Weekly Awards For The Comic Books From July 30, 2008

All right, before we get to the matter at hand concerning the weekly awards, I wanted to give a little love to Kirk Warren over at The Weekly Crisis. Kirk is celebrating his one year anniversary and he deserves much praise and congratulations. Kirk runs a fantastic blog. It certainly is much better run than my blog that I feebly try and cobble together on a daily basis.

And to top it all off, to celebrate his one year anniversary, Kirk will be giving away over $100 worth of trade paperbacks. That is a very cool way to thank his loyal readers. You can check all the details about the anniversary and the giveaways right here.

Now, don’t any of the Followers of The Revolution get any crazy ideas. All I have to give to you people is my undying love. Aww, aren’t you guys the luckiest?

All right, the Followers of The Revolution voted for Wolverine #67 to receive The Che for the best comic book of the week. It was really only a three way race and Wolverine #67, JSA Annual #1 and Green Lantern #33 broke away from the rest of the pack in this poll. The results for best read of the week were as follows:

Wolverine #67: 37% (34 votes)
Justice Society of America Annual #1 26% (24 votes)
Green Lantern #33: 16% (15 votes)
Ultimate Spider-Man #124: 6% (6 votes)
Teen Titans #61: 5% (5 votes)
Superman Batman #50: 3% (3 votes)
Thor #10: 1% (1 vote)
Trinity #9: 1% (1 vote)
Newuniversal 1959: 1% (1 vote)
Project Superpowers #5: 0 votes
Man With No Name #3: 0 votes
Wolverine: Origins #27: 0 votes

The Followers of The Revolution voted for Trinity #9 to receive the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst comic book of the week. It was a close battle as Trinity #9 just did edge out Wolverine: Origins #27 who made a strong showing for second place in this poll.

Interestingly enough, JSA Annual #1 took third and Wolverine #67 took fourth despite their strong showings in the poll for The Che. Clearly, these two issues were “love ‘em or hate ‘em” issues. The results for the worst read of the week are as follows:

Trinity #9: 34% (24 votes)
Wolverine: Origins #27: 27% (19 votes)
Justice Society of America Annual #1: 14% (10 votes)
Wolverine #67: 8% (6 votes)
Thor #10: 4% (3 votes)
Superman Batman #50: 2% (2 votes)
Man With No Name #3: 2% (2 votes)
Green Lantern #33: 1% (1 vote)
Newuniversal 1959: 1% (1 vote)
Teen Titans #61: 1% (1 vote)
Ultimate Spider-Man #124: 1% (1 vote)
Project Superpowers #5: 0 votes

All right, let’s go ahead and dish out The Revolution’s weekly awards.

The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:

Justice Society of America Annual #1
Wolverine #67

The Winner: Wolverine #67

I really enjoyed Justice Society of America Annual #1. It was just fantastic seeing Earth-2 and all of the various great Earth-2 characters back and better than ever. The DC continuity freak in me was immensely pleased with this issue.

However, I had to agree with the Followers of The Revolution and give The Che for the best read of the week to Wolverine #67. The fact is that Wolverine #67 was a fun and exciting read and was much more accessible and new reader friendly than JSA Annual #1.

And now the nominees for the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week:

Trinity #9: 34% (24 votes)
Wolverine: Origins #27: 27% (19 votes)

The Winner: Wolverine: Origins #27

Trinity #9 was not that great of a read. This title has showed some potential at certain points, but for the most part, Busiek has failed to capture my interest on this title.

However, I had break with the Followers of The Revolution and give the Sequential Methadone Award for the worst read of the week to Wolverine: Origins #27. This title has been a consistently hideous read.

It is rather interesting to note the two Wolverine titles won both awards for this week. This shows that even a popular and cool character like Wolverine rises and falls with the talent of the writer handling the story. Millar is giving us a great story and an intriguing take on Wolverine. Way is most certainly not.

So congrats to Wolverine #67 for winning The Che Award of the week and “congrats” to Wolverine: Origins #27 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.
