing that the Superman franchise is already sliding down in month-over-month sales.

Year-over-year numbers were up as the Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Superman #3 slid down from the number 11 spot to the number 18 spot. That is not a massive drop, but DC Comics was probably hoping that Superman would either be climbing up the rankings or holding steady by just the third issue. It is imperative that Superman remains a consistent Top 25 seller. We will find out over the next few months.

Adventures of Superman Jon Kent #2 dropped from the number 23 spot to the number 32 spot. That is not a terrible drop. However, it looks like this mini-series may be on track to concluding outside of the Top 50.

Superboy The Man of Tomorrow #1 debuted at the number 46 spot. This is a bad debut number. I love Conner Kent and I wish that this title had done better. However, poor Conner has largely been mishandled and ignored by DC Comics. So, I am not surprised that this retro version of Conner is not all that appealing to many readers. It feels like a regression to me, and I am sure there are other readers who feel this way, too.

Superman Lost #2 dropped from the number 41 spot down to the number 53 spot. That is not that bad of a drop for a title that debuted so low in the sales rankings. This ten-issue mini-series may have a chance of concluding its story in the Top 100.

In April, Action Comics only shipped one issue: Action Comics #1054 which took the number 67 spot. Keep in mind that Action Comics #1054 shipped in the last week of April. In March 2023, Action Comics #1052 took the number 24 spot, and Action Comics #1053 took the number 78 spot. It is still too early to judge the sales success and potential of this title. Let’s see how this title does over the next few months and then reassess the newly redesigned Action Comics.

Wonder Woman Franchise

Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #3 (Of 4)

Wonder Woman #798 (Revenge of The Gods)

Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #4 (Of 4)

The Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. This was the same as March 2023 when the Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were the same as the Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50.

Lazarus Planet has been a sales failure. Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #3 came in at the number 81 spot and Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #4 came in at the number 118 spot.

On the slight plus side is that Wonder Woman #798 managed to crack into the Top 100 and take the number 86 spot. That is higher than most months for Wonder Woman. For DC Comics’ sake, they can only hope that Tom King’s name alone is enough to drive readers to the Wonder Woman franchise once he takes over the title.

Justice League Franchise

Green Arrow #1 (Of 6)

The Flash #796

The Flash #797

Dark Knights of Steel #10 (Of 12) (Resolicitation)

Black Adam #10 (Of 12)

The Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50. This was better than March 2023 when the Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were down as the Justice League franchise had one title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Green Arrow #1 debuted at the number 19 spot. Keep in mind that Green Arrow #1 debuted in the last week of April. So, this is actually a pretty damn good debut number! I have high hopes for this six-issue mini-series. It looks like Ollie’s new title is off to a nice start and has a chance of concluding in the Top 50.

The Flash #796 took the number 56 spot, and The Flash #797 took the number 71 spot. This is an improvement over March 2023 when the two issues of The Flash took the number 61 spot and number 90 spot. It is great to see The Flash trending upward. Hopefully, this continues going forward.

Blue Beetle: Graduation Day #6 (DC Comics)

There were zero mantle swap titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50. This was worse than March 2023 when there were zero mantle swap titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50.

Black Adam #10 took the number 152 spot. This mini-series continues to be another example of DC Comics delivering a story nobody was asking for. It looks like this twelve-issue mini-series will certainly conclude outside of the Top 150.

Blue Beetle: Graduation Day #6 was unranked. This title has been unranked since the third issue. I have to say that it is amazing that DC Comics continues to roll out Blue Beetle comics of any type given that the response from readers is always the same. At any rate, this was the final issue of Blue Beetle: Graduation Day.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #5 was unranked. This title has been unranked since the first issue. This mini-series has now finished. I would not think this character would get another mini-series anytime soon given the terrible sales numbers. But, with Marvel Comics you just never know.

Legacy Character Titles

Nightwing #103 (DC Comics)

Bloodline Daughter of Blade #3 (Marvel Comics)

Batgirls #17 (DC Comics)

Nightwing #102 (Resolicitation) (DC Comics)

There were zero legacy character titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50. This was worse than March 2023 when there were zero legacy character titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50.

Bloodline Daughter of Blade #3 continues its freefall in the rankings as it dropped from the number 82 spot down to the number 112 spot. This is not much of a surprise to me. Danny Lore is another one of those writers who are some rando with no history of writing superhero comics that Marvel Comics loves to hire even though they never have any sales success at all.

There was one female lead title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50. This was worse than March 2023 when there was one female lead title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as there were zero female lead titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Marvel placed three female lead titles in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were down as Marvel Comics had four female lead titles in the Top 25 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had two female lead titles in the Top 25 in April 2022.

DC Comics had zero female lead titles in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were the same as DC Comics had zero female lead titles in the Top 25 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were the same as DC Comics also had zero female lead titles in the Top 25 in April 2022.

Marvel placed four female lead titles in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were down as Marvel Comics had seven female lead titles in the Top 50 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had four female lead titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

DC Comics had one female lead title in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were flat as DC Comics had one female lead title in the Top 50 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as DC Comics had zero female lead titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Marvel placed seven female lead titles in the Top 75. Month-over-month numbers were down as Marvel Comics had eight female lead titles in the Top 75 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had seven female lead titles in the Top 75 in April 2022.

Marvel placed nine female lead titles in the Top 100. Month-over-month numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had nine female lead titles in the Top 100 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had eight female lead titles in the Top 100 in April 2022.

Marvel Comics obliterated DC Comics in this category. Again. It just is not close. DC Comics should be ashamed. DC Comics needs to put higher quality writers on their female lead titles and figure out how to properly handle the characters.

Blue Beetle: Graduation Day #6

There were zero minority lead titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50. This was the same as March 2023 when there were zero minority lead titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were down as there was one minority lead title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics need to completely reassess their approach to the titles in the minority lead category. The current approaches from both publishers are obviously not working.

There also continues to be a lack of diversity among the titles in the minority lead category. Thirteen of the titles starred Black lead characters. One title starred a Hispanic lead character. One title starred an Asian lead character. This needs to be addressed.

Marvel placed two minority lead titles in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were up as Marvel Comics had one minority lead title in the Top 25 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had one minority lead title in the Top 25 in April 2022.

DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were flat as DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 25 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were the same as DC Comics also had zero minority lead titles in the Top 25 in April 2022.

Marvel placed two minority lead titles in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had two minority lead titles in the Top 50 in xx 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as Marvel Comics had four minority lead titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were flat as DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 50 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as DC Comics also had zero minority lead titles in the Top 50 in April 2022.

Marvel placed three minority lead titles in the Top 75. Month-over-month numbers were up as Marvel Comics had two minority lead titles in the Top 75 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as Marvel Comics had five minority lead titles in the Top 75 in April 2022.

DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 75. Month-over-month numbers were the same as DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 75 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as DC Comics also had zero minority lead titles in the Top 75 in April 2022.

Marvel placed three minority lead titles in the Top 100. Month-over-month numbers were down as Marvel Comics had four minority lead titles in the Top 100 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as Marvel Comics had five minority lead titles in the Top 100 in April 2022.

DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 100. Month-over-month numbers were the same as DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 100 in March 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics also had three minority lead titles in the Top 100 in April 2022.

Marvel Comics won this category yet again. I mean 3-0 is not much of a win, but it still is a win. DC Comics should be embarrassed at how pathetic they have done in this category. There is no excuse for this poor performance.

Dead Titles Walking

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, titles outside of the Top 100 are usually selling under the 18,000 unit sales mark. These are the Marvel Comics and DC Comics titles that are dead titles walking.

Marvel Comics had twenty dead titles walking out of their fifty-seven new titles in April 2023. This means that 35% of Marvel Comics’ new titles in April 2023 were dead titles walking.

This was down from the twenty-nine dead titles walking that Marvel Comics had in March 2023. However, the percentage of the Marvel Comics’ new titles that were dead titles walking was flat as Marvel Comics also had 35% of their new titles as dead walking titles in March 2023.

Year-over-year numbers were up in a shocking fashion as Marvel Comics only had three dead titles walking in April 2022.

DC Comics had eighteen dead titles walking out of DC Comics’ forty-four new titles in April 2023. This means that 41% of the New DC Comics’ titles in April 2023 were dead titles walking.

This was down from the thirty-six dead titles walking that DC Comics had in March 2023 which comprised 58% of DC Comics’ new titles. However, keep in mind that DC Comics published sixty-two new titles in March 2023 which is considerably more than the number of new titles that DC Comics published in April 2023.

Year-over-year numbers were up as DC Comics had eighteen dead titles walking in April 2022. This has to be discouraging as they are rebooting so many titles as they try to create another “new” DCU.

The Tini Howard Award For The Writer With The Most Dead Titles Walking

There were only three writers with multiple Dead Titles Walking in April 2023. Becky Cloonan had two titles with Lazarus and Batgirls. Michael Conrad had two titles with Lazarus and Batgirls. Tini Howard had two titles with Harley Quinn and Elizabeth Braddock.

It looks like we have another tie so it is time for the tiebreaker. Just like with the Tom Taylor Award, ongoing monthly titles are worth more than a mini-series. Cloonan and Conrad each had one ongoing monthly and one mini-series. On the other hand, Tini Howard had two ongoing monthly titles. Therefore, Tini Howard is the winner of the Tini Howard Award for April 2023!

All right, that is it for April 2023 Will Marvel Comics continue its domination of the Top 200 in May 2023? We will find out. Until then, everyone stay safe and be good!
