Comic Book Reviews: Absolute Batman #8ABSOLUTE BATMAN #8

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Scott Snyder

Artist: Marcos Martin

Colorist: Muntsa Vicente

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Absolute Batman #8 is incredible storytelling. Scott Snyder and Marcos Martin’s creative chemistry was on point. They make Mr. Freeze a truly terrifying villain that you genuinely feel concerned about how Bruce Wayne can survives what he is put through. That along with the emotional revelations and the ending with what Ark M does all create a strong sense of immersion in the story. The immersion of the story drives home why this is one of the best comic books on the market on a monthly basis. Click here to read the full review.

Comic Book Reviews: Green Lantern Corps #4GREEN LANTERN CORPS #4

CREATIVE TEAM

Writers: Morgan Hampton and Jeremy Adams

Artists: V Ken Marion and Amancay Nahuelpan

Colorist: Arif Prianto

Letterer: Dave Sharpe

Green Lantern Corps #4 is the issue that this series has needed. That is not to say the last three issues weren’t good. But there has been a feeling where this has felt like a solo series, especially compared to its sibling Green Lantern title that is juggling multiple GLC characters in different locations. Here we get a real sense of how the different Green Lantern Corps are spending their time with investigations and protecting the universe. Striking that balance made the chemistry shown between Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Keli Quintela, Simon Baz, Kilowog, and others shine even more. Hopefully this is a sign of Hampton and Adams finding a way to strike the multiplane of action Green Lantern Corps needs to have.

Comic Book Reviews: Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Robert Kirkman

Artist: Ryan Ottley

Colorist: Annalisa Leoni

Letterer: Rus Wooton

It is truly impressive seeing how Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley do not miss a beat with their work on Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1. This comic book hit on the feeling of returning to a universe the reader missed experiencing. Opening the comic book with the impactful way Battle Beast made his debut drove home exactly what kind of experience this would be. And that experience is one to not miss out on for Invincible fans. Comic Book Reviews: One World Under Doom #4ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #4

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Ryan North

Artist: R.B. Silva

Colorist: David Curiel

Letterer: Travis Lanham

One World Under Doom #4 is the culmination of what Ryan North and R.B. Silva have been building towards during the first half of this event. Doctor Doom has won and now it is about showing what that means to have him stand above all. So how is that done? Find a villain that is an even more powerful than Doctor Doom to showcase what things look like with Doom as the protagonist. The best thing that North and Silva continue to do is not try to suddenly alter Doctor Doom to fit what a traditional Marvel protagonist needs to be. This is Doctor Doom to his core and he is using his own experience as a villain to accomplish what he has. The battle with Dormammu showcases this with a cool twist to the way the hook ending is executed.

Comic Book Reviews: Phoenix #11PHOENIX #11

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Stephanie Phillips

Artist: Roi Mercado

Colorist: Java Tartaglia

Letterer: Cory Petit

With each passing issue of this series Stephanie Phillips confidence with writing Jean Grey grows. That’s what makes the way Phoenix #11 kicks off the newest story arc so great. There is a sense of progression to what Jean’s story is. Which is needed to make the most of the big return from someone long forgotten from the Grey Family even. It all emphasizes the Jean is a person first and foremost and that makes her God-level status as Phoenix feels unique. For as strong as the story is Roi Mercado’s artwork is unfortunately a little to rough. There are moments when the art looks good but then we get panels and pages that appear rush. It doesn’t take away from the impact of the story but does effect how the level this comic book reaches.

Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Supergirl #1SUPERGIRL #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Sophie Campbell

Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain

Letterer: Becca Carey

Supergirl #1 is the fresh start that the character has needed. Sophie Campbell does a good job using this debut issue to establish multiple storylines for the long-term future of this series. The focus of the series’ first story arc is one that has potential but also one that hopefully isn’t very long given the other more interesting storylines this issue gets over. If you’re interested in picking up a comic book starring Kara Zor-El this is one to check out. Click here to read the full review.

Comic Book Reviews: Transformers #20TRANSFORMERS #20

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson

Artist: Jorge Corona

Colorist: Mike Spicer

Letterer: Rus Wooton

Megatron waste no time in Transformers #20 reinforcing his power. Right away he makes an impact on the Decepticons future and it sets the tone for what the rest of this issue is. Even when the perspective shifts to Optimus Prime and the Autobots the specter of Megatron hangs over them all. They are barely hanging on as they have been pushed hard and that was all before Megatron presence in this series. And if the final few pages of Transformers #20 are any indication, the Autobots are in an even dire situation when they find out about what’s going on with the Decepticons.

Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10

Comic Book Reviews: Uncanny X-Men #14UNCANNY X-MEN #14

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Gail Simone

Artist: David Marquez

Colorist: Matthew Wilson

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

It is a credit to what Gail Simone has built in this series thus far that the new class of mutants is able to easily lead Uncanny X-Men #14. Jitter, Ransom, Deathdream, and Calico have really come into their own that you care about what happens with their journey that Man-Thing joins them on. Balancing their story with Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, and Wolverine battle back home that connects to the new class. Add in David Marquez artwork that is a great fit for the darker tone this story takes and Uncanny X-Men #14 is yet another winner for this series.
