There are very few things in this world that I love as much as comic books. Video games would be one of those few things. I’m a complete and total video game junkie. I just can resist buying game consoles. It is a disease.

I have the Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3 and the X-Box 360. Now, I prefer the big consoles to small portable game players. I have the Nintendo Wii, the Sony PS3 and the X-Box 360 and enjoy them all for their own reasons. I have never gotten totally hooked on portable game players. I have a Game Boy Advanced SP, but I never really got into it. I also have the first generation Sony PSP. Now, I like the PSP more, but even that I don’t play too often and I would much rather have the newer slimmer and lighter version of the PSP.

What was really been missing from my video game collection is the Nintendo DS Lite. I have been coveting a nice pearl white one to match my iPod for a while. This seemed like a portable game player that I would play often. Well, luckily for me, a client of mine gave me a CompUSA gift card. Now, I never shop at CompUSA because their prices largely suck and the service there is beyond horrendous. But, if it is free, you know I’ll be there. And I was definitely surprised when I found out that my gift card had $300 on it.

So, I picked up the new Rock Guitar Hero III for the PS3. Yeah, a man can’t live on just Salsa, Merengue and Reggeaton. I dig plenty of guitar rock, too. I also picked up a Nintendo DS Lite. And of course, I had to get some games as well. I got to say that I dig the Nintendo DS Lite more than my PSP. I know that the PSP is a more versatile unit since it is a multimedia player as well as a game unit. But, honestly, I prefer my video iPod for video and music to using my PSP as a multimedia player.

Now, the PSP has a much larger selection of games, but the Nintendo DS Lite is cooler because of its dual screens and the touch screen capability. I also find Nintendo’s game selection, while not as large, to be more diverse and creative. So, if you have any favorite Nintendo DS games to recommend then let me know. I’m always looking for new and different games.

All right, let’s talk about this week’s shipment of comic books that we have headed to the Bunker today. It looks like we have a total of 14 titles this week. That is a pretty normal sized week for The Revolution. This week is perfectly balanced between DC and Marvel.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? I always am excited for the newest issue of Booster Gold. Booster Gold #5 should deliver another fun and enjoyable read. What is so amazing about this title is that Johns hasn’t killed anyone or torn their limbs off. For a Johns title, Booster Gold is surprisingly bright and positive. I’m going to have to credit Jeff Katz for brining a lighter feel to this title. Plus, Booster Gold #5 deals with one of my all-time favorite Batman stories: The Killing Joke.

However, the comic book that I am most looking forward to reading has to be Green Lantern #25. This issue delivers the much anticipated conclusion to the Sinestro War story arc. The Sinestro War story arc has been by far and away the best big event in quite some time. This issue simply has to be an incredible read.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? Oh, this is just too easy. It simply has to be Countdown to Final Crisis #20. This title has become a consistently wretched read and I see no reason for that not to continue this week.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? I am certainly excited for Ultimate Iron Man II #1. The writer for this title is Orson Scott Card. Card certainly has an impressive resume since he has won the Hugo Award four times, the Nebula Award two times and the World Fantasy Award once. Card definitely is the type of writer who should be able to handle a Sci-Fi themed title like Iron Man. Also, the artist for this title is Pasqual Ferry and I absolutely adore is artwork.

Yet, the comic book I am most looking forward to reading is X-Factor #26. X-Factor would normally win this spot on its own merits. However, you add the consistently good read that David cranks out each month with the wonderful goodness of the Messiah Complex story arc and you have an issue that I simply can’t wait to read.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? The past two weeks I have been unable to select a Marvel comic book that I wasn’t looking forward to reading. It is unusual for a published to go two straight weeks without putting out a weak title. Well, the House of Ideas certainly makes up for the past two weeks by foisting several underperforming titles on us this week.

New Avengers #37 is always a disappointing read. We can be guaranteed a slow and plodding story that lacks any direction or purpose. We can also expect to get tons of mindless blathering between the characters about topic such as navel lint and the benefits of kicking vaginas. With this completely unimpressive Hood story arc, I expect more of the same with New Avengers #37.

Fraction has managed to take Punisher War Journal and completely pile drive it into the ground. I don’t know how much longer I can tolerate the pedestrian stories that we get with each issue.

However, the issue I am least looking forward to reading has to be Ghost Rider #18. I am a huge Ghost Rider fan and have a full run of every volume of Ghost Rider. And I love the artwork of Saltares and Texiera. But, I just can’t stomach the hack job that Daniel Way gives us with each issue.

I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week.

  1. A DC-heavy week for me, with Booster Gold, Green Lantern, Fables, and Green Arrow/Black Canary (the latter I’m probably done with after this issue, since I’ve seen Ollie’s fate resolved, and Winick seems set to off Connor or Mia), and only X-Factor holding up the Marvel side.

  2. I got a DS for free and wasn’t interested. And then I opened the box and played Lego Star Wars. Holy Crap. Best. Game. Ever.

  3. I take heart, and continue to purchase Ghost Rider, on the simple fact that Daniel Way is on the outs, and a new writer is starting on the title soon. I can’t rememebr who it is at the moment, but simply reading that the change was happening on newsarama made me decide to keep going.

  4. Update: Connor dies, a laser through the back, just like all of Titans East. That seems to be Winick’s favourite way to kill these days. At least it wasn’t Mia.

I also bought Wonder Woman, which was awesome.

  5. Jason Aaron (of Other Side and Scalped fame from Vertigo) is actually the upcoming new writer on Ghost Rider. I have never really been a big Ghost Rider fan, more of a cool visual than a real character hook for me, but Aaron and new artist Roland Boschi certainly have me interested. Here are links with the Newsarama interviews with both creators:

  6. “navel lint” LOL.

Looking forward to quite a few titles this week.
Green Lantern #25 and GL Corps #19 wrapping up the Sinestro Corps storyline. Booster Gold is always fun as you mentioned.
Nightwing has a Robin vs Nightwing throwdown which I don’t like the sound of, but unfortunately still grabs my attention.

X-Factor is always a great read and has the extra Messiah Complex goodness. Nova is always a good read, but never seems to get a mention.
And New Avengers will give me something to rant about. 😉

  7. technically conner hawke isn’t dead yet. he was just shot through the chest with the laser with his fate to be decided in the next issue. hopefully he’s just injured for awhile. I might be in the minority but I actually like the character. It’s just to bad no one knows what to do with him.

  8. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Best. Game. On. The DS. That is not hyperbole speaking. Phoenix Wright beats out New Super Mario Brothers, Metroid Prime Hunters, Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass, etc (and those are all amazing games.)

It’s got a ton of plot, great characters, alot of humour, and is just plain fun. Only problem may be it’s hard to find a copy in stores, so you may have to order online. (The third in the series is available widely, but I seriously recomend you play them in order.)

The concept, play as an attorney, sounds horrible, but is so amazing in execution. There is no other game on any console I would recomend any more than this.

Other unique games you might enjoy: Hotel Dusk- esentially and interactive mystery novel. Jam Sessions- a guitar game, but much more analogous to a guitar as a keyboard is to a piano than it is similar to Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

Oh, and then there’s contra 4, which may be the best game in the contra series, and includes the original in all it’s brutally hard unless Konami Code is used glory.
