Comic Book Review: Nightwing #121

The Revolution has been less and less impressed with this One Year Later storyline in Nightwing. This title seems to be floundering and is going nowhere. Can Jones finally get this Nightwing back on track? I have my doubts. I have just poured my second mug of Café Bustelo and I’m ready to hit this review.

Synopsis: The issue starts with Jason Todd floating in a black void. He is afraid and confused. Dick Grayson appears and tells Jason that he isn’t actually here. That Jason is just thinking about him because he thinks that Dick could rescue him. Jason starts acting like a whiney bitch saying that he is scared and that he doesn’t like this at all. (Oh man, Jones has absolutely no clue how to write Jason Todd at all.) We then shift to the monster that swallowed Jason Todd. The monster transforms back into a little old man and meets with the Pierce brothers. The old man then barfs up Jason Todd who is encased in a clear viscous sack. The sack will harden to the consistency of industrial epoxy and Jason’s embryonic oxygen will expire in 24 hours. The Pierce brothers put Jason on display in a “trophy” room full of other people in their hardened sacks. The Pierce brothers hope this will draw Nightwing out into the open in an attempt to save Jason Todd.

We then cut to Dick and Cheyenne back at Dick’s apartment. Cheyenne is using her powers to massage Dick’s legs. (Yeah, I’m sure that is not the only thing she has massaged with her powers.) Dick tells Cheyenne that she can do so much more with her life rather than being a fashion designer. That with her powers she could fight for good. Cheyenne says that her parents were metahumans that had to go into hiding because of their super powers and how no one accepted them. Therefore, Cheyenne is very defensive about being a metahuman. Cheyenne and Dick then end up fighting each other while they argue. (Oh, this is a healthy relationship.) Cheyenne says that she just wants to forget about her past. To get it out of her mind and out of her dreams. Cheyenne then says “I that asking for so >choke< color="#000099">I quoted that because whenever I see a “>chokechoke< color="#ff0000">Overall: Nightwing #121 is basically some nice art with some weak writing. That is definitely not the type of comic book that I like to read. Nor will I ever recommend a comic book just based upon the artwork. For me, a comic book must have strong writing. And that is the only type of comic book that I will recommend that people spend their hard earned money on. I simply cannot recommend that anyone spend their money on Nightwing. There are numerous other titles much more worth your money. DC needs to replace Jones as the writer and try and get Nightwing back on track. Dick Grayson is a major character in the DC Universe. Diversity Dan even claimed that Dick Grayson was going to be thrust in a more central role after Infinite Crisis. Well, I sure have not seen that. I think the first thing DC needs to do is to get a talented writer to handle one of their biggest named characters.
