CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Scott Snyder; Artist: Marcos Martin; Colorist: Muntsa Vicente; Letterer: Clayton Cowles

The world building in Absolute Batman has been impeccable. Absolute Batman #7 continues that trend with Scott Snyder using Matches Malone and Mister Freeze’s origin to further expand on this corner of the Absolute Universe. This issue really emphasizes how Absolute Batman really is a Bruce Wayne series. Bruce is the star with his work as Batman being an extension of that. It may not sound that different from any other Batman book but the distinction Snyder makes is clear when reading it. Adding in the excellent artwork by Marcos Martin further adds to this emphasis on what is going on in Gotham City. There are visuals that elevate the importance of scenes that leave you feeling just like the characters experiencing what is going on in the story.

ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #7

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Kelly Thompson; Artist: Mattia De Iulis; Letterer: Becca Carey

Absolute Wonder Woman #7 is a payoff to all the development time this series has given to Circe and Diana’s mother-daughter relationship. The emotional connection that Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis draw from makes all the action that much more intense. The back-and-forth between flashback and present-day scenes are all timed very well. The dialogue has a consistent flow that maintains the greater narrative as Wonder Woman fights for her and Circe’s freedom from Hades. The artwork by Iulis carries so much. Particularly the choice of color palette. The distinction made between Circe and Diana’s home with the battle that goes on in the Underworld makes the visuals go to another level.

G.I. JOE #6

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Joshua Williamson; Artist: Tom Reilly; Colorist: Jordie Bellaire; Letterer: Rus Wooton

G.I. JOE #6 solidified the series as must-read, further strengthening the already strong Energon Universe. And Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire had a lot to live up to with this issue featuring the first showdown between Duke and Cobra Commander. They were able to set the biggest stage possible to immediately set-up these two as rivals. The way their fight was choreographed showed both how differently they approach fighting and they serve opposite ends of the spectrum. By the end Williamson, Reilly, and Bellaire make the JOEs survival of this battle against Cobra feel like a win. Though the time to recover won’t be long as the final few pages tease an even bigger storyline for its second story arc.

GREEN LANTERN #22

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jeremy Adams; Artist: Xermanico; Colorist: Romulo Fajardo Jr.; Letterer: Dave Sharpe

Green Lantern #22 is a comic book that simply leaves you amazed with how much Jeremy Adams and Xermanico pack into it. This series is the definition of how to handle a cosmic comic book. Adams and Xermanico fully utilizes the DC Universe as a playground to tell stories at what felt like every corner. Dedicated an equal amount of time to each story makes Hal Jordan, Carol Ferris, Kyle Rayner, Conner Kent, and Odyssey the Time Bandit all equally important characters. Being able to manage such a big cast further emphasizes the major impact the Fractured Spectrum direction is having on this series.

NIGHTWING #125

Best Comic Books: Nightwing #125

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Dan Watters; Artist: Francesco Francavilla; Letterer: Wes Abbott

Francesco Francavilla was in his bag with the artwork he delivered in Nightwing #125. The detective noir vibes in this story helps elevate how we see Nightwing and Maggie Sawyer’s alliance tested. There are so many great visual design choices made that elevate the investigation both characters work on together. Dan Watters meets the moment of having Francavilla on art by making sure the writing matches the tone set by the artwork. The developments further the way we continue to see Bludhaven evolving as a city after everything that happened with Blockbuster and Heartless. And most importantly how Nightwing and Commissioner Maggie Sawyer are taking on these challenges further build what Bludhaven is becoming.

PHOENIX #10

Best Comic Books: Phoenix #10

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Stephanie Phillips; Artist: Alessandro Miracolo; Colorist: David Curiel; Letterer: Cory Petit

Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo were at the top of their game delivering an epic finale in the Nexus of All Realities. The structure of the finale properly wrapped up a story that’s been developed since the first issue of this series and builds the foundation for what comes next. All that is done while further spotlighting how no matter Jean Grey’s God-level powers as the Phoenix her humanity is never to be forgotten. The level of control Jean continues to show further defines how she has grown as a person. Because of that the final page that transitions us to the next story arc is even more impactful. What this ending for Phoenix #10 means for Jean’s life has a lot of potential for even greater storytelling.

STORM #7

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Murewa Ayodele; Artist: Luciano Vecchio; Colorist: Alex Guimaraes and Fer Sifuentes-Sujo; Letterer: Travis Lanham

If you wanted a clear example of why Ororo Munroe has more than earned her Goddess title look no further than Storm #7. Throughout this issue Murewa Ayodele and Luciano Vecchio push the limits of Storm’s Omega-level mutant powers by having her face off against God-level threats Thor normally takes on. This test turns out to not just be about how powerful Storm is but how she uses her expert fighting skills to reach that next level. The platform Ayodele offers gave Vecchio along with colorists Alex Guimaraes and Fer Sifuentes-Sujo a chance to showcase their abilities as an art team. Their artwork meets the moment of this being a showcase of where Storm is at in the hierarchy of powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #8

Best Comic Books: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jason Aaron; Artist: Juan Ferreyra; Letterer: Shawn Lee

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 is an excellent example of how to tell a standalone story that is built on what came before. There is an approachability to how Jason Aaron structures the story that you feel the weight of what’s going on even if you haven’t read or remember everything. Things are kept simple with how Leonardo and Donatello are focused on. Aaron makes sure the emphasis is on where each of them are at right now. This allowed for a greater analysis of their current direction. Most importantly it is not just what their direction is in the TMNT’s current status quo but individually in Leonardo and Donatello’s life. That all lead to a one-on-one fight that was more than just two brothers disagreeing. Juan Ferreyra really nailed that with the artwork with the way the setting is laid out playing a key role in how intense the fight was. The end result leads to even greater excitement for what comes next in this series.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #16

Best Comic Books: Ultimate Spider-Man #16

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Jonathan Hickman; Artist: Marco Checchetto; Colorist: Matthew Wilson; Letterer: Cory Petit

We are close to two years into this new Ultimate Universe and Ultimate Spider-Man #16 made a strong case for being the best single comic book we’ve gotten from the publishing line thus far. Not enough can be said to how Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto went about exploring Ultimate Gwen Stacy’s backstory. Her origin being tied to Ultimate Mysterio adds a whole new layer to not just this series but the entire Ultimate Universe. The way the story is told reframes every appearance Gwen has made in Ultimate Spider-Man thus far. Not only does this elevate Gwen Stacy’s importance but Ultimate Spider-Man as a series importance to the future of the Ultimate Universe. The revelations that are made create greater intrigue in how The Maker’s return will be handled the closer we get to that moment.

ZATANNA #3

Best Comic Books: Zatanna #3
Credit: DC Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer and Artist: Jamal Campbell; Letterer: Ariana Maher

The pure imagination that Jamal Campbell injects into Zatanna #3 is absolutely stunning. Reading a comic book like Zatanna #3 is a reminder of the unlimited potential this medium has for storytelling. As the writer and artist, Campbell understands which aspect of the comic should be the emphasis. When the moment calls for it the dialogue is given the weight it needs to have. Then when the magic side of things go out of control we get stunning artwork. It all comes together to deliver a story that feels like a wild rollercoaster ride that you are living in the moment through the entire experience. That creates a sense of immersion unlike any other comic book that all highlights how special this series has been thus far.
