GREEN LANTERN #32
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Jeremy Adams
Artist: Montos
Colorist: Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
It’s disappointing as a fan to know to expect a comic book to pull the rug from under you based on the cover. Green Lantern #32 falls for this trap by teasing a big engagement but doing something to delay that from happening. It created a predictable story around what happens for the majority of this issue between Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris. While that arc goes down a predictable path there is at least a strong hook ending involving what is next for Hal. The mystery around the vagueness about Hal’s future and what that means for Kyle Rayner and others sets up Green Lantern #600 to have big things happen in it.
Overall Rating: 5.5 Night Girls out of 10
IRON MAN #2
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carmen Carnero
Colorist: Nolan Woodard
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Joshua Williamson and Carmen Carnero are nailing the superhero adventure vibe an Iron Man comic book should have. They are doing that right out of the gate as shown with how Iron Man #2 continues the momentum from their debut issue. Starting things out with a Iron Man and Captain America team-up sets the tone for how much is going around Tony Stark, Madame Masque, and A.I.M. The way they approach the globetrotting adventure helps build up the quickly growing scale of the story that is being built. It all shows that this Iron Man series will be a contender for one of Marvel’s best books this year.
Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10
NEW HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE: THE DAKOTA INCIDENT
CREATIVE TEAM
Writers: Joseph P Illidge, Stephanie Williams, Morgan Hampton, and Nikolas Draper-Ivey
Artists: Valentine De Landro, Carlo Pagulayan, Stephen Segovia, Fico Ossio, and Edwin Galmon
Inker: Jason Paz
Colorists: Marissa Louise, John Kalisz, Ulises Arreola, and Andrew Dalhouse
Letterer: Andworld Design
New History of the DC Universe: The Dakota Incident is a masterclass of telling a comic book story in a three act structure. The seamless structure that the story took showed the clear vision all the creators who worked on this comic book had. They were united in telling the past, present, and future of the Milestone. That vision connects the reader to everything Static, Icon, Rocket, and others go through establish the characters as a part of the current DC Universe. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long before we see all these characters in their own or being major part of current comics from DC.
Overall Rating: 9.5 Night Girls out of 10
ROGUE #2
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Erica Schultz
Artist: Luigi Zagaria
Colorist: Espen Grundet Jern
Letterer: Ariana Maher
Rogue #2 has a lot of good things going for the narrative it is building. It tests Rogue’s character in a way that creates a sense of unpredictability around what’s going on. That said, there is something where the story still needs time to really come together. There are some things that aren’t fully connecting. Rogue going up against random mercenaries was an example of that. It was a scene that, while having good action, was just here to have a generic action sequence. As the series gets more time to cook things start connecting more to drive home that this is a big personal story.
Overall Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10
SORCERER SUPREME #3
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Steve Orlando
Artist: Bernard Chang
Colorist: Ruth Redmond
Letterer: Joe Sabino
Steve Orlando and Bernard Chang have found a strong pacing to establish Scarlet Witch as the new Sorcerer Supreme. They are going with a show rather than tell emphasis to put over Wanda Maximoff’s power level. We see that once again in Sorcerer Supreme #3 as Scarlet Witch takes on the Goblin Queen Madelyne Pryor. This not only accomplish the goal of putting over Scarlet Witch but also shows the variety of magic based characters in the Marvel Universe. Dedicating time in Sorcerer Supreme to rebuilding the magic corner makes the foundation of the series stronger. Especially as we see a bigger story being built with what Agatha Harkness is doing in the background.
Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10
VOID RIVALS #27
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Andrei Bressan
Colorist: Patricio Delpech
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Void Rivals #27 nails the epic scale of an all-out planet-wide war. All the fights that are going on the Sacred Ring create a sense of urgency for all the decisions the cast needs to make. This leaves you feeling the importance of what is going on here and the possible impact it’ll have on the Energon Universe. Click here to read the full review.
