The Invincible Universe continues to go strong in 2025 with not just the current Invincible animated series but also thanks to the current Battle Beast series. Now the Invincible Universe is going to get even stronger with Capes finally being reprinted. Capes reprint happening was announced this past weekend during “Robert Kirkman LIVE at SDCC” panel at San Diego Comic-Con and is scheduled to be released in November.
With Capes, Robert Kirkman will be joined by co-creator and artist for the series Mark Englert to help with the remastering. The series will get fresh artwork and dialogue from Kirkman and Englert. This will certainly excite Invincible fans as Capes has become a rare series that Image Comics and Skybound have not reprinted in a very long time. That excitement is something Kirkman and Englert shared:
Robert Kirkman: “With so much excitement surrounding all things Invincible-related, I knew we had to get Capes back in print….Revisiting the original issues was so much fun, we knew we couldn’t stop there. I love these characters and it was a thrill to get to introduce the world to Bolt, Kid Thor and Knockout in Invincible season 3. If the world wants more Capes how can we not give it to them?”
Mark Englert: “When Robert contacted me out of the blue and asked if I wanted to recolor Capes, I was super excited….I wasn’t expecting going over the old pages to feel so therapeutic, almost mentoring my younger self to bring the art up to par with rest of the amazing books in the Skybound library. When we made the decision to go all in, really remaster the art beyond the colors, adding backgrounds, fixing up faces or figures, my passion for drawing sequential pages was rekindled and I wanted to keep going. Creating brand new Capes stories with Robert and Benito has been a dream come true!”
The reprint for Capes #1 main covers is being handled by Invincible artists Ryan Ottley. There will also be variant covers available from artists Cory Walker, Mark Englert, Cory Walker, Jahnoy Lindsay, black-and-white variant by Ryan Ottley, and a blank sketch cover. SDCC Reveal: Robert Kirkman Announces the Return of Invincible Universe Series Capes!
LOS ANGELES 07/25/2025 — At his “Robert Kirkman LIVE at SDCC” panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC), visionary creator Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead, TRANSFORMERS) announced the return of the long out-of-print and very much in-demand comic book series Capes from Skybound and Image Comics. Representing his and co-creator/artist Mark Englert’s (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hack Slash) corner of the Invincible Universe, Capes will return to comic book shops beginning in November 2025 as a special remastering featuring new art and dialogue from the original creative team.
Reprinted for the first time since its release over 20 years ago, fans and collectors will not want to miss the new monthly releases of Capes. This series is perfect for fans looking to discover every corner of the Invincible Universe as seen in the hit Skybound and Prime Video series, which continues to shatter records worldwide.
Then, in a thrilling second announcement, Kirkman revealed that all-new Capes stories will be coming from another longtime friend of the Invincible Universe, writer Benito Cereno (Invincible Presents: Atom Eve, Blood & Thunder), alongside artist Mark Englert. Beginning in 2026 with issue #7, this revival of Capes promises to take fans even deeper into unexplored areas of the Invincible Universe.
