TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES X GODZILLA #1 SOLICITATION
“The Heroes in a Half-Shell are taking on the King of the Monsters!
Long before the organization was corrupted by Shredder, the Foot Clan’s original purpose was to save Japan from kaiju! Now, in the present day, Godzilla and its fellow monsters have reappeared. Not only is the Foot not prepared to stop them… it would seem Shredder himself is behind the attacks! The villainous ninja is attempting to use the kaiju to create a new mutagen — one that would give his henchman a massive upgrade.
Can the Turtles make it to Japan in time to stop this madness?! Join superstar writer Tim Seeley (Godzilla, Grayson, Revival) and incredible artist Fero Pe (Nightwatcher, TMNT x Stranger Things) in the biggest crossover of the year!” – IDW Publishing
HIGHLIGHTS OF TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES X GODZILLA #1
Mixing Best of Both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Godzilla’s Worlds
Like many similar crossovers both franchises have been involved in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla exists in its own universe. It is a universe that Tim Seeley and Fero Pe obviously did their research on to create. The universe they end up creating is one that is inspired by many different versions from the ones that have existed for both franchises. For fans of 1980s TMNT cartoon there are many elements from that series. There are also a mix of how the kaiju history has been treated as part of the world we’ve seen in various media. It makes for added fun of seeing the callbacks Seeley and Pe make to various version of TMNT and Godzilla.
Respect for History of the Kaiju
Speaking on kaiju history, the presence of Godzilla invokes a respect for what he represents. This is thanks to Splinter’s whose knowledge includes an understanding of what kaiju represent to the world. It is a cool way to build out the mythology of this particular universe with how the kaiju have been part of its history. It drives home the force of nature Godzilla and other kaiju have been in all forms of media.

Mix of Old & New School Shredder’s
Obviously there can’t been a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover without Shredder. And Seeley and Pe definitely lean into the version of Shredder that they love. It is a choice that really works for having this crossover with Godzilla. Seeley will be able to use this version of Shredder as a replacement for other such human antagonists we’ve seen in the past.
Fero Pe Nails Mix of Both Franchises Styles
Fero Pe’s artwork is one of the stars of the show for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla #1. Pe does a great job at mixing so many different styles from both franchises to create a cohesive visual design for this series. It makes the homages paid from costumes, character designs, and items used to be even cooler to see. It gets you more excited for what other callbacks from both franchises we will see in future issues.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK IN TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES X GODZILLA #1
Telegraphed Hook Ending
The hook ending for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla #1 is very predictable. It is something we’ve seen done with a lot of these crossovers that it is more boring than exciting. Luckily, there is so much to fun and cool things in this first issue that it does not interfere with the overall enjoyment of this comic book.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla #1 delivers exactly what fans of both franchises want from a fun comic book. Even with all the crossovers both have been involved in recently Tim Seeley and Fero Pe find a way to make this unique. The way different versions of Godzilla and TMNT elements make for a unique look and feel to how the mythology of this universe is presented. If you’re a fan of either of these franchises make sure to pick up this series.
