A solid Wolverine solo story. Most of the story takes place in a bar Wolverine visits. It turns out that the whole town is crooked. As a gang harrasses a drunk, Wolverine stands up for him. It ends up being the police and gang vs. Wolverine. Yes, the odds are in our hero’s favor. Why did he come to this town? What is he after? Did he visit here on purpose? I won’t ruin it for anyone who has not read it.

The author was a crime novelist before he started writing comic books. It shows. Hurwitz knows how to put a story together. He is good at building the suspense.

This is a solid, although typical, Wolverine story. Wolverine is there to help people who can not help themselves. Partly due to the nature of the one-shot, nothing surprising happens.

Opena has great potential. On occasion his people remind me of the characters of Mike Ploog. Other times, his art is similar to John Buscema’s. Either way, this is great art. Occasionally, his art is a little week but it is rare when it happens. I will looking for more comics drawn by Opena. I look forward to seeing his work on Punisher.

If you are looking for a good solid Wolverine story, pick this up. It is a good Christmas surprise.
