We are back with another week of a ton of comic books released this past New Comic Book Day. There were a lot of major releases this week to talk about. With that in mind this week we’ll be covering Batwoman #3, G.I. JOE #22, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #9, New Titans #36, Nightwing #138, Rogue #5, Sorcerer Supreme #6, and X-Men United #3. Find out how these comic books turned out with the latest comic book reviews round-up below.
BATWOMAN #3
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Dani
Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Batwoman #3 slows things down for the series by taking more time in developing the current state of Kate Kane and her father. It is good to have the reader spend more time connecting with both characters. It also allowed the antagonists of the series is building up to continue to have development time to become major threats. That said, it does feel like the overall plot was stalled until the final few pages when we get Renee Montoya. Those closing pages is when it finally felt something happened. It’s a good hook ending that this issue needed.

G.I. JOE #22
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Andrea Milana
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Rus Wooton
G.I. JOE #22 keeps the momentum going by showing both Cobra and the JOEs making major moves. Joshua Williamson continues to balance things at a steady pace with a natural progression to the series narrative. We see this with the JOEs’ latest mission to disrupt Cobra’s Energon plans. While this operation is only one part of a much larger conflict, it still carries weight, especially in the aftermath of Cobra’s recent actions against the Arashikage.

INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #9
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Ryan Ottley
Colorist: Annalisa Leoni
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #9 is largely a set-up issue for the long-awaited clash with Conquest. While it does an effective job building anticipation, it doesn’t hit with the same high impact of previous issues in this series. Because that, this issue feels like more of the same set-up as last month. Even so, the final face-to-face between Battle Beast and Conquest at the end of this issue delivers exactly the spark the story needs, setting up what should be the fight that’ll deliver all on all the hype in the next issue.

NEW TITANS #35
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Tate Brombal
Artists: Sami Basri, Jordi Tarragona, Vicente Cifuentes
Inkers: Jordi Tarragona and Vicente Cifuentes
Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
New Titans #35 delivers a solid conclusion to Tate Brombal’s first story arc on the series, highlighting new team members along with further elevating Cyborg’s character post-DC K.O. It all helped to show there is a lot of potential with this series going forward. That said, with the conclusion of this arc we are left with the lingering question is what the team dynamic will ultimately look like. What the balance will be between the new and original Titans is hopefully answered in the next issue. Click here for full review.

NIGHTWING #138
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Dan Watters
Artist: Denys Cowan
Inker: Norm Rapmund
Colorist: Francesco Segala
Letterer: Wes Abbott
Nightwing #138 does a strong job advancing Dick Grayson’s current arc, particularly with how it addresses the recent events involving Barbara Gordon. The way that and other recent developments are handled makes Dick’s mental state feel even more grounded, as it becomes clear the world is piling guilt and pain onto him from every direction. That context makes Starfire’s appearance even more important. Dan Watters writes their relationship to be that of close confidants. Their team-up adds momentum to the overall story and makes Dick’s final decision even more compelling as we are left wondering what the possible fallout will be.
Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10
ROGUE #5
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Erica Schultz
Artist: Luigi Zagaria
Colorist: Espen Grundetjern
Letterer: Ariana Maher
Rogue #5 is a disappointing finale as it does not live up to the strong build-up of the previous issues. Erica Schultz clearly understands Rogue’s voice and writes her as the multi-layered character she is beyond her mutant powers, but the resolution to the conflict tied to Rogue’s dark past leaves far too much to be desired. Instead of delivering a satisfying conclusion, the story simply ends. It leaves a feeling of being underwhelming with the payoff we get.

SORCERER SUPREME #6
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Steve Orlando
Artists: Bernard Chang and Von Randal
Colorist: Ruth Redmond
Letterer: Joe Sabino
Sorcerer Supreme #6 is another impressive showcase of how expansive Marvel’s magical corner can be. Steve Orlando, Bernard Chang, and Von Randal highlight the limitless potential of magic by moving the story across multiple locations, from Planet Maritarga to Wiccan’s Dreamscape to the Sanctum Sanctorum. Each setting, along with Scarlet Witch’s actions within them, reinforces her power and versatility. In the process, the seeds planted in the first issue continue to grow, creating a compelling narrative around how Scarlet Witch continues to make the Sorcerer Supreme title her own.
Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10
X-MEN UNITED #3
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Eve L. Ewing
Artist: Tiago Palma
Colorist: Brian Reber
Letterer: Joe Sabino
X-Men United #3 further proves that Eve Ewing has a strong understanding of the X-Men. Specifically, when it comes to having a clear grasp of their team dynamic and the emotional weight that comes with being a mutant. However, the issue loses sight of the unique hook that should distinguish this series from the rest of the X-Men line. Instead, the opening arc leans more into a standard superhero team adventure than exploring why Graymatter Lane for the franchise. Future issues would benefit from digging deeper into Emma’s role and the team’s mission of teaching the next generation of mutants. That will help X-Men United stand apart rather than feel like the little sibling to Uncanny X-Men and X-Men.
