The month was packed with something for everyone. From big events to cool new ongoings and mini-series, we had a lot of comic books to enjoy. Writer: Joshua Williamson; Artist: Carmen Carnero; Colorist: Nolan Woodard; Letterer: Joe Caramgna

When the first impression of Iron Man #9 is made by the cover stating that this will be one of the most shocking issues from Marvel in 2026 it creates massive expectations. Its expectations that Joshua Williamson and Carmen Carnero showed wasn’t just to sell more copies of Iron Man #9. There is genuine shock as we learn that the person behind mask for the latest iteration of Citizen V is none other than the long thought dead Happy Hogan.

While Happy Hogan has been a major Iron Man character whose gained greater fame thanks to the MCU the character has been considered dead within the Marvel Universe since the original Civil War event in 2006. The character not being around for 20 years made his reveal be a genuine surprise since he was the last character you expect to suddenly appear. Happy Hogan’s reveal adds to how Williamson continues to rebuild the Iron Man franchise as we see with the return of Whiplash and A.I.M. also having a major impact on the direction of this series.

9) ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #24

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Kelly Thompson; Artist: Hayden Sherman; Colorist: Jordie Bellaire; Letterer: Becca Carey

The trust Kelly Thompson has in Hayden Sherman shines through in Absolute Wonder Woman #24. It is a trust that has always been here since the start of the series. That trust is taken to another level as the creative partnership made their understanding of one another’s strengths even better. This is showcased throughout Absolute Wonder Woman #24 as we see how at times the artwork shines and other times the dialogue carries the narrative. It makes how they compliment each other’s work turn this into an even stronger issue.

The creative team chemistry helps to enhance the anticipation for the eventual clash between Wonder Woman and Cheetah. The more time these two spend apart the greater the personal stakes are. Their previous relationship creates tension in how Wonder Woman in particular will react to what has become of her friend’s transformation into Cheetah. In the process we get mythology building with how Greek mythology has adapted into the Absolute Universe.

8) TRANSFORMERS #36

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Robert Kirkman; Artist: Jason Howard; Colorist: Mike Spicer; Letterer: Rus Wooton

Transformers #36 delivers a game-changing shift in tone from the moment it begins. Cobra-La has entered the game, showing exactly what the wider Energon Universe can bring to the series. Their relentless, Aliens-like attack on Thundercracker and Skywarp makes them feel genuinely dangerous. Even though these are characters who tower over almost everything on Earth, Cobra-La hits them with such overwhelming force that they can’t simply swat the threat away.

That danger makes Superion debut be directly tied to the threat Thundercracker and Skywarp found themselves facing. Superion’s debut further sets up the series’ immediate future and strengthens its ties to the larger Energon Universe. The issue also develops Optimus’ rogue Autobots’ alliance with the humans, giving his outlaw Autobot crew a rare sense of stability and a new normal. Of course, that calm only makes Cobra-La’s arrival hit harder. It is a reminder to everyone that just when things seem settled, the Energon Universe always has something bigger waiting.

7) YUMI: 00EX #2

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Doug Wagner; Artist: Hoyt Silva; Colorist: Kevin Lennertz; Letterer: Frank Cvetkovic

Yumi: 00EX #2 doesn’t take its foot off the gas, carrying the debut’s momentum straight into a personal battle for Yumi before expanding the world as she searches for her boyfriend, Richard. Doug Wagner and Hoyt Silva deliver a fun spy thriller, but what really stands out is how much the story feels inspired by Scott Pilgrim, with Yumi battling several of Richard’s larger-than-life exes. That influence never overwhelms the espionage angle. Each opponent leans into classic spy-villain tropes while bringing a distinct fighting style, weapon, and personality to the action.

These encounters make Yumi’s search for Richard more engaging because she’s constantly forced to think on her feet. Silva’s artwork is the real standout, giving the series a personality all its own and making every character memorable. The fight choreography changes with each combatant, while the chibi-style moments add another expressive layer to Yumi’s character. It all comes together as a sharp, energetic, and great-looking comic.

6) G.I. JOE #26

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Joshua Williamson; Artist: Tom Reilly; Colorist: Lee Loughridge; Letterer: Rus Wooton

G.I. Joe #26 delivers a frenetically paced second chapter of the Night Force story arc, wasting no time as the JOEs scramble to keep Baroness safe. Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly make great use of the setup: everyone has chosen a side, leaving little room for talk and forcing the characters to act on the fly. That momentum gives both the G.I. Joe and Night Force squads a chance to shine while keeping readers wondering how the Joes can possibly protect Baroness. All the JOEs can do is rely on is the chemistry they’ve built as a team.

Williamson and Reilly are also careful not to turn Night Force into outright villains. They may be the antagonists here, but they aren’t simply an evil version of the Joes. Night Force are soldiers carrying out a mission assigned to them by their superiors. In many ways, they’re just like the Joes, with one crucial difference: they don’t share the Joes’ personal connection to Baroness as a teammate. That distinction makes the conflict far more compelling, especially as the issue shows how much the Joes have grown together.

5) ABSOLUTE BATMAN #24

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Scott Snyder; Artist: Nick Dragotta; Colorist: Frank Martin; Letterer: Tom Napolitano

To say that the Absolute Universe has pushed Bruce Wayne into a corner would be an understatement. Everything he has experienced as he has learned the truth about how Absolute Joker has manipulated his and others lives have pushed Bruce to a familiar solitary life. That makes the direction Absolute Batman #24 takes even more intriguing.

We see this as the deeper we see Bruce go down the loner path familiar to Batman’s character those around him push the idea that should not be his future. Whether he knows it or not, the life he live with a friend group around him made it so he does have a support system that won’t just abandon him. That support system extends to those Bruce has met since becoming Batman as we see how Alfred Pennyworth and Barbara Gordon become even more important parts of his support system. This world building helps to build anticipation for how important Absolute Batman #25 will be in bringing everything that has been developed in this series together in a big way.

4) EXQUISITE CORPSES: FOX MASK KILLER #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Che Grayson; Artist: Adam Gorham; Colorist: Jordie Bellaire; Letterer: Becca Carey

Exquisite Corpses: Fox Mask Killer #1 took one of the most compelling and visually striking characters from the original series expands on their character to drive home why that was. From the very start of this first issue we see Naomi Yatsurugi be portrayed as a pure badass. You fully buy into how she is someone that when involved in fight she will be the only survivor.

Fox Mask Killer #1 then takes Naomi Yatsurugi to another by showing us the different layers of the character. How badass she is as Fox Mask Killer is just one aspect that makes her a compelling character. She has a backstory from her training to those in her supporting cast that build greater investment in wanting to learn more about her. It all makes it so you instantly want Exquisite Corpses: Fox Mask Killer to become an ongoing series.

3) ABSOLUTE CASSANDRA CAIN: THE SHADOW’S HAND

The 10 Best Comic Books In September 2026: Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow's Hand
Credit: DC Comics

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Che Grayson; Artist: Matias Bergara; Colorist: Mike Spicer; Letterer: Lucas Gattoni

Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand is a showcase of how to maximize every single page that is given to a creative team. Che Grayson and Matias Bergara tell a complete, self-contained story that leaves you satisfied. In the process they are able to create even greater investment in Absolute Cassandra Cain’s future as her origin strengthens the Absolute Universe.

The success of Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand is that it doesn’t try to act as an origin story. You do feel like you are dropped at a key point in Cassandra Cain’s life that sets the foundation for her future. It makes for a better experience as her origin along with Lady Shiva expands on many different things we’ve seen in Absolute Batman and Absolute Catwoman. All of it makes you look forward to Absolute Cassandra Cain and Lady Shiva’s next appearance even more.

2) POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED #3

CREATIVE TEAM

Writers: Kenny Porter and Joey Esposito; Artist: Alenssio Zonno; Colorist: Raul Angulo; Letterer: Ed Dukeshire

In the 30+ year history of the Power Rangers it is tough to argue that no one thing creates an immediate sense of awe and dread like Serpentera. The fact that it only made a handful of appearances added to how powerful Sepentera was as Lord Zedd’s personal Zord. That level of threat is what made the heist the team Trini had to assemble in Power Rangers Unlimited #3 even more exciting. Because you knew if one thing went wrong the Power Rangers would have to deal with a long-term threat with whoever successfully won the auction for Serpentera.

The heist story is further helped by the excellent chemistry between the Power Rangers team created for this issue. Even for the first time they team-up, Trini Kwan, Conner McKnight, Will Aston, Sarah Thompson, and Z instantly balance each other out. They each brought something to the table, both personality, power, and skill-wise that was vital to the mission’s success. That chemistry helped to further add to the sense of urgency as they each needed to pull off their roles in the heist as perfectly as possible. It all further drove home why Power Rangers Unlimited has already become a must read every month.

1) LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1

CREATIVE TEAM

Writer: Joshua Williamson; Artist: Hayden Sherman; Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain; Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

As soon as you open Legion of Super-Heroes #1 you immediately feel the sense of awe and wonder. Joshua Williamson and Hayden Sherman create such a refreshing take on the Legion of Super-Heroes that feels like they are welcoming in readers new and old. That is done simply by showing that there can be unlimited imagination that can be used when designing a comic book. Especially a comic book whose setting is set in a far off future that you can create a world where they can go all out with how futuristic you want it to look.

This sense of imagination also exists for Williamson and Sherman’s take on the Legion of Super-Heroes characters. There is a clear mission that is made with a crazy murder mystery and a United Planets that feel like the most dangerous versions of the group. Keeping the focus tight on Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lass, Brainiac 5, and Matter-Eater Lad helps the story they are involved in shine. There are a variety of sub-plots also introduced that help build out the world. By the end you are just left wanting more Legion of Super-Heroes stories as soon as possible.
