Void Rivals #27 captures the sense of escalation that has gotten to the point of no turning back. Things have broken down in the Sacred Ring to the point characters just need to decide. Those decisions are impacting on some portions of the story being told. It’s that impact that makes The Quintesson War feel bigger
Impact of All-Out War
Throughout Void Rivals #27 Robert Kirkman and Andrei Bressan drive home how epic an all-out war is. Four of the first five pages are dominated by this. It is a strong choice as it gets into the readers’ minds how massive the battle is.
By establishing the scale, it makes every time we get to the main battle taking place on the Sacred Ring you feel how big it is. Even if it’s only a few panels between other things going on the scale, it is always in your mind.
Adding to the impact is all the battle damage we see with those involved on the battlefield. There is nothing clean about what is going on. Combatants are getting damaged left and right. Having the damage visible makes you feel the impact of every strike and blast exchanged on the Sacred Ring.
No Time to Waste
With the statement made by the battle on the Sacred Ring it creates greater urgency for those not on the battlefield. Because you have the battle at the top of your mind you constantly know there is no time to waste. These characters need to be decisive.
It helps create a fast paced the entire time you are reading Void Rivals #27. It is to the point that you do feel you need to read this multiple times to catch everything. That is because you feel rushed as the reader to get through all of the content.
Creating such a pace gets you into the headspace of everyone that shows up. They are all feeling desperate to make the move that will give their side the win.
Artwork Good but Not at Expected Level
Void Rivals is known for having high quality, consistent artwork. That makes it more noticeable when the consistency isn’t there. That is something that Void Rivals #27 suffers from.
That is not to say Andrei Bressan isn’t delivering quality artwork in Void Rivals #27. There are main stunning moments throughout this issue. That goes for big double page spreads to big panels to show the scale of the different players in this story.
Though there are moments when the characters appear to be drawn differently that what they are normally drawn. That does not get in the way of story moments but because we expect more this is something once you see you pick up on each time.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Void Rivals #27 nails the epic scale of an all-out planet-wide war. All the fights that are going on the Sacred Ring create a sense of urgency for all the decisions the cast needs to make. This leaves you feeling the importance of what is going on here and the possible impact it’ll have on the Energon Universe.
