As the Super Sentai’s popularity grew overseas thanks to the Power Rangers’ Saban quickly followed up by creating VR Troopers. After being dormant for close to thirty years the VR Troopers have made a resurgence as they are part of BOOM! Studios Power Rangers Prime series. Looking to follow up on that momentum BOOM! Studios will be releasing a VR Troopers six-issue mini-series starting June 25th by writer Mairghread Scott and artist Sebastián Piriz. Ahead of its June release BOOM! Studios has provided us with a first look at the Power Rangers Prime spinoff to share.
For those that aren’t aware, after the success of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1993 Saban was quick to try to continue that momentum. They did that by tapping into another tokusatsu superhero series in the form of Metal Hero Series. The original pilot for Saban’s take on the Metal Hero Series’s Metalder season was known as Cybertron. They even had some Power Rangers ties as Saban casted Jason David Frank as the lead following Tommy Oliver losing his Green Ranger powers and exiting the show.
While filming the pilot Saban decided to change their adaptation of the Metal Hero Series to make it even more like Power Rangers. This change included a new cast as Jason David Frank returned to be part of Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers and retitling the series to be known as VR Troopers. Lasting two seasons, airing 92 episodes from 1994 to 1996, VR Troopers utilized stock footage from the Metalder, Spielban and Shaider’s seasons of the Metal Hero Series. During its TV run VR Troopers had a five-issue comic book published by Marvel in 1995.
Being dormant for close to thirty years the return of VR Troopers is big for fans. BOOM! Studios is making sure they are backing the comic book with covers by artists Taurin Clarke, James Stokoe, Christian Ward, Dan Panosian, Goñi Montes, Jorge Corona, and Sebastián Piriz.
