It’s time for another round of comic book reviews. There were a lot of major releases this week to talk about. With that in mind this week we’ll be covering Absolute Green Arrow #4, Avengers: Armageddon #3, Daredevil #5, Dark Knights of Steel II #2, G.I. JOE #25, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #12, New Titans #38, and Nightwing #141. Find out how these comic books turned out with the latest comic book reviews round-up below.
ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #4

Absolute Green Arrow #4 does its job of setting up big revelations coming sooner rather than later. It is all done as Dinah Lance fights Absolute Solomon Grundy in a tough fight that leads to discovering the brutality surrounding the mystery she is digging into. While this does point back to being connected to Oliver Queen the inclusion of the Longbow Killer in the fight almost feels forced in to remind you they are part of the story. We’ll see how all of this comes together with the next issue.

AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #3

Avengers: Armageddon #3 turns up the heat in making David Colton the big bad of the series by positioning him as Marvel’s version of Superman. That may be simplifying David’s character, but the similarities are something that the story does not shy away from. Mixing that along with elements from the last two Civil War events make it all tough to fully embrace the direction this event is taking. There is an overall feeling that a lot of what the story had going for was handled in the first two issues. Maybe the final two issues will prove this wrong. That is certainly what I hope at this point.

DAREDEVIL #5

Daredevil #5 concludes Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbett’s first arc in a way that still leaves a lot left resolved. The way it all happens makes the unresolved story around Omen help set up the future of this series. It is very much treated like the start of bigger things planned for Matt Murdock to have to deal with. All of that leads to the biggest success of this first arc spotlight how new and refreshing this start is that you want to see what Phillips has planned in the future.

DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL II #2

Dark Knights of Steel II #2 is a comic book that is not about the surprise turns as you see many of them coming because of who is involve. What makes the story work with who has poisoned the House of El is how the characters in the universe react. The reaction comes across as a natural develop to the world because of who is involved. So while you see how much of the story is telegraphed it does not take away from the impact, especially when things break down with loud action sequences. The only thing that does not full work is Otto Schmidt’s art style not fitting the tone of the story. It is a bit to cartoony for the tone of the setting. It does not get in the way of the story as the pacing keeps you wanting to see what happens next in the narrative.

G.I. JOE #25

G.I. JOE #25 is a phenomenal start to the Nightforce story arc. Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly and Andrea Milana pace things out that you feel like you are experiencing the start of a big blockbuster event. Everything that happens in this issue comes across as being a payoff for many sub-plots that have been developed since the start of the series. Where the payoff leads to is anyone’s guess, leaving you as the reader even more excited to find out what happens next. Click here to read the full review.

INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #12

If you thought the previous chapters of the Battle Beast vs Conquest was brutal they all do not hold a candle to what we see in Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #12. To say that the continued fight between the two is brutal would be an understatement. What we get here is truly a fight of two incredibly powerful beings who hold nothing back against one another. It is honestly refreshing to see characters of the level of Battle Beast and Conquest getting the chance to fight without limiters. This is the type of choreography that only works because of the characters involved are two that you buy as fighting to the bitter end in the way they do. The history established with these characters helps to elevate this to another level.

NEW TITANS #38

New Titans #38 is a big transition chapter as Static gets recruited to the team and an Amazon focused story arc centered around Yara Flor is set-up. Having this type of issue does allow Tate Brombal to further explore the spot where each of the members of the New Titans are at. Brombal does a good job at utilizing Static’s newly established history with how Jon Kent poorly handles trying to include him onto the team. The more interesting sub-plot explored in this issue is Stephanie Brown being trained to be the leader of the team by Nightwing. Their dynamic is already showing a lot of potential and what it can mean for the greater team. Then there is the set-up for Yara Flor’s Amazon background to be explored that is handled well enough to transition us into the next story arc for the series.

NIGHTWING #141

Nightwing #141 is structured to feel like it is the end of the first act of Dan Watters narrative for his creative run on the series. He does so by emphasizing the impact the current situation in Bludhaven has greater meaning than just the city against Nightwing. Dick Grayson is faced with having to letting things just play out because if he did decide to act it would have changed more than just his status quo. That leads to develop that further push his and Bludhaven’s narrative forward that keeps the bigger lore mystery of the city.
