DC Comics January 2027 comic book solicitations are here! With it we get to see how DC Comics is planning to kick off the new year. Part of these plans that we see are major one shots that take place in both the DC Universe and Absolute Universe. Along with those we got big things happening for Batman, Wonder Woman, Black Lightning, and more. Find out what the ten big takeaways are from DC Comics January 2027 comic book solicitations below.
10) BARBARA GORDON CAN’T ESCAPE FAMILY DRAMA IN PRISON
The solicitation for Barbara Gordon: Breakout #9 teases our hero learning the dark truth of who is behind the Supermax prison she locked up in. What that truth is could already be spoiled by the main cover for Barbara Gordon: Breakout #9. The cover shows us a silhouetted person wearing a hoody, red goggles, and holding a knife. Based on this appearance it is pointing to James Gordon Jr.
Now last time we saw James Gordon Jr. he was turned into a Talon and was defeated by Barbara using the weakness of the Talons. So technically James Gordon Jr. is still dead last we knew. So how could he return? Well thanks to nonother than Vandal Savage. Vandal could have used a Lazarus Pit to bring back James Gordon Jr.
Bringing back James Gordon Jr. would also work with Vandal’s mission to take down the Batman Family and their allies. And what better way to take down both Barbara and Jim Gordon than bringing back James and making him in charge of the Supermax prison. It would make sense for how Barbara has been specifically targeted while locked up and would add more spice to the series.
9) ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN ENTERS THE PHANTOM ZONE
Kal-El has not had an easy time being the sole Kryptonian survivor in the Absolute Universe. It was even harder for him than his main DCU counterpart simply because of the fact that Kal-El actually lived on Krypton for much of his youth. So it is unsurprising that Absolute Kal-El’s life experience on Krypton would cause him to have nightmares about his home planet.
Those nightmares may be even darker than thought as Absolute Superman #27 reveals that the voices Kal-El hears are coming from the Phantom Zone. If the Absolute Phantom Zone is anything like the DCU counterpart, these voices will make life even harder for Kal-El. Not only that but the dangers will go beyond the villains who have formed the Absolute Justice. They may even increase the level of the heroes of the Absolute Universe continue to face.
8) DONNA TROY LEADING NEW FROSTY JUSTICE LEAGUE
2026 was not a great year for Donna Troy. After being taking on the leadership role of the Titans during the period where they took on the role of DCU’s protectors in the Justice League’s place she has disappeared at the start of the DC All In Next Level direction. That happened after she mysteriously left the Titans in the post-DC K.O. world, leaving Nightwing and Cyborg in charge of the New Titans.
Now things will be very different for Donna Troy in 2027 as she will be leading a Justice League strike force in the Arctic Attack Special. Donna leading a team of heroes and villains that utilize ice powers to save Wonder Girl shows where she is seen within the Justice League. She is on that leadership status along with Nightwing at the very least.
This one-shot looks to lead into Donna’s return in New Titans #43. We don’t know if Donna’s return to New Titans will be permanent as she is more acting as a guest mentor for the new team while Nightwing, Cyborg, and Terra are off on a mission with Geo-Force. Donna’s dynamic with the team will be interesting to see as she hasn’t done the mentor thing before. With Yara Flor on the team it could be a big opportunity to explore Donna’s character.
7) BLACK LIGHTNING 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
DC Comics will never pass up the chance to celebrate a major anniversary for any of their characters. To kick off 2027 they will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Black Lighting. For this celebration we will see stories from writers Henny Isabella, Brandon Thomas, Danny Lore, Greg Anderson Elysée, and Al Letson and artists Fico Ossio, Karen S. Darboe, Darryl Banks, and Sedat Özgen.
This celebration should hopefully be the start of something for Black Lightning rather than just a one time thing. Black Lightning is one of those characters that just need a strong creative team to breakthrough beyond being a niche character. It will also be up to the fans to show long term support beyond this anniversary issue to show that potential is real for Black Lightning. If not Black Lightning will be stuck in this realm of just celebratory one-shots and short comic book runs.
6) GAME CHANGING SECRET IN ABSOLUTE BATMAN #26
Absolute Batman #26 will place a greater focus on Absolute Barbara Gordon. Specifically, her hunt to find out the truth behind the murder of her father. It is a truth that she doesn’t know. And even for Absolute Batman, who was there and knows it was Absolute Scarecrow’s doing, is still learning the truth of what is going on in Gotham City.
Based on the solicitation for Absolute Batman #26 the hunt for the truth behind Absolute Jim Gordon’s murder will further pull back the curtains on the secrets hiding in Gotham City. And like we have learned about how Absolute Joker shaped Absolute Bruce Wayne’s history we could see the same thing for Absolute Barbara Gordon.
This would all work to the greater way Absolute Joker plays with so many people’s lives. He hasn’t just targeted Bruce Wayne. We’ve seen how he has had a hand in shaping the history of the Robins, Batman’s rogues, and Gotham City as a whole. The Gordon Family could be part of his greater plans as he saw them be important targets like the Wayne Family and Robins to manipulate in very specific ways.
5) MR. TERRIFIC ASCENDING TO GODHOOD
Mr. Terrific will not be wasting any time in making sure 2027 is his year. Justice League Unlimited #27 solicitation show why that will be as Mr. Terrific sets the stage to ascend to godhood. That is a big step for Mr. Terrific to take.
With how important Justice League Unlimited is to DC All In this direction for Mr. Terrific could be tied to what is going to be going on with Darkseid. Mr. Terrific becoming a God-like character could further tease what big event we will happen at some point in 2027. That will certainly be needed given the plans we already know are in place for the next phase of Darkseid’s long-term plans for the multiverse.
4) ABSOLUTE BLACK CANARY GETS OWN COMIC BOOK
While Absolute Green Arrow has been about who has taken on the role Absolute Oliver Queen left after his death Absolute Dinah Lance has been the star of the series. Dinah has been the one doing the heavy lifting carrying the narrative of Absolute Green Arrow. Dinah is getting rewarded for this with a special Absolute Universe one-shot.
Much like Absolute Cassandra Cain’s one-shot, Absolute Black Canary will focus on Dinah’s Absolute Universe origin story. This origin will focus around about how the things she learns about her deceased mother and her travels leading to a clash with Absolute Wildcat. Unlike their DCU counterpart, Absolute Black Canary and Wildcat will not be on friendly terms. Like many other Absolute Universe versions of DCU heroes, Absolute Wildcat is getting a villainous turn as he is going to be looking to kill Dinah.
Interestingly, Absolute Black Canary is also teased to have even greater ties to the Absolute Evil on-shot. That one-shot has proven to be a very important comic book to shape the current direction of the Absolute Universe. Having ties to that one-shot shows how important Absolute Black Canary will be.
3) BATMAN STARTS HIS BRUCE WAYNE NO MORE ERA
Batman doesn’t get much time to rest after the events of the Bad Seeds crossover event. Right after that event goes down Batman is going to have to deal with assassins targeting Bruce Wayne. These assassins will be successful in “killing” Batman as Bruce Wayne is said to be killed in Batman #15.
Now as we see in the solicitation for January 2027’s Batman #17 the death of Bruce Wayne may not just be a temporary status quo for one story arc. Instead the solicitation teases that this assassination will be an opportunity Bruce will use to make it appear permanent. Not only that but Bruce will be adopting a brand new identity outside of being Batman.
This new mysterious identity will give Bruce the opportunity to infiltrate the secret society of Gotham City that Minotaur, Vandal Savage, and others are involved in. Going with this route to take down the big bad he is facing does leave us to wonder how this will impact Bruce in the long term. This deep cover could end up leading him to go away from being Bruce Wayne, something he has put more of an effort in also being along with his Batman identity in recent years.
2) DC ALL IN REVITALIZES THE NEW GODS
The New Gods are getting another shot during the DC All In Era. This time around Ram V will be joined by Alex Paknadel as the co-writer for The New Gods latest series, with Joan Urgell as the artist. Ram V returning as co-writer also shows that this isn’t a full restart but continuation of a clear plan Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, and DC Editorial have for how The New Gods factor into this current era.
Interestingly, it is very specific that The New Gods series is part of the DC All In Saga rather than part of The Next Level banner most new series since DC K.O. concluded back in March. This does hint that The New Gods is more important to the overall scope of the entire DC All In Era. Especially with even more attention being paid to Darkseid to end 2026 and going into 2027 there are likely connections there that we will see as at least a sub-plot. While it is not hinted at in The New Gods #1 solicitation it being promoted at the DC All In Saga points to that happening.
1) WONDER WOMAN GETS NEW CREATIVE TEAMS 2027
2027 will kick off with a positive start for Wonder Woman. That is thanks to DC Comics wasting no time in trying to undo everything that Tom King’s run did to change the character. Though rather than just writing it away as a dream or like it never happened, DC Comics has tapped writer Louise Simonson and artist Cian Tormey to undo King’s work in a logical way. At least in the most logical way possible as Wonder Woman will do all she can to have the world’s government abolish the Amazon Safety Act.
While DC Comics has done their best to promote Tom King’s Wonder Woman run as a big deal it is clear that it didn’t go as planned for anyone. 2027 seems dedicated to resetting Wonder Woman so she can be in a spot by the end of the year to be a bigger deal. It wouldn’t be surprising that the critical and commercial success of Absolute Wonder Woman opened DC Editorial’s eyes to the fact the DCU Wonder Woman’s direction was not it.
Louise Simonson starting the road to recovery for Wonder Woman is a great call. She has a long history of creating great comic book stories and understanding the role of characters in a larger universe. Simonson’s Wonder Woman story arc will help set-up Stephanie Williams, who will take over after Simonson’s arc, for success later in 2027. Williams has already shown in her guest work during King’s Wonder Woman run she should be the next writer. Hopefully it will all help make 2027 the year of Wonder Woman.
