Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From July 2, 2008

The Followers of The Revolution voted for Batman #678 to receive The Che this week. Batman #678 annihilated the competition this week on its way to garnering The Che award for the best comic book of the week. I was thrilled to see my beloved Legion getting such support in the poll for The Che this week. The results for best read of the week were as follows:

Batman #678: 41% (34 votes)
Astonishing X-Men #25: 14% (12 votes)
Legion of Super Heroes #43: 13% (11 votes)
Trinity #5: 9% (8 votes)
Nightwing #146: 7% (6 votes)
Avengers/Invaders #3: 4% (4 votes)
Squadron Supreme 2 #1: 4% (4 votes)
Amazing Spider-Man #564: 2% (2 votes)

The Followers of The Revolution voted for Amazing Spider-Man #564 to win the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst comic book of the week. It was not even close as Amazing Spider-Man just ran away with this poll. It was interesting to note that Batman #678 came in second place. This emphasizes the fact that Batman RIP is truly a love it or hate it kind of story arc. The results for the worst read of the week are as follows:

Amazing Spider-Man #564: 40% (28 votes)
Batman #678: 18% (13 votes)
Trinity #5: 11% (8 votes)
Avengers/Invaders #3: 10% (7 votes)
Astonishing X-Men #25: 8% (6 votes)
Nightwing #146: 4% (3 votes)
Squadron Supreme 2 #1: 4% (3 votes)
Legion of Super Heroes #43: 1% (1 vote)

All right, let’s go ahead and dish out The Revolution’s weekly awards.

The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Batman #678
Legion of Super Heroes #43

The Winner: Batman #678

I really enjoyed Legion of Super Heroes #43. This was probably Shooter’s best issue so far. I dig how Shooter is handling all of the various Legionnaires. Shooter continues to demonstrate without a doubt that he knows these characters better than anyone else who has written the Legion since Paul Levitz left the title.

Shooter is deftly handling the Legion’s large roster which is something that makes most writers wilt. Shooter is weaving multiple plotlines at the same time and keeps the reader’s attention from start to finish. Legion of Super Heroes is a wonderful blend of action, adventure, mystery, drama and humor.

However, I had to agree with the followers of The Revolution this week and went ahead and gave the Che for best read of the week to Batman #678. Like I said, you either love Batman RIP or you hate it. Put me in the “love it” category. I already praised this issue enough in my review. Suffice it to say, I am excited to see what Morrison has in store for us next.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Amazing Spider-Man #564
Astonishing X-Men #25
Trinity #5

The Winner: Amazing Spider-Man #564

I found Astonishing X- Men #25 to be a dull read and far below what I expect from a writer the caliber of Warren Ellis. But, this issue was not so terrible that I found it to be the worst read of the week.

Trinity #5 was another pedestrian read. But, you can’t give the Sequential Methadone Award to an issue that is simply an average read. Not when you have a truly wretched stinking pile of cow dung in the form of Amazing Spider-Man #564.

Honestly, it was no competition. I had to agree with the followers of The Revolution and award the Sequential Methadone Award of the week to Amazing Spider-Man #564. This issue was an absolutely hideous read. Just when I think that this title cannot get any worse, Marvel does the impossible and proves me wrong. This issue was just awful. Amazing Spider-Man #564 had a thin and shallow story that was then re-told from several different points of view. This was such a boring read.

And the dialogue and character work continues to be laughable. Seriously, there are comic books from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s that have more advanced dialogue and character work than what we are getting on Amazing Spider-Man. Unless you are under the age of twelve, I would not recommend wasting your time and money on Amazing Spider-Man #564.

So congrats to Batman #678 for winning the Che for the week and congrats to Amazing Spider-Man #564 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.

  1. I did love Batman, but I am loving Legion and loving it more with every passing week. The best part is that Shooter is able to give every single Legionnaire something to do in every issue, even if it’s Phantom Girl and Element Lad in varying degrees of nakedness dealing with space fuzz in their dorm rooms.

I’m only disappointed that you haven’t had the time to give us your take on the last two Legion issues. I love hearing what you have to say–probably because I end up acting like a lemming and agreeing with all of it.
