Poll: Which Big Event Are You Most Excited To Read?

The Revolution’s poll dealt with the question of which big event for 2008 were readers most excited to read. This poll generated 290 votes. The final results were:

1st Place: Final Crisis: 61% (176 votes)

2nd Place: Secret Invasion: 39% (114 votes)

I’m not surprised that DC’s Final Crisis won this poll. However, I am shocked that Final Crisis absolutely crushed Secret Invasion. It wasn’t even close. Evidently, the readers of The Revolution don’t have much faith in Bendis’ upcoming “You’re a Skrull! No, you’re a Skrull!” story.

Despite my extreme disappointment in Countdown to Final Crisis, I went ahead and voted for Final Crisis. Part of my reasoning is that I have more faith in Grant Morrison to pull off a huge event than I do in Brian Bendis. I was summarily unimpressed with Bendis’ last big event in House of M. And the lead-in to Secret Invasion has been less than thrilling. The general theme behind Secret Invasion just sounds a bit cheesy to me.

On the other hand, Final Crisis seems to be a much larger event than Secret Invasion and there is the possibility for this big event to become a classic tale. I may not enjoy everything that Morrison delivers on Final Crisis, but I am confident that Morrison will at least deliver a well constructed story that is a quality read.

Final Crisis versus Secret Invasion is going to be a pivotal battle for the big two in their efforts to be the dominant publisher of 2008. Personally, since I enjoy both Marvel and DC, I really hope that both events turn out to be excellent reads. That way the fans win no matter what.

Thanks for participating in the poll. I always love hearing what the followers of The Revolution have to say.

  1. I have rather mixed attitudes towards these two crossovers.

On art, a clear victory for Jones over Yu, although Yu is apparently actually getting an inker this time (unlike on NA), so that should improve things a lot.

In terms of writers, Bendis is generally weaker on these kinds of stories than on solo street hero/crime fiction, but the “secret invasion” type stuff plays to his strengths as far as superheroes go; Morrison has the scope for cosmic stuff, but, I have to say, while his imagination is incredible, I often just don’t like his storytelling.

While I’d say FC has a stronger creative team, all things considered, I care more about the core pieces of SI than I do about FC; FC is a cosmic thing was heavy emphasis on the Fourth World, and I really don’t care all that much about the Fourth World; with SI, I really want to see what happens with the Illuminati and the Initiative and all that.

  2. I voted Final Crisis based on Morrison and Jones and the fact Yu is on the art for Secret Invasion. I like his stylized work and all, but when it’s a huge event with multiple characters and small twists making people Skrulls, I’d like to be able to know who that indescript blob is when I look at a page.

And you say Bendis’ last big event as if he’s done all kinds of these. House of M was his first event ever. I’d like to think he learned a lot from that and probably has a lot better pacing for this one planned. Still, if it ends up being random Skrull reveals every issue that make no sense in continuity, I’ll probably lose it.

  3. If it is mostly self-contained, and the artist is skilled enough to keep up with Morrison, then Final Crisis should be decent.

BMB is good in his little niche, but has proven with Avengers, Illuminati and House of M, that he cannot rise past it, and must instead lower everything to his level.

Still, if every Wolverine appearance since he went back to his awful Yellow/blue costume, was revealed to be a Skrull instead, I may arbitrarily declare it excellent.

  4. I voted for Final Crisis based on Morrison’s ability to deliver an excellent story no matter what characters are involved. I do not think it matters if you are a New Gods fan or not. How big a fan were you of Animal Man before Morrison got him? How about the Doom Patrol?
