Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley knew exactly the magic they had in their hands with the Battle Beast vs Conquest battle. This is a fight that fans have been has a lot of hype around it. That is something that is very clear with the aura around both fighters throughout Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #10.
The opening sets the tone that with all the buildup things won’t end quickly. The tension around the table as they eat dinner helps add a lot of tension around the upcoming fight. You can both feel the tension in the room and the upmost confidence Battle Beast and Conquest have in their victory.
Highlighting this makes the impact of when Battle Beast and Conquest finally throw down even more impactful. Kirkman knows that once it all starts that his writing plays a support role in Ottley’s incredible artwork. While the artwork is consistent throughout this issue, there is a look to how Ottley draws the fighting that feels like everything has reached a new level.
With how Battle Beast and Conquest love to fight this is Ottley at his best. In getting the chance to draw two characters that hold nothing back when fighting there is an extra bit of impact with each fight. Each blow looks like it hurts, which adds to how Battle Beast and Conquest are enjoying themselves.
Making the fight better is how the supporting cast of this series reacts to the fight. The fear of what will happen when the fight starts from the supporting cast adds so much to the tension of the fight. It gets over how the blows Battle Beast and Conquest deliver on each other won’t just hurt them. There is a real threat of the entire planet they are on which will be absolutely destroyed before the fight is even over. The timing by Kirkman for when people react to the fight is on point.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #10 delivers exactly what fans where looking forward to with the showdown with Conquest. Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley maximize the tension around having these two powerful combatants fighting it out. Ottley is especially in his bag with this fight as there is nothing held back when Battle Beast and Conquest start fighting. The power shown keeps you wondering who will win and if the residents of the planet they are fighting on will survive.
