Top 10

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 1-10 range typically sell in the 11,000-3,000 unit range.

  1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Last Ronin HC (IDW Publishing)
  2. Saga Vol. 10 (Image Comics)
  3. Something is Killing the Children Vol. 1 (Boom! Studios)
  4. Chainsaw Man Vol. 1 (Viz Media)
  5. Nightwing Vol. 2 Get Grayson HC (2021) (DC Comics)
  6. House of Slaughter Vol. 2 (Boom! Studios)
  7. Department of Truth Vol. 4 (Image Comics)
  8. Fantastic Four Full Circle HC (Abrams Comicarts)
  9. Its Lonely At The Centre of The Earth (Image Comics)
  10. Kaiju No 8 Vol. 5 (Viz Media)

Image Comics took first place with three titles in the Top 10. Viz Media and Boom! Studios tied for second place with two titles apiece. This is an impressive showing for Viz Media as manga continues to invade the American comic books fortress of the local comic shop.

To no surprise, Chainsaw Man was the best-selling manga title. It is interesting to see Kaiju No 8 as the second best-selling manga volume. This manga is absolutely set to have a breakout year once the Kaiju No 8 anime debuts.

IDW Publishing, Abrams Comicarts, and DC Comics tied for third place with one title apiece. Of course, the one DC Comics title in the Top 10 was from the Batman franchise.

What is shocking is that Viz Media beat DC Comics in the Top 10. What is even more surprising is that Marvel Comics placed nothing in the Top 10. To see manga come into local comic shops and beat both DC Comics and Marvel Comics should be a wake-up call to both superhero publishers.

Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 3,000 to 2,000 unit range.

  1. Mighty Marvel Masterworks Doctor Strange Vol. 2 Eternity War Romero (Marvel Comics)
  2. Public Domain Vol. 1 (Image Comics)
  3. Grim Vol. 1 (Boom! Studios)
  4. Critical Role Mighty Nein Origins Fjord HC (Dark Horse Comics)
  5. Saga Vol. 1 (Image Comics)
  6. Something Is Killing The Children Vol. 5 (Boom! Studios)
  7. Friday Book 2 (Image Comics)

  12. Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection Vol. 17 Kravens Last Hunt (Marvel Comics)
  13. Sandman Book One (2022) (DC Comics)
  14. Department of Truth Vol. 1 (Image Comics)
  15. Tatsuki Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man 17-21 (Viz Media)

Image Comics took first place with seven titles. Boom! Studios came in second place with five titles.

Viz Media snagged third place with four titles. Yup. Manga delivers another impressive showing in the Top 25. Manga beat both Marvel Comics and DC Comics in the Top 25 in local comic shops. This used to be the safe space for American superhero comics. That is no more.

DC Comics and Marvel Comics tied for fourth place with three titles apiece. What an embarrassing showing for both publishers. Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics continue to struggle to get much interest in their collections from titles over the past five years.

IDW Publishing, Abrams Comicarts, and Dark Horse Comics came in fifth place with one title apiece.

Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 1,900 to 1,000 unit range.

  1. Afro Samurai Vol. 1 (Titan Comics)

  14. EC Archives Weird Fantasy Vol. 1 (Dark Horse Comics)
  15. Ghoul Next Door (Harper Alley)
  16. Many Deaths of Laila Starr (Boom! Studios)
  17. Nightwing Vol. 1 Leaping Into The Light HC (2021) (DC Comics)
  18. Batman Vol. 1 the Court of Owls (New 52) (DC Comics)

  20. Night Eaters Vol. 1 She Eats the Night (Abrams Comicarts)
  21. Rorschach (DC Comics)
  22. Something Is Killing The Children Vol. 4 (Boom! Studios)
  23. Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection Vol. 23 Hero Killers (Marvel Comics)
  24. Flashpoint Beyond (DC Comics)
  25. Monstress Vol. 1 (Image Comics)

Well, look at that. DC Comics finally makes a big surge to take first place. This is a nice showing for the beleaguered publisher. To no surprise, DC Comics’ success is driven by collations of old stories and collections from the Batman franchise.

Image Comics and Boom! Studios tied for second place with nine titles apiece.

Marvel Comics took fourth place with seven titles in the Top 50. This is a terrible showing for Marvel Comics. Much of Marvel’s success comes on the back of Peter Parker which is no surprise.

Viz Media slotted in fifth place with five titles. This is a good showing for the manga publisher. Viz Media will be happy with this type of success in Local Comics Shops which have historically been resistant to manga in favor of American superhero comics.

Dark Horse Comics put four titles in the Top 50. Abrams Comicarts had two titles. IDW Publishing, Titans Comics, Graphix, and Harper Alley had one title apiece.

Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 1,000 to 900 unit range.

  1. Season of The Bruja Vol. 1 (Oni Press)
  2. Spy X Family Vol. 1 (Viz Media)
  3. Ghost In The Shell Fully Compiled Ed. HC (Kodansha Comics)
  4. House of X / Powers of X (Marvel Comics)
  5. Death Note Black Edition Vol. 1 (Viz Media)

  23. New Fantastic Four Hell In A Handbasket (Marvel Comics)
  24. Strange Adventures (DC Comics)
  25. Berserk Deluxe Edition Vol. 2 HC (Dark Horse Comics)

DC Comics scored first place with fifteen titles in the Top 75. This success is still largely from older stories and stories from the Batman franchise.

Viz Media and Marvel Comics tied for second place with twelve titles apiece in the Top 75. Wow. This is amazing. Viz Media has to be psyched and Marvel Comics must be embarrassed. For the manga publisher to grab a second-place tie with Marvel Comics in local comic shops is amazing. The power of manga continues to grow and expand.

Boom! Studios took third place with eleven titles. Image Comics fell to fourth place with nine titles. Dark Horse Comics slotted into fifth place with six titles.

Abrams Comicarts, Titans Comics, Graphix, all had two titles apiece. IDW Publishing, Harper Alley, Oni Press, and Kodansha Comics all had one title apiece.

Top 100

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 76-100 range typically sell in the 900 to 700 unit range.

  1. Chainsaw Man Vol. 7 (Viz Media)
  2. Batman Catwoman HC (DC Comics)
  3. Department of Truth Vol. 2 (Image Comics)
  4. Kingdom Come (DC Comics)

  20. Sandman Vol. 2 (2022) (DC Comics)
  21. Akira Kodansha Ed. Vol. 1 (Kodansha Comics)
  22. Dragon Ball Super Vol. 17 (Viz Media)
  23. Naruto 3-In-1 Edition Vol. 1 (Viz Media)
  24. Norse Mythology Vol. 3 HC (Dark Horse Comics)
  25. Absolution (AWA Publishing)

DC Comics took first place with twenty-four titles in the Top 100. This is a nice finish for DC Comics. Most of DC Comics’ success continues to be from older stories and stories from the Batman franchise.

Viz Media scored second place with eighteen titles. Incredible. The manga publisher easily beat Marvel Comics and took second place in the Top 100 in local comic shops. If ten years ago you had told me this would happen I would have never believed you. How the mighty have fallen.

Marvel Comics came in third place with fifteen titles. This is nothing but a disappointing finish for the number-one superhero comic publisher in America. Manga is presenting a formidable foe for the House of the Mouse.

Boom! Studios and Image Comics tied for fourth place with eleven titles apiece. Dark Horse Comics had seven titles. Graphix had three titles. Abrams Comicarts, Titans Comics, and Kodansha Comics all had two titles apiece.

IDW Publishing, Harper Alley, Oni Press, AWA Publishing, and Pantheon Books all had one title apiece. What an awful month for IDW Publishing. They would be dead without Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

  9. LORE OLYMPUS: VOL. ONE (Del Rey) 3,550 units
  10. SOLO LEVELING, VOL. 4 (Yen Press) 3,239 units

Del Rey and Yen Press tied for first place with four volumes apiece. Oni Press and Dark Horse Comics tied for third place with one title apiece.

Solo Leveling and Lore Olympus had four volumes apiece. These two franchises continue to dominate the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels chart every single month.

What is interesting is how many foreign graphic novels are dominating the Top 20 Author Graphic Novels sales list. Eight volumes in the Top 10 are Eastern webcomics. American offerings continue to get bullied by international stories.

Sales were down massively compared to last month. In December 2022, the volume in the number 1 spot sold 22,044 units. The volume in the number 10 spot sold 7,255 units. The number 10 volume in December 2022 far outsold the volume in the number 1 spot in January 2023.

Year-over-year numbers were down at the number 1 spot but up at the bottom half of the Top 10. In January 2022, the volume in the number 1 spot sold 8,196 units. Sales dropped below 3,000 units by the number 7 spot and the volume in the number 10 spot sold 2,193 units.

  9. SAGA VOL. 10 (Image Comics) 2,407 units
  10. MY GENTLY RAISED BEAST VOL. 1 (Ize Press) 2,341 units

Del Rey and Yen Press tied for first place with five volumes apiece. Oni Press and Dark Horse Comics tied for third place with one title apiece.

Ize Press had three volumes. Ize Press is a new imprint of Yen Press that focuses on South Korean content. This was an impressive showing for this new imprint.

Seven Seas, Z2 Comics, Top Shelf Prod., and Mariner Books all had one volume apiece.

Solo Leveling and Lore Olympus had five volumes apiece as these two franchises comprised half of the Top 20. It will be interesting to see how long these two franchises continue to monopolize the Author Graphic Novels category.

Fourteen volumes in the Top 20 are Eastern webcomics. Only six volumes are American. The Remarried Empress is a South Korean webcomic. Villains are Destined to Die is a South Korean was originally a web novel that has become a manhwa. My Gently Raised Beast is a South Korean webcomic. Killing Stalking is a South Korean webcomic.

It is impressive how much success South Korean manwha and webcomics are having in the Author Graphic Novels category. This shows no signs of slowing down.

Sales in the bottom half of the Top 20 were also down sharply. In December 2022, the volume at the number 11 spot sold 7,182 units. The volume in the number 20 spot sold 4,550 units which was more than the volume in the number 4 spot in January 2023.

Year-over-year numbers for the bottom half of the Top 20 were up slightly. In January 2022, the volume in the number 11 spot sold 2,138 units. Sales dropped below the 2,000 unit mark by the number 14 spot. The volume in the number 20 spot sold 1,289 units.

DC Comics had five volumes. Three of the five volumes were from the Batman franchise. Four of the five volumes were from incredibly old comic books.

Dark Horse Comics and Marvel Comics tied for second place with two volumes apiece. Marvel Comics had no sales success with their current superhero offerings. Instead, one of the Marvel Comics volumes was Darth Vader. The other volume was an old superhero story from the 1980s.

IDW Publishing had one volume. The power of the Turtles continues for another month.

Month-over-month sales were down by a massive margin. In January 2023, the title in the number 1 spot sold 8,042 units. Sales dropped below the 3,000 unit mark by the number 2 spot. The volume in the number 10 spot sold 1,016 units.

  9. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (Penguin Classics) 776 units
  10. BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS (DC Comics) 755 units

DC Comics dominated all publishers by placing nine volumes in the Top 20. As usual, seven of the nine volumes are from the Batman franchise and the Sandman franchise.

Dark Horse and Marvel Comics tied for second place with four volumes apiece. This is another disappointing finish for Marvel Comics. On the other hand, this was a nice showing by Dark Horse Comics owed much of its success to Avatar. Three of Dark Horse Comics’s four volumes came from the Avatar franchise. I am sure Marvel Comics is really psyched that Mama Disney licensed Avatar over to Dark Horse Comics rather than giving that gift to Marvel Comics.

IDW Publishing, Harry Abrams, and Penguin Classics all had one volume apiece.

Month-over-month for the bottom half of the Top 20 was also down. In January 2023, the volume in the number 11 spot sold 1,001 units. Sales dropped below the 1,000 unit mark by the number 12 spot. The volume in the number 20 spot sold 755 units.

  9. CHAINSAW MAN VOL. 4 (Viz Media) 11,901
  10. DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA VOL. 1 (Viz Media) 11,388 units

Viz Media swept the Top 10. Seriously, we need more competition in the manga market. At some point, Kodansha, Kadokawa, and Shogakukan need to begin challenging Shueisha via Viz Media for the North American market.

Chainsaw Man dominated all other franchises by placing a whopping six volumes in the Top 10. Kaiju No. 8, Spy x Family, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Demon Slayer had one volume apiece.

Personally, I prefer seeing more diversity in the number of franchises in the Top 10. Having one franchise dominate all of the others is not necessarily the best thing for the manga market over the long term.

Month-over-month sales were down by a wide margin. In January 2023, the volume in the number 1 spot sold 25,052 units. Sales dropped below the 20,000 unit mark by the number 3 spot. The volume in the number 10 spot sold 11,388 units.

In December 2022, the volume in the number 1 spot sold 53,600 units. The volume in the number 10 spot does 22,357 units.

Year-over-year numbers were also down across the board. In January 2022, the volume in the number 1 spot sold 56,339 units. Sales dropped below the 20,000 unit mark by the number 9 spot. The volume in the number 10 spot sold 16,241 units.

  10. SPY X FAMILY VOL. 3 (Viz Media) 9,714 units

Viz Media easily beat all other publishers by placing 19 volumes in the Top 20. Dark Horse Comics managed to place one volume in the Top 20.

Chainsaw Man crushed all of the other franchises en route to placing eleven volumes in the Top 20. Spy x Family came in second place with three volumes.

Kaiju No. 8, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Berserk, and Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man had one volume apiece.

Month-over-month sales of the bottom half of the Top 20 were also down. In January 2023, the volume at the number 11 spot sold 11,381 units. Sales dropped below the 10,000 unit mark by the number 17 spot. The volume in the number 20 spot sold 9,714 units.

Year-over-year sales of the bottom half of the Top 20 were down as well. In January 2022, the volume at the number 11 spot sold 16,170 units. The volume at the number 20 spot sold 10,356 units.

It is all manga all of the time as manga pulls off a clean sweep of the Top 10. And it isn’t even close. Nothing from the Author category or the Superhero category even comes close.

Once again manga pulls off the perfect game by sweeping the entire Top 20. Flawless victory! It is impressive how dominant manga has become in the North American market.

How far do Marvel Comics and DC Comics have to go in order to compete with manga? The best-selling volume from either Marvel Comics or DC Comics was The Sandman Book One which moved a paltry 2,336 units. That is nowhere even remotely close to the manga volume in the number 20 spot. America’s Big Two have a very long way to go in order to recover their lost ground to manga.
