Ultimate Wolverine #10 Review

Ultimate Wolverine has done a lot to add to what is going on in the Ultimate Universe. The Winter Soldier story arc that started this series did a lot to build out this series corner of the Ultimate Universe. It helped not only establish Logan’s character but The Opposition, the mutant organization that has a lot of X-Men elements at its core. Now with Logan back on The Opposition’s side how will The Maker’s Council react? Let’s find out with Ultimate Wolverine #10

“WOLVERINE VS. OMEGA RED! The Eurasian Republic leaders have learned that their prize weapon has joined the Opposition! And Wolverine busts out a secret weapon when Omega Red comes to reclaim him…” – Marvel Comics

HIGHLIGHTS OF ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #10

Wolverine & Sabretooth’s Brotherhood

Ultimate Sabretooth has arguably made the biggest impact on this series thus far. The proof of that is with the interaction Logan and Sabretooth share in Ultimate Wolverine #10. There is a depth of understanding between the two characters. They interact as true brothers with Sabretooth taking on the big brother role. That is shown that before leaving with Artie and Leech, Sabretooth makes sure to pass on the Murasama Blade to Logan. The way Logan accepted the gift and Sabretooth’s decision to leave in order to focus on raising Artie and Leech spoke volumes to their relationship.

Rasputin Family are Genuine Threats

A counter to Sabretooth and Wolverine’s relationship is that of the Rasputin Family. While they have strong control over the Eurasian Republic they’ve done so through power. We see this again with Colossus attitude towards everyone around him. He does not put up with any sign of weakness. His response to Omega Red’s fate exemplifies this. Which drives home why the Rasputin Family where chosen by The Maker to be part of his inner circle.

Omega Red vs The Opposition

Things are never quiet for The Opposition as a countdown seems to always be on for when The Maker’s Council finds them. Ultimate Wolverine #10 shows this again as when Sabretooth is about to leave with the kids Omega Red attacks The Oppositions base in Chernobyl. Omega Red’s attack is sudden and effective. It makes how Wolverine leads the response even better. There was no time to mess around as The Opposition couldn’t let Omega Red and the Sentinels a chance to fully surround them. This made Wolverine sending Colossus’ Omega Red’s head as a present an effective message.

Muramasa Blade is the Ultimate Weapon

The Muramasa Blade that Sabretooth gifts to Wolverine is given a lot of time to shine. The way Sabretooth spoke about the Muramasa Blade highlighted how powerful it is. That power turns out to be true with how Wolverine used the sword to kill Omega Red. With Ultimate Endgame around the corner we could see the Muramasa Blade play a big role if Wolverine is a main character in the event. It could be the game changer in Wolverine’s hands that the heroes need against the forces The Maker has and will assemble.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK IN ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #10

Artwork Gets the Job Done

Alex Lins gets the job done but isn’t the series at its best. Lins artwork works when there is a lot of action. But the majority of this issue is a lot of talking heads. This isn’t Lins strength, especially up close shots of characters.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Ultimate Wolverine #10 once again drives home the urgency in The Oppositions ongoing war against The Maker’s Council. They don’t have time to rest and figure out their next move. That urgency mixed in with the incredible portrayal of Wolverine and Sabretooth’s relation made this another great issue in one of Marvel’s best current series.
