It’s time for another round of comic book reviews. There were a lot of major releases this week to talk about. With that in mind this week we’ll be covering Absolute Superman #23, Batman #13, Daredevil #6, Legion of Super-Heroes #1, and Teen Titans #1. ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #23

Absolute Superman #23 is another reminder of Kal-El’s strength. Specifically, how terrifying Superman’s physical strength can be if he lets go of his control over his power for even a split second. This is emphasized well with how Absolute Toyman puts Superman through severe mental torture that forces Kal-El to lose that control. In that moment we see what makes Absolute Superman such a compelling version of the character. It helps to highlight how his childhood growing up on Krypton puts greater weight on why he reacts the way he does when faced with villains like Toyman and Brainiac that attack him mentally. – Kevin

BATMAN #13

After the Sunset one-shot set-up to establish what the Bad Seeds crossover is about Batman #13 brings us right into the action. That is no surprise as this chapter of Bad Seeds completely focuses on Batman’s response to Vandal Savage activating his plan against Poison Ivy and Gotham City. The action heavy nature was certainly a lot of fun as we get to basically fighting his way through the GCPD headquarters in a way reminiscent of some martial arts movies, with his basic gadgets mixed in. It made for a good second chapter of Bad Seeds, with Matteo Scalera doing a great job with all the choreography. – Kevin

DAREDEVIL #6

Daredevil #6 is an important reminder of how both the writing and artwork play an equally big role in how well a story comes across. Stephanie Phillips does a great job at continuing to explore how Matt Murdock is trying to get a fresh start in his personal life. That is easier said than done when the Daredevil side of his life has so much history, especially as the specter of Wilson Fisk hover over everything Daredevil does. It’s to bad the artwork, while visually distinct, is not the best match for what is supposed to be a more grounded story. There are scenes that are supposed to be taken seriously feel lighthearted because of how characters are drawn and colored. That doesn’t get in the way of the overall impact of this new story arc’s direction, but it doesn’t help either. – Kevin

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1

Legion of Super-Heroes #1 was an excellent debut issue. Fans of the Legion are loyal for a reason, and we have been burned enough times to be wary. But the ingredients here are right: a clear mission, a murder mystery at the center, a United Planets that feels dangerous, and a creative team that understands what makes the heart of the Legion of Super-Heroes franchise beat. TEEN TITANS #1

Teen Titans #1 accomplishes its goal of establishing the rebellious direction this team of Red Hood, Fairplay, Cheshire Cat, Proxy, and Wildcard will go down. While achieving that goal there are many points in this debut that the story stumbles. A lot of that is largely on going with the traditional story arc structure that limits how much can be done to properly highlight a team of largely new characters. Having Daniele Di Nicuolo handling the artwork does a lot to mask the problems faced with this debut. The energetic art style by Nicuolo provides this Teen Titans team with vibe that is its own.
