Green Lantern Corps #20 Review

I took a leap of faith way back in Green Lantern Corps, and to my chagrin, gave it the most scathing review I’ve written to date. Much has changed since then, both in the comic book and the folks working on it. Post Sinestro Corps, lets see what happens when we give the book another chance.

Overall Rating: 5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: Mongul acquires a Sinestro Corps ring, and learns all he can from it, and then uses it to leave the planet the dead planet he was on. Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner decide to leave Earth and move to OA permanently. Guy will set up a new Warrior’s Bar on Oa he will call Guy’s Place and Kyle will be his partner. The Guardians track Sinestro Rings.
CommentsThe Good: The art, while a little uneven due to the number of contributors, serves the story. The characterization is dead on for all four Green Lanterns shown, and meshes well with John’s story and characterization. I found the moment where Kyle hangs the picture in his new place poignant, and Kyle and Guy’s meeting with Salaak discussing their move quite amusing. The story was also quite accesible considering I haven’t been following the title closely
The Bad: The art is a little uneven and sketchy, but that is a minor complaint. What drags this book down, in this reviewer’s opinion, is the pacing. We spend 22 pages to accomplish what was in the summary. I realize that this is the “breather” after a big story line, but at $2.99 a pop US, I need more. What was shown in the comic could have been done in at least half the pages and still hit the characterizaton bits that needed to be hit, and give us more story.
Overall: Better than before, but still a little ways away from “necessary” to anyone other than a completist. Overall good work, but not enough meat on the bones.
