It’s time for another round of comic book reviews. There were a lot of major releases this week to talk about. With that in mind this week we’ll be covering Absolute Green Arrow #3, Avengers: Armageddon #2, Dark Knights of Steel II #1, G.I. JOE #24, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #11, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2, New Titans #37, and Nightwing #140. ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #3

Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuqurque have found a great balance between flashback and present-day storytelling. Absolute Green Arrow #3 is an example of that as they weave in Oliver Queen’s history with Roy Harper in the Absolute Universe in a seamless way that strengthens the Green Arrow Killer narrative. In the process we see how Absolute Black Canary continues to carry the story to push forward while the Green Arrow Killer increases their activity.

AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #2

Avengers: Armageddon #2 hits the ground running as all the set-up was done by the first issue of the event. That helps make the conflict with Red Hulk to appear as big as possible as the Avengers and their allies launch a full strike attack on the villain’s army. The intensity of the fighting does a lot to drive home how big of a threat Red Hulk and his New America group are. It makes the fact that Red Hulk was seemingly defeated that much more surprising. The villain’s defeat makes the reader pay attention to other sub-plots going on with Iron Man and several other characters. What Chip Zdarsky has planned next is anyone’s guess.

DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL II #1

Dark Knights of Steel II #1 captures that feeling of starting a second season of a show. There is a strong continuation of what happened in the first series as we see the kingdoms all united after their previous conflict. The happy state of things between the House of El, Kingdom of Storms, and Amazonia as they celebrate Diana and Zala-El’s union works to trick you into thinking that is all this first issue will be. When things take a turn with the Aquaman of this universe appearance things quickly go from bad to worse as a major mystery is presented to us. It all works to remind fans of the magic of the first series and show how it will continue in this sequel.

G.I. JOE #24

G.I. JOE #24 is a chapter that has a lot of long-term potential to be one of the more important issues in the series. That is thanks to how certain members of the JOEs and Cobra had to work together to defeat the threat of this short arc. There are a lot of questions created based on how things turned out. The biggest one being what Baroness discovers at the end of this issue. That along with everything else that goes on in this arc will have long-term ramifications for how things go from here.

INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #11

Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #11 continues the intense, bloody fight between Battle Beast and Conquest. Both of them hold nothing back as they are done sizing each other up. The more blood that they spill the more they enjoy the fight they are having. Ryan Ottley is at the top of his game with how he makes the fight look as epic as possible. The changes in the landscape and additions of various monsters helps add to the intensity of their fight. In the end you are left looking forward to this fight continuing in the next issue.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #2

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2 does a much better job at presenting the direction for the reunion of the original team. This is mostly thanks to the idea that the Rita the Rangers are fighting is Bandora the Witch from the Zyuranger Super Sentai series. It is certainly an interesting way for the Rangers to face a familiar but all new threat. That said, there is a lot of adjustments Marguerite Bennett needs to make with the way she writes the Mighty Morphin team. Her writing of these characters continues to feel like someone who is working off cliff notes knowledge of the characters and franchise. Hopefully Bennett can get a better handle of the main cast as there is potential in the narrative she is trying to tell.

NEW TITANS #37

New Titans #37 completes the transition between for the new direction this series is taking. We see how the new, next generation heroes who have joined the Titans are already coming into their own. That includes Stephanie Brown showing she has what it takes to be a leader, following in Dick Grayson and Tim Drake’s footsteps. We also get several major sub-plots being integrated into the series that can grow into major story arcs in the future. This includes the recruitment of Static to the team that gives this series even greater potential to do big things.

NIGHTWING #140

Dan Watters continues to work his magic in making Bludhaven such a character. Bludhaven has never lacked that but there is a certain vibe that Watters, along with artist Denys Cowan, give to the city where you feel it is alive in such a unique way. There is something happening in every corner of the city and the weight of that is difficult for even Nightwing to manage. In the process there is an intriguing Nightwing vs Bludhaven narrative that continues to be built. That all makes Nightwing #134 another strong issue in one of DC Comics best series right now.
