REVIEW
From the moment you open Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1 the time flies by at the speed of Sonic. The issue wastes no time getting you into the crossover, immediately throwing readers into the action. That fast-paced approach works in the comic’s favor, capturing the excitement of seeing the Sonic and Godzilla franchises meeting. It quickly delivers the kind of high-energy fun fans would want from a crossover like this.
One of the things that helps this be such a successful debut is Jack Lawrence and Reggie Graham artwork. Going with the art style seen in other Sonic the Hedgehog comic books is a great tone setter. It gets you to fully buy into the world where Sonic and Godzilla characters are meeting. You aren’t worried about world ending Kaiju suddenly appearing in Sonic’s world. Instead, you are just getting into how rapidly everything moves because of the great sense of motion Lawrence and Graham capture.

That allows Nic Marino to have the focus be on what the response would be by the Sonic characters meeting characters from Godzilla’s world. Marino leans in on the lightning speed Sonic runs with to have all the action do the talking. You are constantly moving forward as there was no time to wasted in how characters respond to the situation.
It is just a blast to see how Team Sonic work together to respond to existing in a world alongside world enders. They must rely on their chemistry to make sure not only they survive but also others in the world survive Godzilla’s cast of Kaiju showing up. Even with all the fast-paced action Marino makes sure the personalities of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and even the Kaiju shines through.
Having Eggman involved as the main antagonist adds to the fun. Eggman is such a cartoony villain that you can’t help but cheer for him to ultimately fall on his face hard when his plan fails. His responses to everything he triggers to happen are just so fitting for his character and the story being told.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1 delivers exactly on the fun you want to see from this type of crossover. From Jack Lawrence and Reggie Graham animated artwork to Nic Marino fast-paced story structure, all the characters involved from both franchises shine. It leads to a reading experience that you can’t help but have a smile on your face the entire time you are reading this comic book. If you are a fan of either franchise, make sure to add Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1 on your pull list if it isn’t already there.
