Scarlet Witch is ending 2025 and starting 2026 as the new Sorcerer Supreme! This is a development that Marvel has been building towards for a while. Specifically, looking back at it, it’s something Steve Orlando has been building towards with his Scarlet Witch run the last few years. One World Under Doom showed that Wanda Maximoff is the right person to be the new Sorcerer Supreme after Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom. How will Scarlet Witch’s magic elevate one of the most important titles inside the Marvel Universe? Let’s find out with Sorcerer Supreme #1

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SORCERER SUPREME #1
Statement Making Dormammu Intro Fight
Steve Orlando and Bernard Chang waste no time in showing why Scarlet Witch is the new Sorcerer Supreme. Kicking things off having her fighting Dormammu is exactly the statement to make. While Dormammu has been overused as a magical threat he no doubt carries the credibility of a major villain. Seeing how Scarlet Witch is able to defeat Dormammu accomplished a lot. It showed how powerful she is and how differently she uses magic compared to her predecessors, Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom.
Breaking Sorcerer Supreme Title from Doctor Strange
Throughout Sorcerer Supreme #1 we see how Scarlet Witch isn’t looking to follow in her predecessors footsteps. Especially with what Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom did with the title, it would be foolish if she didn’t learn from their mistakes. Seeing those mistakes she is finding ways to make the Sorcerer Supreme title her own. All the while making sure she is making her presence known as the top-tier force in the magic realm. That all helps build a strong foundation for what comes next. What comes next looks to involve Agatha Harkness, who makes an appearance at the end of this issue.

Wanda Maximoff Creates Her Own Council
Wanda Maximoff isn’t just learning from her predecessors but also her own mistakes. It is a great show of self-awareness that one of the first things Wanda does is create a Council for herself. This decision is an example of show rather than tell when it comes to Wanda’s growth as a character. Each person chosen by Wanda for her council was purposeful. They are either tied closely to her or to the magic realm as an authority. Having that balance helps establish the supporting cast of this series in a natural way so when these characters appear in the future it’ll mean more than just being a guest appearances.
Bernard Chang Magic Infused Artwork
Bernard Chang knocks it out of the park in creating a beautiful comic book with Sorcerer Supreme #1. Chang’s artwork taps into the unlimited potential that comes with the use of magic. The artwork gets across how differently Scarlet Witch uses magic from other powerful magic users. It is her own style that helps add to the fun that comes from all the visual storytelling that is done by Chang’s artwork.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK IN SORCERER SUPREME #1
Wanda Maximoff Diary Narration Not Needed
The one thing that keeps this issue from being a 10 out of 10 is the journal entry-style narration boxes. Orlando tries to go for something different with the narration boxes. But that really only works to highlight how unnecessary they were. Because Orlando’s dialogue writing is so strong and Chang’s artwork is so amazing that the story didn’t need narration boxes. It was certainly a case of less is more that would’ve made the pacing perfectly smooth throughout.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Sorcerer Supreme #1 ends 2025 making a strong statement that it will be a comic book not to miss out on in 2026. Steve Orlando and Bernard Chang do an amazing job at showcasing why no one other than Wanda Maximoff should be the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe. From the start with the opening fight against Dormammu to everything Wanda does to establish a strong foundation for her new role is all well done. If this wasn’t already on your pull list make sure you do yourself a favor and pick up this comic book as soon as you can.
