It’s time for another round of comic book reviews. There were a lot of major releases this week to talk about. With that in mind this week we’ll be covering Avengers: Armageddon #5, Dark Knights of Steel II #4, Detective Comics #1114, G.I. Joe #27, Miles Morales: Spider-Man #3, New Titans #40, Nightwing #143, and Yumi: 00EX #3. Find out how these comic books turned out with the latest comic book reviews round-up below.
AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #5
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Artists: Delio Diaz, Frank Alpizar, and Ario Anindito
Colorist: Jesus Aburtov
Letterer: Cory Petit
Avengers: Armageddon #5 does a lot to establish what the new status quo for the Marvel Universe will be. Chip Zdarsky writing gets over how this status quo shift will be the new normal for a long time. The world turning against all super-humans creates a strong foundation that all the comics that take place in the Marvel Universe can build intriguing storylines around. If it wasn’t for some inconsistencies created by the art-by-committee approach this final issue would have fully solidified this event as one of the best Marvel big events in recent years. DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL II #4
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Tom Taylor
Artist: Otto Schmidt
Colorist: Arif Prianto
Letterer: Wes Abbott
Dark Knights of Steel II #4 continues the trend of each issue finding a way to raise the stakes of this sequel series. There is a feeling that every page and panel is being maximized as there is no delay to dealing with the ramifications of the actions of Amanda Waller. This isn’t just a normal superhero conflict that Amadan Waller is manipulating. Amanda Waller did the one thing in a medieval world that will get an immediate response. She killed the ruler of the country. Of course we would see an immediate response, especially from the half-Kryptonian Bruce Wayne and his crew. That all led to more drama with turns that further build up the intrigue of what the results of the political maneuvering will be when all is said and done.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1114
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Tom Taylor
Artist: Clayton Henry
Colorist: Pedro Estouco
Letterer: Wes Abbott
Detective Comics #1114 is what the Batman: Bad Seeds crossover needed. This comic book carried a sense of urgency about saving the city. Up to this point we’ve mostly seen the Batman Family and others playing defense in just trying to deal with what felt like the new status quo rather than an event that needed to be stopped. Here, we see Batman teaming with Mr. Freeze and Nora Fries being something that helps put over the stakes. It is taking Batman working with one of his rogues gallery members to save Gotham City. While this doesn’t fix all the bigger problems with how the Batman: Bad Seeds crossover has been handled it did help improve the story’s grander picture.

G.I. JOE #27
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Tom Reilly
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Rus Wooton
G.I. Joe #27 does a good job at progressing the “Night Force” story arc at a natural pace. The middle chapter of a story arc is always in a tough spot to get us to transition to the final phase of the story. Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly knew exactly the buttons they needed to make in order to keep the interest in Baroness status quo and G.I. Joe vs Night Force as high as possible. The added layers as each character makes a decision that could prove to be what turns the story to the favor of one side over the other when all is said and done. Click here to read the full review.

MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN #3
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Brian Hill
Artist: Nico Leon
Colorist: Valentine De Landro
Letterer: Bryan Valenza
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #3 is a good world building issue as Brian Hill and Nico Leon establish the early part of their creative run. Revenant’s origin story is well told as we learn why he blames Jeff Morales, Miles’ dad, for what he has become. The story told from Revenant makes you buy his motivation and why it left the mark on Miles by the end of this issue. It leaves us with a lot of questions for what this first story arc will result in when its over.

NEW TITANS #40
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Tate Brombal
Artist: Sami Basri
Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Letterer: Steve Wands
Tate Brombal and Sami Basri’s comfort with this series continues to be the strength of their run. New Titans #43 showcases this comfort as they utilize the conflict the team deals with in the Amazon to give every member a chance to show off. This is the most important thing that the creative team can do as they establish why these characters have come together as a team and the roles they serve. It is especially helpful for the two newest members of the team, Static and Eve, as they come across as genuine parts of the team rather than just guest stars.
Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10
NIGHTWING #143
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Dan Watters
Artist: David Lapham
Colorist: Francesco Segala
Letterer: Wes Abbott
When Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne team-up and are the stars of the show you know it is going to be special. They have a unique chemistry that anytime you see them together you get a Dynamic Duo vibe. That is once again the case with Nightwing #143. Understanding that, Dan Watters and David Lapham use that chemistry to highlight not only the danger present in the Batman: Bad Seeds crossover but also where Nightwing is right now. Nightwing didn’t leave his baggage back in Bludhaven to deal with this crossover in Gotham City. That came with him and made the story have a greater impact with how it furthers multiple narratives for Nightwing and other Batman Family members.
Overall Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10
YUMI: 00EX #3
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Doug Wagner
Artist: Hoyt Silva
Colorist: Kevin Lennertz
Letterer: Frank Cvetkovic
Love makes you do crazy things. That includes forcing a story to rush to set-up the conclusion of the story. That is both the strength and weakness of Yumi: 00EX #3. The energy of the story is still here as we get even more chaotic action as Yumi does everything in her power to save the love of her life. The clashes we have with others that also love her boyfriend help maintain your interest in the story. Though there are several jumps made because of how rushed the overall story is in this penultimate chapter that there you do feel like there were some things cut in order to meet the page count.
Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10
